my cars trip switch was faulty, replaced by fiat dealer under warranty. New clock put on car mileage was 4200 new clock zero miles. All recorded by dealer in service book July 2019.

Fiat dealer was interested in buying my car this week until he saw the service book. He says it is a issue and no one will buy my car.... Read more

I've had my Focus five years and it's time to change. I like it in many ways, but ultimately disappointed with the performance and economy, and also the engine choice of the latest MK4.
It's the 1.5 120 TDCi engined Titanium that I have now.
I believe the Volvo V40 is based on the same platform, and seems to be roughly the same price. I'm looking to buy a one year old car, certainly less than 2.
Will the Volvo share the same platform as the latest Focus MK4?
Is the Volvo a better car? It seems to have a 150 PS Diesel engine amongst others. Is this a proven engine? Anything I should avoid? Read more

Recently I had a slow puncture on my Vauxhall Astra K 1.6 Turbo. The car has no spare wheel, but does come with an emergency container with latex in. This one has two car tyre valves on it. You connect over to the pump and one to the tyre.

I used about a third of the goo. It seems to have stopped the slow.puncture.... Read more

Saw a tyre inflation attachment for a CO2 fire extinguisher in use on the Andrew SPW 4X4 Youtube channel, That ought to be pretty effective for re-inflation.

I suppose a CO2 extinguisher would be fairly expensive, but if you are doing ship-of-the-desert stylee overlanding, where the vehicle is your means of survival, you won't be inclined to skimp, plus I'd guess such vehicles aren't/can't be insured for full replacement cost....

Hi

I'm thinking of changing my Mazda CX-3 to the Micra as my wife finds the Mazda to big to handle. I'm thinking of changing to the Micra Techa 117bhp model and would appreciate any advice/feedback.... Read more

I'm about to buy the B-Max 1.5 Tdci 75PS (2015) with 47000 miles on the clock. I would really like to know the opinions about this particular car. I'm going to use it to drive around with my disabled daughter. We are a family of 3, and for my small cleaning business. Should I go for it or should I opt for some different engine? How reliable the car is? Thanks for all the info in advance. Read more

Parents had one, a 1.4 petrol. Fairly nice car but doors were very heavy, too heavy for them. Performance was adequate but slower than the equivalent fiesta they swapped it for. I wouldn't recommend. They returned to the fiesta and are much happier with it.

I see in Ask HJ there is a detailed reply on the advisability of changing a wheel in the event of a puncture on heavy EVs, specifically the Niro. Recovery is the preferred solution with year two onwards being paid for by the customer.
Presumably it applies to all heavy EVs? Yet another reason I will stay with old tech as long as possible. Read more

Very unusual for an EV to have a spare, so recovery is highly likely anyway in the event of a severe puncture.

Superb iV does not have a factory spare so I retained to one I had bought for the first Superb (both cars have the same size wheels and tyres) and put it in the boot. Fortunately whilst the iV's boot is smaller than a regular Superb's boot (hanks to the batteries and electronics) it is still big compared to most cars and there is about 80 litres of space under the floor intended for storing charging cables, total capacity about 570 litres.

An interesting conundrum.

A friends son works for a utilities company and has use of a pool car which he is the main user and has permission to take home (but no personal use) as he does on call for the company.

The company this week changed the vehicles tracker for a newer model which amongst other things includes a camera inside the car with a microphone recording the driver.

The argument from the company is it lowers their insurance as it will identify if a driver is distracted or ‘acting illegally’ (that’s what it states in the employee email bulletin he showed me). It also helps them ‘monitor and correct including the disciplinary of drivers’.

It was installed Wednesday afternoon.

Thursday morning he handed in the keys and refused to drive the vehicle citing his civil liberties in particular his right to privacy as the company driver document makes mention staff are allowed to use the vehicles information system for personal phones to make and receive calls handsfree and stream music in line with the law around handheld devices.
He also made the valid point, you employed me as an electrical engineer not a driver.

Where does he stand?

Personally I can see both arguments.

I don’t want to be recorded VS your on paid time in our vehicle

Update -

A few drivers joined in protest and by 11am a meeting was hastily arranged where the company apologised for not consulting staff and had the tracker company return at the weekend to turn off the in vehicle cameras and microphones within the pool cars and pick ups.
The company will now look at the value of the in vehicle camera and microphone and committed to consult with staff

Looks like a good compromise for all concerned, he is happy they have come to their senses.

Did this improve/change the engine note John? I would love to do that on my rover v8 as it is sounding so strangled. Might have to go for fast flow cats instead being a 2004 but still interested in how no cats affected your Audi
