Looking for a used petrol car for a 20yr old driver. As she does some motorway driving she would prefer a 1.4 unless someone can suggest a powerful enough 1.2 ( she has been on our insurance as a named driver on 3 different cars even a used golf gti so she's a very good driver )... Read more
Thanks for that great detailed reply.
I will give it a thorough read over a beer in the sunny garden this evening...

Police cars have ANPR cameras. Watch any police documentary and you can hear the pings as they detect untaxed, unlicensed and uninsured vehicles. It seems they only bother about insurance lapses, unless they're bored and run out of doughnuts.

For that koney, you can almost any “regular” car after negotiating. Depending what you’re going for, you could look at brand new, even if list price is in the high £20ks...
But like others said, a petrol engine is what you want here.
Heard from an owner who was avictim of a team operating in Northampton that he was changing the car for another Toyota with a cat converter located in a position where it is difficult to steal easily.
Surprised to learn that this is a selling point !
Heard that the Jazz is another car targeted.

This is a message to anyone with time on their hands - fake stupidity and engage with them. I often amuse myself while doing something else by keeping them on the line for as long as possible, with painstakingly slow speech and random clicking while they think I am downloading their control program. This temporarily saves someone else possibly more vulnerable. When I eventually ask them how it feels to be such a shameful evil human being, they usually hang up immediately but are often amusingly abusive. But my question is, why do they all, without exception, have a south asian accent? Are they yet another phenomenon of the failure of the UK brand of 'multiculturalism'?
If lots of people did this I think they would soon give up. Read more
Re accents, one of the “BT” ones has a recorded message from a very plummy older gent who sounds like a native English speaker. Spoils it a bit by offering to “fix up” the problem.
maybe he is a hostage playing his own game with the spammers. ;-)
If a used car is bought privately, one is supposed to immediately tax it in order to drive it home.
But, thinking about it, if the V5 slip hasn't even been posted at the point of sale/ownership, surely there would be a few days until DVLA have received and processed the change?... Read more
<< That only works legally if the vehicle is parked on private property during the SORN period, or with all 4 wheels on a trailer/transporter - it can't be used if the vehicle is parked on public highway. >>
Yes, but it looks like a valid arrangement, unless a SORNed car can only be retaxed by the same owner. As things are now, DVLA gets double VED for any month when a car changes hands, which I think is a low-key swindle. It didn't happen until recently, as any remaining tax could be 'sold' with the car, and the residue of the current month always remained in effect.
Can anyone tell me a what sort of air compressor I need to get for spray painting occasional small jobs.

Having done some DIY spraying years ago I would say avoid getting into compressors and spray guns if possible. You can do some decent work with good quality aerosols on smallish parts and your choice of paint is made for you in the colour that is usually a decent match for the vehicle. You can even buy two-pack car paint in aerosols nowadays.
Just an example but there are other suppliers:-...
I was interested in a car, but only about 70 available in the country.
Although I have a car, I would have to go by train to if I wanted to pick it up. Even then not so keen on getting on a train due catching you know what and all the various train changes.
The other option is to go by car, but then a tow truck. The car dealer does not offer delivery (so I would have to find a reputable one). ... Read more

3 year old + car - no way
NO! Never sell a car to a friend or relative. It will go wrong eventually and they'll always blame you.
