A friend of mine has had her driving licence revoked by the DVLA because of information received alleging alcohol dependence.
She does have a history of alcohol related issues, but has never been disqualified due to a drink driving offence.
If she attends an independent medical examination at a DVLA approved doctor, can she expect an unbiased report, and if the independent examination is found in her favour, will she be able to override the DVLA decision and have her licence re-instated? Read more
With 2 little kids I am in need of a car with more boot space - currently driving a 57 reg Audi A3 Sport 2.0 with 96k and looking to get something a bit bigger as we are filling the boot up way to easily and have no roof rack. Also 3 doors is a pain.
Unfortunatly I don't have much to spend - 3k + whatever I can get for my car, PX or eBay... PX price seems to be around £2.1k and ebay not much better...
Currently looking at a few
- Mondeo Estate
- Focus Estate
- Insignia Estate
- Freelander 2
- Mitsubishi Outlander
- Nissan X Trail
I'm not hugely fussy but I want the car to suit my eye (which rules out MPVs) having previoulsy had a Rav 4, I like the bigger cabin and the idea of being higher up so the 4x4 ones appeal a little bit more - but it does seem as though these are generally have higher miles or older reg for the same money.
Also even though they seem to have bigger boot spaces - I'm guessing this is mainly vertical space and thus impractical...?... Read more
In the same position years a Volvo petrol estate came to the rescue. It had 160K on the clock and I it for about three years as the family workhorse.
Just booked our 1.5 diesel clio in for a service, the car is on a 4 year service plan with Renault, during the phone call with the service department, I was offered a DPF cleaning service for a extra £20, at the time I said no, but thinking about it later, maybe I should have said yes, even though I can add this to the service. We don't do many miles, maybe 8000 miles a year and do a 40 minute journey once a week, rest of the time is driving 6 miles on a A road from one town to the next.
I am not totally sure what Renault do to clean the DPF but I understand that you can buy additives that can be added to the diesel tank. ... Read more
Add a cleaner your self and take the car for a blast down the motorway. That will have the same affect and cheaper.I have the same engine in my Dacia never had ithe DPF cleaned. I understood they cleaned themselves at a certain speed and temprature.

One last thing, although I don't have any specific information on the streetwise clutch, strictly speaking this is the wrong part of the forum for that question, you may fare better asking on the 'technical' page.
The engine/gearbox/clych in the streetwise are the old rover 2.0 combination, the 100hp version, not the bmw, so if it was me and i could factor in the price of a clutch (potentially) that in my humble and experienced opinion from "my days" is a better engine if it has had the oil changes.. perhaps worth a punt. £795???
Hi,
Sorry for another post but thought the topic was changing in my last one. I want another automatic large family car. Avensis/Accord size. I like the sound of CVT’s. I’ve heard many hate them but I’d like to try one and Honest John reckons the Multidrive S CVT in the Avensis (2009-2015) is a great one. which Accords had a CVT and was it as good as their other auto boxes? A traditional torque converter set up with Little likely to worry. Buy wisely and these do make great cheap big wagons but remember they’re dated now and unlikely to hold onto much of that value.
Hi - time to upscale my wheels, thanks to getting a dog who struggles getting in and out of my old Toyota Yaris! Need to keep it cheap, I have been looking at older (<2007) and high mileage (>100K) estates. Something between £1k - £1.5k.... Focus or Fabia Estate, Peugeot 206 / 207SW are on my radar.
Is it better to go with a petrol, or a turbo diesel? I read lots of threads discussing problems with the latter. Never owned a diesel, the fuel economy appeals but I read a lot of threads discussing expensive issues with the turbo diesels, e.g. the Ford Focus Estate TDCI1.6 problems, concern me. Would it be better to go with the Focus in the 1.6 petrol unit?... Read more
Thanks guys. I'll look out for a mk2 1.6 with a recent cam belt change or try and get a new one fitted by the seller as part of the negotiation. The 1.8 sounds worth a look even if it's slightly less economical.
The fabia 1.4 16v might be worth a look also although there's less space for a greyhound to spread out in there ;)
We are a couple with 5 year old kid. Wanted to buy a nice driving roadster (mx-5/z4) for some time. However, just seen some reviews of M240i and the idea of a nice driving machine which can carry our kid also for some open top motoring looks attractive. Could someone throw feedback about carrying a kid in M240i? If this is our only car how good is this for long drives-especially for the kid at back? Since we cannot put the wind deflector with rear seat occupied how bad it could be for the kid with open top-will it be still enjoyable for him?
I realize the answers would be primarily opinion based. That is fine, just would like some inputs... Read more
Thank you everyone for your input. It looks like I should go for two cars. The fun car budget has to be limited in that case. So will look at roadsters.
So where are they? All I see is a blurred picture of a BMW. Read more
The wheels on My vw golf keeps sticking to the axke. So much so that I had to call out the breakdown company had to be called out when I had a flat recently.
