Anyone else had a letter from their VW dealership - "You have been selected by Volkswagen UK for a manufacturer upgrade on your car"?
VW and UK and European transport ministries have said from the start that the software 'cheat' only kicked in during the USA test and did not affect normal running or the European test.
If the car passes the UK test without the software kicking in, then surely it is legal in the UK and doesn't need the fix....
Having a bit of trouble stripping the caliper ears. The caliper pins moved apparently OK, but the (upper?) bushing is stuck fast.

The corrosion supported the weight of the car easily, including a bit of hammering on a suspension plate above it.
There are a couple of Stuart tanks in a playground in the nearby city (only considered light tanks by mid/late WW2, but probably heavy enough) that I thought I'd try, (no more Mr Nice Guy stylee) but on the way there came across a shipping container in use as a workshop, mounted on steel wheel hubs at the corners to give it some height. That, with my (5?) ton bottle jack and a socket, did it....
Do give yourself extra time for the journey, there are junctions on the M2/A2 that have the potential to become bottlenecks with the extra traffic load.

I am hoping that you might be able to give me some advice choosing a car.
I have never owned my own car before despite having held a license for over 15 years. I am about to take the plunge and enter the used car market for the first time and I'm finding it difficult to know what the right choice (if there is such a thing) is.
I have a budget of around £4000 which I'll be borrowing from a family member and paying off over about 3-4 years. I want to get a car which will last for that amount of time and hopefully longer. I will be buying a car and driving it until it's last breath. I am drawn to toyotas because of their reputation for longevity and reliability. I also want good fuel economy.
I will be driving a 100 mile round trip commute 3 times a week on mostly motorways and A roads but with some inevitable London congestion. Other times I'll be doing a mixture of city driving as well as some longer motorway journeys around the country. I expect to be doing between 15 and 20 thousand miles a year.
Looking at what my money might buy, I could get say a 5 year old Yaris with maybe 50000 miles on it or so, relatively economical, not too aged, but maybe not so great for motorways. Diesel version might be a year or two older for the money.
I could get an 8 year old Prius with around 80000 miles, from what I've read they seem to go on forever and due to the way they are built wear and tear is minimal. Not the ideal motorway car but a bit more comfortable than the Yaris, and still good city mpg.
I could also get an Avensis of similar age, more comfortable for the long miles, but worse mpg, probably too big for my needs.
The Prius is looking like a good compromise. I have to admit being drawn to the techy aspect of driving a hybrid, I like gadgets :). I am a little scared of buying a car that old though, when i could get something more recent for the same money. But the idea of doing all those miles in such a small car is a little depressing.
So, I've gone on far too long, if you have made it this far you deserve a medal, please help me!

I have been charged £585 by Enterprise to repair a scratch no bigger than this "0" and a very slight indentation - on the rear right wheel arch. I havent been given any documents to prove the repair. The money was just debited from my card. Where can i get a second opinion and what are my options? I have photos of the "damage". Any help hugely appreciated. Read more
Hired a van from Europcar in UK recently. On return I admitted to some damage - small dent in driver's door. They used a template device to detect that the damage was small enough to be ignored. No charge. Full marks Europcar for not being as grasping as some of their competitors.

plenty of penetrating oil,
clean all around the edge in case of rust etc, wiith thin screwdriver, small wire brush etc
I would try with a solid metal punch...
It'll seem like nothing happening.... the put some more penetrating oil in, leave overnight, clean , try again....andit will come out...

I have to say on behalf of the majority of the posters on this forum that we would be reluctant to believe your claim unless you have proof.
Is there any problem with giving a prospective purchaser the document reference number. They reckon they need it to check the road tax. I know they dont, but want to keep them happy, unless it's a problem. Read more
You can check tax online with the reg number alone. No need for V5C. However prospective buyer would need to see the V5 in detail if he/she were a serious prospect. Would also want to see evidence of ownership as opposed to keepership - V5C doesn't guarantee ownership.
Opel/Vauxhall don't use Eolys - if the DPF is an issue, it'll set diagnostic codes.
