Just after some of the collective wisdom from back room members.

Our fleet of lorries (dustcarts) are just only a year old but one driver last week had to be recovered from Blackheath hill due to the transmission failing, the gearbox is in question is the Allison 6 speed heavy duty automatic gearbox as found in all sorts of heavy duty applications like earth moving equipment. Gordon Bent might know of the gear box and so might others on here.... Read more

When we had a new fleet of FM12's some years ago we had a total gearbox failure on one of them and the reason was it had no oil in it. I have no idea how a new truck ended up without oil in the gearbox though.

I think most of that fleet had gearbox rebuilds very early on under warranty as the syncro's were faulty.

To all you lovely people out there.

Can someone please explain in 'Idiots Form' the correct driving hours and rest per day for an HGV Driver if the Work Contact states 7am until 4am Mon - Fri and 7.30 until 11.30 Sat.... Read more

There's a difference between duty hours and driving hours - and it depends on the number of seats together with the nature of the journeys/pasengers.

TR7 passed its 32nd MoT this week - flying colours, only advisory low front pads (original discs)

Suppose you will keep using them until its metal to metal to save a few more pence.

When buying a car privately, how much money should I reasonably pay over the trade / part exchange price.

It is easy to get the trade / part ex prices for a car from websites such as autotrader or WBAC.... Read more

Initially it was on for £4200 (AT's assessment of what it was "worth". We reduced it a couple of times, and eventually sold it to the first viewer for £3700. Taking into account the prep costs we're still a good £800 better off than we would have been with WBAC. Car was in decent nick (FSH, good tyres, but the odd scuff and ding on the bodywork).

Last year my daughter decided to swop her 55-plate Golf Plus for a newer Mini. She had eyes on one from her local dealer and got a part-ex offer from them. I suggested a price for AutoTrader, she did the necessary, and got one serious enquiry from over 100 miles away. After the usual horse-trade she ended about £1200 better off. And without waiting many days either.

I need help/advice regarding dashboard rattle on this otherwise superb car. Had it 4 years from new. Now 35K miles. Out of warranty. Full SH. Diesel engine and gearbox extremely strong. Dashboard will rattle/buzz due to engine vibration around 1200 rpm. Not loud but very annoying. I can stop it by pressing on the central vents with my hand. My view is that it is the central vents 'housing' rattling where it inserted into the rest of the facia. Possibly some felt tape or some such might fix it. Advice needed as to what to do. 1. Take to BMW dealer and ask them to have a look and see what they can do? 2. Take to independent BMW specialist to have look? 3. Put up with it as it not a big issue and accept it as just one of those things that will happen in a stiffly sprung 4 year old SUV? Read more

I would try botching it, without taking it apart.
Felt tape/rubber or suchlike.

My golf plus is 6 years old, and I have had from new, and has done about 75000 miles. I moved to London 2 years ago and from the honest john site and reviews use Volks Autos in Sutton for maintenance. I may sell the car soon but was advised thet the cam belt should be replaced and did not wish to sell the car without having that done and one glow plug was not working so decided to have both jobs done and agreed to a verbal figure of about £650. I expected to collect the car last wed but was phoned to say that a glow plug had broken and that it would need boring out and the total would be £1117 or about that. I had a discussion with two mechanics about having the glow plugs done and neither mentioned this as a possibility . The mechanic who phoned me said it was unexpected with my car but can happen, quite frequently. I have not yet got the car back. Is the garage behaving reasonably? Will the glow plugs be a different size now. It was a lot of money to spend initially, and now seems a massive amount. I am a straighforward customer not a mechanic. Thanks

Railroad.

Stainless steel threaded glow plugs in aluminium alloy threaded cylinder head are a recipe for disaster. Make sure you coat the threads of the new glow plugs with high temperature anti-seize paste when you fit them. That way they'll come out much easier next time.

Does anyone know what type of materiels(products) these friendly drive through hand car wash guys use? --there is the squirty stuff that first get's jet sprayed all over the car, followed by jet water of course--then bubbly sponges are applied all round that -at worst-look a bit like washing up liquid Finally if i go for the wax polish--a pink substance in a plastic bottle is liberally annointed then polished off. To finish--a paint brush dresses the tyres with "shine" and if i get the inside cleaned-I notice the guys use some kind of aerosol stuff for the dash which sort of shines--but mainly leaves a lemony smell!... Recently, a bit short of time, I had a car washed at local supermarket. Never again. Windows were shammied resulting in a badly smeared. I have feeling the same shammy went all over the car.

I've always washed it myself. This will continue to be the case.

Hello there to all

I have recently bought a ford focus 1.8 tdci drives brilliantly, however every once in a while the glow plug light or EML comes on and flashes i will note there is NO LOSS OF POWER, i have tried a second hand throttle pedal, however problem persists.

There are no fault codes present and when you switch car on and off it disappears, anyone have any tips or suggestions please?

I will be extremely grateful

Cheers Read more

No need to take it to a Ford dealer, just to a specialist with suitable equipment to make an accurate analysis of what the fault codes relate to.As I have always said,"anyone can read a book, but do they understand the story"
