Looking to change my fuel filter in the near future. I've looked in the Haynes manual and it says to depressurize the fuel system before doing so, but I can't find the valve under the bonnet which it says to do this via. Is this an absolute must when changing the filter or not?

From what I've gathered so far, you undo each of the quick release fittings, take out the fuel filter whilst having a container underneath to catch the spillages, and then fit the new filter in, ensuring it clicks into place on each side. Read more

It is not an absolute must, but it does prevent fuel spraying around when you release the pipes at the filter. An alternative method ,is to open the fuse box cover in the engine bay and identify the 2 purple relays in the fusebox, near the bottom. One of these is the pump relay.Run the engine and pull out each in turn to find out which causes the engine to falter and run out of fuel. There is a special tool to release the pipe fittings off the filter, but it can be done with a couple of small screwdrivers.

During the I stop start cycle the engine stutters on start up. Intermittently the engine would restart with all conditions being maintained to remain in the stop part of the cycle(A/C off, brake pedal being depressed. vehicle at stand still, level surface) Read more

Not sure I can help with the stuttering bit, but battery voltage is also monitored. When the voltage drops below a certain level on these systems, the engine will restart regardless of the other "stop" conditions being met.

As said. In wintertime, remember there is a lot greater load on the battery - lights, heated screens, etc. As such, a lot of people with auto start/stop cars tend to think the system is faulty in winter, because it never (or rarely) kicks in, or the car will just re-start itself for (seemingly) no reason.

Worrier

Im not sure if I scraped a car in a car park today - I saw scratches on the other car, but as I hadnt felt any impact thought they must have already been on the car. I moved to a different space as my space was very tight, and when I went to my passenger side to get my bag I noticed a very minor scratch on my wheelarch - this has made me question if the marks on the other car were left by me?

I walked up and down a few times but could not figure out which car it was that i might have scraped. (there were a few scraped up cars in the car park and as I'm a bit of a worrier I had worked myself up into a state and was having a panic attack). As I couldnt figure out which car it was I couldnt leave a note.... Read more

A good reason for buying an electric car – they seem to be deemed worthy of much larger parking spaces at the charging points. The clearance they require in order to plug in shouldn't be any greater than that required for an occupant to get out of a door in any other car, so why the huge spaces?

I understand (I may be wrong) that having passed the LGV test in an automatic vehicle, one is then also entitled to drive a manual LGV.

The DVLA site states that 'you need to have a full car licence to qualify to learn to drive a bus/lorry'.... Read more

Not True. If you pass a licence category in an automatic vehicle then that category of your licence will have code 78 - restricted to vehicles with automatic transmission on that licence class. At least that the way it should work ! The DVLA staff bless them have been known to make errors and omissions

You are wrong, if you've got a manual car licence and pass a HGV test on an auto you will automatically qualify for a full licence incuding manual lorry entitlement, further dumbing down of actual skills whilst we tick publicity boxes with utterly pointless d*****, ie drivers certificate of competence DCPC.

What do you expect in a country where common sense has been systematically abolished.

I expect 30 years ago the hofficer nicking someone for something so trivial would have had the mickey taken mercilessly for months after by colleagues and possibly christened with an appropriate permanent nick name, it's now more than likely a pat on the head box ticked on the fast track promotion greasy pole....

In my Jaguar X-Type 2.0d (2005) I keep noticing an increasing smell as I have to stop and start/use clutch more frequently. It is not exactly a burning smell, it smells more like "old cheese". It doesn't smell at all when I drive fluently (outside a busy traffic or on motorways). The car was with a technician because of another matter recently and he didn't find any problem even though he tested the car. Do you have any suggestions what it could be? Should I take the car to a garage immediately? Many thanks. Read more

Just after a little advice if that's ok.

I have 4 kids, 3 little ones and a teenager. I've been looking at a few used limo's online, mostly ex funeral and wedding fleet stuff. They seem to be a very cheap way to get 6 plus seats with low mileage.... Read more

If you are buying this for your personal use and if local tax on the original purchase was charged then you should not have to pay any VAT or other import duties.

Bought 2 new tyres from xxxx and realised after fitting that 1 was defective. When I asked for a replacement/refund I was told that as they had been fitted they could provide no refund. So instead, I gave them an ultimatum. Either, make a small gesture off a replacement tyre and order through them, or provide no help and face having their name rubbished on the internet. They were not interested in providing any gesture with their faulty tyre and clearly not interested in my future custom, for the sake of £10-20 I would have accepted.
