Not sure if I scraped a car in a car park? - Worrier

Im not sure if I scraped a car in a car park today - I saw scratches on the other car, but as I hadnt felt any impact thought they must have already been on the car. I moved to a different space as my space was very tight, and when I went to my passenger side to get my bag I noticed a very minor scratch on my wheelarch - this has made me question if the marks on the other car were left by me?

I walked up and down a few times but could not figure out which car it was that i might have scraped. (there were a few scraped up cars in the car park and as I'm a bit of a worrier I had worked myself up into a state and was having a panic attack). As I couldnt figure out which car it was I couldnt leave a note.

I later (once I had calmed down) realised I could leave a note in the train station where the accident occured (which I did as soon as I returned, which was around 5 hours later), but now I'm not sure if I should call the police as well to prevent a 'not reporting an accident' charge. I could do this but the only details I have were that i think i might possibly have scraped a black car in a large car park this morning, and as that is vague I am worried about wasting their time.

Anyone got any advise?

Yep - forget about it! If you don't even know which car you (might have) scraped a few minutes after doing it, then you will be doing yourself a disservice by reporting it. I applaud your honesty and concern, but it sounds like a bit of a nothing really. It happens, move on :-)

I agree, I watched a BMW X5 parking next to my car a couple of years ago, it took about 20 odd moves for them to get in, but hit and scratched mine twice

when I spoke to the driver they swore blind they didnt touch my car, well they did,I saw it happen, but in all honesty the size of the motor was enough to prevent any feeling that you hit another car

I do see this a lot in car parks, but no one claims on the insurance as the cost is less than the excess, and people are not caught as generaly a minor scratch or dent is never caught on camera (ie bump is too small to notice)

I wouldn't worry if the letter didn't get an answer. My car has been dinged and scratched quite noticeably several times in supermarket car parks.

Recently we tried to park at the tesco in Macclesfield on a Saturday. The car park was quite full and the bays and the access ways are meanly dimensioned. I drove into a bay front ways and before I could straighten up a 'lady' came around the rear of the adjacent car, preventing me from reversing. She opened the rear door of her car with difficulty and a mean expression came over her face and she forced the door into the side of my car and almost climbed into her's. I had to wait until she had gone before I had straightened up and looked for damage. The plastic trim had a crease in it where her door edge had been. I moved the car to the other end of the car park. Why didn't I say anything at the time ? Because I didn't want to be screamed at and she certainly looked as though she had a bad hair day.

One easy way to know - go back, scrape your car against theirs in place you though it might've originally happened. Then you'd know...for sure. Less to worry about.

Toodle-oo!

I used to lay out car parking spaces for my local council. As I remember it the dims were - 4.8metres by 2.4metres. I don't know if that's BS dims or Min of Trans but your local library could help. If the car park dims aren't of that size then........., here I have no advise but they may or not be 'legal'.

By making the parking bays SMALLER and so create 235 more

I used to work in an office opposite the Waterloo St carpark in Glasgow. Used it daily with no issues. 4 months ago after a lapse of 20+ yrs I needed to use the carpark - previously 1970s-1990s cars now have a CRV - the carpark entrance lanes tight, the corkscrew between floors tight & parking spaces tight. Nightmare, I was glad to find a space on 1st floor. Coming down was easier but again exit lanes tight - the carpark is the same concrete -cars have got much wider + fatter tyres (and older driver!)

When I was in a car-park the attendant told me that the bays had been laid out when people had Morris Minors and Ford Anglias. Cars have become wider and the bays hadn't. He'd seen mature ladies with hatchbacks climb in through the hatch and work their way through to the drivers seat before reversing the car out.

A good reason for buying an electric car – they seem to be deemed worthy of much larger parking spaces at the charging points. The clearance they require in order to plug in shouldn't be any greater than that required for an occupant to get out of a door in any other car, so why the huge spaces?
