Hoping someone has some advice. The car has been driving fine, no warnings or anything. Today it started making a vibrating sound which seems to be coming from the engine. It's puzzling as it only makes the noise when I lift off the accelerator. It doesn't do it when idling, when depressing the clutch and the noise isn't there if I have my foot on the accelerator. It is only when in gear and coasting (like when I was going downhill and lifted off). It's worrying me as I have a 360 mile journey to do in a few days as we're moving home! I would be so grateful for any advice. Thank you. Read more

Hi, my treasured Rover 75 blew her CH gasket and literally frazzled her engine so I thought I might as well get another from a scrapyard.

Found one allegedly from a 35,000 mile car...to be supplied with NEW CH gasket, pressure tested, new water pump and belts, 2 month warranty.... Read more

The design life for most cars is 10 years. At most.

Then why do they bother with a complex anti-corrosion process, which (barring accidents) will last a lot longer than that? I suppose it must be because they are stuck with some corrosion warranty. We all know that many - perhaps most - cars become valueless at that age, but that is not usually because they are clapped out. It's because buyers are bored with that model....

We am going to Spain again in a few weeks for a pre Christmas break. I intend to hire a car for a week. I usually leave it to others to sort out cars etc but this is the second occasion this year I have needed to hire abroad. I used to have an annual policy with Insureance4carhire but in recent years we have not needed it. I am looking for short term cover probably on a trip by trip basis and Insure4carhaire only offer annual policies. I would appreciate any guidance or recommendations as to where to look for decent cover. Cheers Concrete Read more

Thank you all, rather belatedly thanks to BT 'improvement' works affecting the whole village broadband service for a few days. Recommendations noted and I will investigate.

On other matters, I have found Sixt to be good. All damage, even minor scratches are logged, and no Gestapo style checks at returns. I used to have annual cover with Insure4excess. It even returned my policy excess on a domestic claim on a policy at home. Form filling and much detail is required, but I would ask the same questions if I was paying out....

Not an unknown problem reported on google and HJ

The centre of the dash and the indent for a HUD reflects in the windscreen in nearly all daylight conditions. The dash itself is dark grey and the same colour in the E60 was not a problem.... Read more

Moved to Technical. From the limited information available, dirty battery terminals seem the most likely, followed by a fault weith the ignition/starter switch.

As more new cars are now without even a spacesaver wheel, what are the liabilities if you purchased and carried a full size spare? The spacesaver is not recommended for use on the front in my opinion and I'd rather carry all that extra weight of a full size spare and suffer the increase in fuel! The taxman gets his cut from that.

Eg. It places your car in a higher road tax band for one. Would an insurance company use this against your possible claim in any accident, I would not be surprised if they did. ... Read more

What would you do without a spacesaver, Harley, if you found yourself with a 2-inch gash caused by a pothole, on one of the 33,000 miles of UK roads where there is no mobile reeption?
