I have a 2003 plate XC70 with which I am generally delighted. however, it ghas recently developed a reluctance to start from cold. It will start faultlessly at up to 5 or 6 hours after last run; but leave it for 8 or 9 hours or more and it will not start without a shot of Easi-start in the air intake.
My local garage (usually very good) seem bemused; i have thus far had new glow plugs, new battery and a replacement injector which was stuck apparently. These have improved its capacity to start but not resolved the cold start issue.... Read more
Car will be left for a couple of months. Not sure whether it is wise or not to disconnect battery.
So you'd only get January back, or £2.50 !
Not worth the hasssle really at that but if the tax expires while you are away SORNing the car is essential to avoid a fine.
My car has just been into the garage, they disconnected the battery, radio lost code.
I've tried entering the code given which won't work.
Is there anybody that can tell me what my code should be?
My radio serial number is - M376030 Read more
ozziecj,
For radios whose Serial Number begins with an "M", followed by a six digit number, you can use the following link to work out what your Keycode should be:...
Sorry for the long post.
I took my car into my local garage to investigate a fault with the ignition. RAC said it was the ignition switch or wiring. Silly me, I told the garage that the RAC reported that the switch was faulty, but I failed to also mention the possible wiring fault.... Read more
I've never done much in way of car repairs. I have access to a lot of tools. It's just confidence. Thanks!

I've just had a trip in a Leaf from a company promoting a car club scheme.
The downsides of electric cars such as the Leaf - namely range - have been discussed to death, but as a car to drive for short hops around town - mine was a 5 mile out and back trip to a meeting - it was excellent.... Read more
I've often thought about the Leaf (also the Renault Zoe and unloved Fluence) as I run a small business where I have to do a lot of short local journeys. Even on busy days I rarely drive more than 60 miles per day.
However, the big killer with these electric cars is that regardless of whether one buys outright or leases, regardless of whether it's new or used, you still have to lease the batteries separately for, IIRC, about £50 per month, depending on mileage. That's what stopped me taking it any further....
can any one tell me if the fuel pump is coded thanks Read more
in October of this year, we parked in a Penance car park to go to the beach. We got our 2 small children (3&5) out with buckets, spades, picnic, change of clothes etc. and I went some way down the beach, away from the car park, with all the equipment and the children, while my wife went to buy a ticket.
When she got the the ticket machine, it was 'Out of Order' (I have a photo of this). She didn't realize at the time there were other machines in the car park and assumed that the whole system was out of order. She decided to come along the beach to the children and me.
When my wife arrived at our chosen spot and explained the situation, I settled them all down and I walked back along the beach to the car park (20 minutes since parking the car) and bought a ticket at another ticket machine that was in order, for our vehicle. When I went to the car to put the ticket in I saw we had a parking ticket.... Read more
Well GB. I think the sight of their letter made your dog laugh so hard it caused it to throw up. Definitely cruelty to animals. I would write to them demanding compensation for the distress caused and the cleaning material required to clean up because of this!
Timmus. The way you describe this makes it seem as if you have been harshly treated. If what you describe is a true and accurate picture of events then I would pursue this through the appeals procedure. Council PCN or private invoice it matters not. Armtrac have to provide you with the information to appeal. I have been through this and although a drawn out process it does work in your favour if your situation is genuine. So you will need to steel yourself for some letter writing and copying over the next few months, but stick at it. If you do I guarantee that they will withdraw before the hearing or not attend and you will win by default. Best of luck....
My Polo's ABS light is constantly on although the ABS works normally. THe local VW specialist suggested that it needed a new instrument binnacle which I had fitted at great expense. It made no difference. The light occasionally goes off for a while but most of the time it's on. Taking the ABS fuse out makes no difference. The car has done 56,000 miles and is in good condition otherwise. It won't pass its MOT, but I'm reluctant to scrap it. Any suggestions? Read more
I doubt the ABS is working normally if the ABS warning lamp is on. The brakes will work normally, and the car will be perfectly safe to drive, but the ABS function will be disabled.
Very few people will ever notice the ABS system anyway, unless you drive like Michael Schumacher. The only time you're likely to notice it is when you brake unusually hard on a wet or icy slippery road....
I am Product Manager at JustPark (which allows you to pre-book parking in 1,000 towns across the UK) and am looking to spend some time with people who drive a lot, ideally around London. Are you or is someone you know:
- Travelling sales person
- Delivery driver / man with van / courier
- Nurse / doctor doing home visits
- Mobile services (electrician, maintenance, travelling vet)
- Anything else involving driving, I'm not too picky!
It would involve me sitting in your van / car and observing your daily driving and parking problems, pain points and habits, ideally for a few hours. I'd want you to continue your day job as normal, with me asking the occasional question. Or if you're unable to do that, a phone call or Skype chat would do. I'm conducting this research and seeking inspiration for new features for our app and website. I can offer you some parking credit to use on JustPark in return. Read more

....she did get her money back, by the way!...
Assuming you don't have any loss of compression due to the continued use of combustible substances sprayed into the air intake, I would connect a scantool and read fuel rail pressure when cranking the engine. FRP needs to achieve around 10,000KPa (100 Bar or 1,470psi) before the fuel injectors are activated. If the FRP takes a while to reach this then fuel could be draining back to the tank over a period of time, or the pressure relief valve, high pressure pump or injector/s could be faulty. A leak-off test would confirm this.
Direct injection diesel engines which includes all common rails do not need, or employ, glow plugs for cold starting. Their purpose is to reduce noise and improve emissions when the engine is running cold. They only switch on for pre-heating when the outside air temperature is near freezing.
