Hi all - apologies if this is getting repetitive but I will soon be in the market for a new motor and have pretty much decided on a Subaru and an Outback if I can make the finances work.
The logic behind my choice is that I do a bit of country pursuits so the AWD will come in handy from time to time and I like their reputation for longevity.
The question is what fuel and gearbox type should I go for. I am a lazy driver so like the idea of an automatic (or CVT in Subaru case) but am not convinced it is the long term choice.
I do about 8k a year and 5 days a week it will be used to drive me to work 5 miles away my current car (520d SE) does not even get warm by the time I get to work.
Any views and thoughts would be appreciated. Read more

Hello all, I've just joined up to have a rant..
I know I'm not good buying cars - my mind seems to go blank when it comes to checking the car over. I also appreciate that second hand cars are not going to be perfect.... Read more
Phone and calmly arrange a time to take the car back in for a service and remedial work to the suspension. If you have paid a retail price for the car and it's not a banger, you do this now or reject the car under SOGA.
Otherwise, if anything else, potentially more serious, pops up with the car, do you think he is going to do anything other than swat you off?

Hello,
I have a 2003 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 Petrol Elegance. For the last few months it has been suffering with an intermittent problem which nobody can get to the bottom of. The car is low mileage and starts fine every day. When warm it will start to 'judder' and lurch, this resolves after a few minutes if you keep your foot pressed on the accelerator. However, if you need to stop or press the clutch in, the engine will not idle and it will stall. After a couple of minutes the engine will start up again and will run and idle fine. The problem will then repeat in another 30 mins time!!... Read more
Air leak on the inlet manifold?
Hi All,
I just bought a 2005 1.6 petrol for focus. The problem I have is as soon as I start the car it idles at 1200 rpm and stays there until the car is up to running temp. As soon as it gets to running temp the revs jump between 1300 to 1400 rpm and the throttle pedal doesn’t work. So I have to turn the car off to get it to go again, but as soon as I stop at lights for more than a couple of seconds it starts revving itself up and down again and the throttle doesn’t work again.... I've got a '56 reg Legacy Outback 2.5 litre auto which I've owned since new. The auto box is a pre CVT style with a fluid torque converter. Apart from an irritating spurious fault on the ECR it has performed flawlessly. I have it serviced by an independent every 5000 miles and do things before the recommended mileage. Present mileage about 98,000.
It tends to be expensive on fuel and tyres but it never gets stuck on bad roads or in icy conditions....
