Hi,
My 1997 Peugeot 106 1.1 passenger side gearbox to driveshaft oil seal is leaking very slightly..
I've ordered one from Fleaby, which should be here 2mrw.
www.rubberoilseals.com/photo/pl2691335-citroen_oil...g
I'm ok with getting the drive shaft and seal out etc ..
My cunning plan ;)
is to smear gearbox oil round ALL surfaces of the seal.
Would this be ok, or do certain parts have to be dry on installation.
I don't have any grease...
Do I really need some?, or will gearbox oil do? to lubricate the seal.
I am still trying to convince myself not to use the old gearbox oil to save £16 on the Total....
My thinking is that I can change that any any time, easy peasy through the breather cap up top , near the battery)
I am planning on using some wood , to tap the seal in gently, so it can't go further in , than level to the gearbox body.
I plan to hold the driveshaft's weight by a rope from up top,
and oil the driveshaft spline before insertion
and twist gently as it goes into the seal.
What do you reckon?
Any tips would be appreciated...
Cheers

When towing a caravan the fridge relay is intermittantly on and off.
Is there a problem with the alternator output. Have heard that Honda automatically reduce the voltage under low load conditions. Is this correct and if so, is there a solution? Read more
Quite a few modern cars have "smart" alternators which reduce the voltage according to throttle position. The traditional smart relay for caravan wiring isn't nearly smart enough and either cycles on/off at low frequency or chatters at higher frequency. Smart caravan relays can be adjusted but not low enough to avoid the problem, and if they could they'd stay on when the engine is switched off !
I resolved the problem by having a Durite 140A VSR fitted which styays latched once triggered....
Hi there,
This company - Friendly Car Insurance - offered me a very interesting insurance for my 2008 Astra. I am quite young driver so saving money is important for me.... Read more
I have just renewed my mk5 Astra insurance and was also with Aviva. I have now gone with Esure as the price quoted is £157 for the year with protected no claims. Ok, not quite a young driver being in my mid thirties but considering the model is the 200ps SRI I think it is a great price. Worth a call.

I think you might have a fully collapsed bearing and the sound is gear teeth being pushed hard against one another instead of meshing correctly.
Not the worlds hardest job to change the gearbox, as said above invest some dosh in a sustantial trolley jack (the most important tool the regular home mechanic can buy), and get a friend to help you with the lifting in/out of the box, check the clutch too....
Hello everyone.
I'll start by saying - I have no clue about cars. I work in IT and I research gadgets, tech and cameras day and night, however I never spent enough time on cars :(
I am driving a 2006 Astra which has started to show serious signs of wear and tear and would like to 'upgrade' (Is that even a term in the car market? :).
I did a bit of reading here and there and I am led to believe that with a budget of approximately 8k, a Focus 2012-current model would be my best bet. I do plan to commute, and I do plan to do long drives on the weekends, so I am guessing an 1.2 engine or such wouldn't cut it for me.
However - which is the best multipurpose hatchback of 3-4 years I should be looking into? Furthermore, what's the best mileage to go for given my budget is pretty much stuck at 8k tops?
Many thanks and sorry if the question is incomplete, or silly for that matter. Read more
You could get a brand new Dacia Sandero for your budget.
Why have a bit of old tech......
I am a single parent with 3 teenagers. Due to my disability I need a car with high seating. Something like a zafira size. Does not have to be a 7 seater.
Prefer it to be under 6 yeas old, budget around £6 but will stretch to £8k. Top of the need list is cruise control. Would love an auto.... Read more
The Santa Fe is also much bigger than most of the recommendations. It's a good contender if you want that size of car.
Hello List,
Can someone throw some light on the following problem I have been having with my 5008.... Read more
Hi All
I went through an amber/red light, probably more red than amber if I'm honest. On an opposite junction there was one of those mobile cctv police vans. Once I had gone through the traffic light they put the lights on the van and followed behind me. They were positioned to be going in another direction but then cut the junction, seemingly to pull me over. They didn't pull me, instead, they turned of their lights and pulled up next to me at the next set of lights without so much as even looking at me.... Read more
Maybe stop at red lights? :-)
You'll just have to wait and see if something comes through the post. They don't stop you at the time so probably a co-incidence that they drove off at the same time. Although it could quite possibly mean they weren't recording at that time if they were about to move.
Hoping this is just the cam cover gasket. Is it worth replacing just the gasket or do these plastic covers warp over time and won't seal even with a new gasket? Maybe an engine degrease, cross fingers and forget about it instead? It's just annoying as you can smell the oil in the car, especially when the engine is warm. Car engine runs great BTW, quiet and sweet as a nut with no noise or smoke from exhaust hot or cold. 2ltr MK1 Focus petrol with 89k on it. Thanks.

Gasket is cheap so worth a try if damaged.
Plastic covers are fine but the original alloy ones were better. The alloy ones will fit but need some fettling around the top belt cover to work.

Thanks everyone, for putting my mind at rest.
It has arrived today, & I was surpised at how solid it is.
Cheers
