Dip finger in it, dab finger on tongue, if it is condensate from aircon it will taste like water, if it tastes of antifreeze you have a leak.

If it tastes of cat wee, you won't do that again!

Simply itemise your uninsured losses and make a claim against the third party when you reclaim your excess.

Recovery of your excess will preserve your no claims discount - usually.

Expect the third party's insurers to haggle and argue about your uninsured loss claim. You have a common law duty to make these fair and reasonable - e.g. If you hire a car it needs to be reasonable in terms of the one written off. I'd probably be claiming for 2 weeks car hire after receipt of settlement so that I could find a replacement.

Be reasonable, state your claim clearly and back it up with facts and receipts.

Of course if it's in the hands of a rip off claims management company then you may find your hands tied to dealing through them.

Hi

My parents have an immaculate 2003 Merc E270 cdi with around 70K on the clock. I know the E class of this period hasn't a great reputation for reliability but theirs has been great and has just sailed through its MOT once more. It is getting too big for my mother so they are looking for an easy sale without the hassle and risks of selling privately. I know a few years back HJ recommended BCA Sure Sell strongly but it is my understanding that as BCA have bought out We Buy Any Car they have discontinued this service. Other than WBAC can anyone recommend what they consider the best way to dispose of a car without feeling short changed. Thanks in advance... Read more

OK skidpan, my tax arrived in the post, I thought WBAC sent it. Thanks for the correction.

They offered me £6300 online and after looking at the car which had a lot of chips on the bonnet, offered me £5660. I got up to leave and the man offered me £6000, he wouldn't go any higher and as I'd been offered only £5700 by the dealer I took it.The money was in my account in 3 days. ...

I bought one and promptly creased up the longitudinal frame on my 1975 BMW 2002tii. The "pad" is small enough (like the one in your picture) to neatly fit between the vertical side pieces. Why don't these come with decent "soft" pads? I found the same or similar problem with the axle stands. They all curve up at the edges making for a good high pressure on a flat part of the car. It seems a bit of a "faff" placing wood pads on the things and hoping nothing slips! Read more

I would suggest using better quality items, for example Melco axle stands by Thomas Meldrum, made in Sheffield, England, not China. King Dick, another old British company make much better tools than Clarke, yes more expensive, but much better quality, so just buy what you need and they will last a lifetime.
I would echo the comments above about care when working on new cars, they do not lend themselves to DIY, but one can do some jobs if you take care.

Hi There,

I have recently purchased a new Audi A1 straight from the dealer. Within a couple of months I noticed a rubbing/squeaking noise whilst the steering wheel was on full lock. It went back to the garage half a dozen times but they could not hear the noise or find anything wrong.... Read more

Hello,
Am after some advice. My Toyota Corolla verso vvti 1.8 (2002) with only 95000miles on the clock is starting to burn a lot of oil (1 litre to 500miles).I have taken the car to 3 mechanics.

a.First mechanic plugged his computer into the car and said it was my catalytic converter and I needed to change it,he said even though the car was burning oil the smoke coming out of my exhaust when he revved the car wasn't oil smell.

b.Second mechanic told me it was my stem seal valves that needed which cost a lot of money so I was better off selling car.

c.Third mechanic told me it was my piston rings and would cost a lot of money to replace it and that I was better of using thicker oil i.e 10w40 part synthetic and add an oil stabiliser like "Lucas heavy duty oil stabiliser" which I could by from the web.

The car is not smoking at the moment, you will have to rev it hard for loads of smoke (which looks either blue or white) to come out.

So who is telling me the truth?Am I better off going to a Toyota dealership for them to examine it for me?Thanx

this is a known issue with the vvti engines, Toyota would replace it under warranty but your car is too old for that.

if your looking to keep it stick to a cheap supply of 5w 30 and live with it....

Have a look at the current thread on the Mazda 3: I'm not sure if the 2.2Ds are all the same, but some people are still having problems.
