Got a VW Polo Driver on hire, the gauge says I have 5 kms of fuel left, how much have I really got? Read more

I think maybe only Bromptonaut might have read the OP's post correctly. This is a hire car and maybe the OP does not want to hand it back with a full tank of fuel they won't get compensated for.

I think I'd just put a couple of gallons in as and when.

When you say doesn't take throttle, do you mean it's stuck on idle? The throttle pedal has no effect at all?

A 5wXX oil is good for temps as low as -35c and I doubt you'll have that often in France.

A few years ago we had -10c in London but, it does not happen that often and I'd not base my oil choice on it. Although at the time the thickest oil I was using in my toyota was a 10w40 and the other car was on 5w40. So both were well within range. ...

mousetarget

This is quite scary and now has happened to me a few times of the last few weeks.

The car will suddenly rev over 6000rpm, no matter what gear I put it in, the revs do not come down, the car then continues to keep its speed at a constant pace without me touching the accelerator pedal - this lasts for about 20 seconds and then the revs return to normal and I have full control of the accelerator pedal again. Afterwards there is a strong burning smell from the engine.

Anyone have any ideas? Read more

It’s a 3-litre petrol manual. At certain loads the clutch is slipping and the engine revs are rising with no increase in road speed, standard worn out clutch behaviour. The revs quoted in the original post indicate that the rev limiter is stopping the engine self-destructing. The “strong burning smell” is an indication of further destruction of the clutch friction plate. The heat generated will have also started to affect the cover plate. Assuming that Mousetarget is not riding the clutch pedal then the car needs a new clutch assembly, complete.

Can anyone help oil light came on briefly so stopped amd topped up but then got a rattle like the timing chain but mechanic says timing is ok and most likely needs a new engine as it could be the bearings is this right as its a 2010 and only done 30,000 miles. Thanks for replies Read more

The oil light indicates a lack of oil pressure caused in this case by low oil level - you are supposed to check the engine oil level with the dipstick as detailed in the owner's handbook and top up as necessary BEFORE the oil light comes on.

By the time the oil light illuminates it's usually too late and the engine will be toast - as your mechanic has confirmed.

Any ideas as what might be causing my battery to go flat if the car is left unused for 3 or more days. It's not the interior light. Read more

Hi

Just had first service on Audi A3 sportsback 1.4 SE TSFI (cod). Since collecting my car, it seems to run away with itself. It runs around 2000 rpm. I was in traffic today and was coasting in first gear, with no foot on clutch or accelerator and it was doing 5 mph with me just steering, it increased to 9 mph in 2nd gear and 12 mph in 3rd gear. I have known this happen on my old deisel cars, but it never used to happen to this petrol car before the service. ... Read more
