I am looking for a small family car with a maximum budget of £4,500 maximum. I really want a car which offers the following, in order of preference too...

Just ordered CX-5 for September and want to buy a spare wheel.

1. Will a full size wheel (preferably one of the gunmetal 19 inch alloys supplied with the car) fit in the space where a spare wheel would go if supplied?... Read more

I have a Xantia Estate 2.oHDi with 147k on the clock. Its always been lucked after but has peeling laquer, a few bubbles on the wheel arches and a tiny hole where the rear door shuts (near the wheel arch mechanic says £20 to stick a patch over it). It also needs about £250 - £300 spending on it for the MOT. Got it from a local nloke who moved to South of France, dorve it there then realised it was not going to work with a RHD in a LHD country and drove it back 3 months later to pick up a french reg car in the UK.

Question 1 Appears to be a rare beast now so am wondering what to do with it.... Read more

Hi all,

We've got a 2009 Ford Fusion with tiptronic style gearbox, 37,000 miles. It broke down while driving the other day and gives 'Transmission Error' on the dash.... Read more

These semi auto robot transmission systems are far from perfect and an absolute nightmare to fix economically.I would not spend a penny on fixing this .Take the trade in offer or stick it on flea bay as spares or repair.

Had engine malfunction warning popping up for a month or two now. No other effects - car running fine. Got round to getting the codes read.

Lots of spurious ones apparently. 29. Things like brake light bulb and ABS - nothing wrong with either.... Read more

Nothing. Apart from engine malfunction warning, occasional incorrect bulb warning and, of course, these 29 faults on reader.

Car would not start earlier , plenty of warning lights on the dash and i could hear the battery in the rear boot making some drained noises. I can see the usual leads plus 2 smaller connections so i am hesitant to remove it for recharging or replacing . until i understand the implications . Anyone got any suggestions as it cant move in its present state , Many thanks , Brian. Read more

I read that the Seat Leon Estate is more firmly sprung than the Golf, which otherwise appears to be identical.

Is this true - to draw younger buyers perhaps?... Read more

I read that the Seat Leon Estate is more firmly sprung than the Golf, which otherwise appears to be identical.

There are 2 suspension types on the platform used by both the Golf and Leon. When we bought our Leon only Leons with more than 150 PS got the fully independant set up whereas Golfs with more than 120 PS got the fully independant set up....

After some decent motoring chat in our local at the weekend, which then led predictably onto how poor the regional driving environment is these days in Surrey/Hants borders, the following 'survey' question was dreamt up in the ale backwash.

It's very simplistic, but I rather like it - strikes a nice poser, and fuelled some good honest debate. Be interested to see which choice HJ forum members would take.... Read more

The key to this is your first para about driving conditions in the Surrey/Hants boders. I was brought up in Farnham, the lived for 40 years near Reading, and have now retired to Dorset (well, semi-retired anyway).

So I know where you're coming from, and if a Golf GTI could be included in Type 2, that's the answer - and even f it couldn't, a Golf, Leon, A3 or Octavia with the 1.4 TSI surely could. Just how many miles in the British Isles can be covered by a Type 1 car with appreciably more enjoyment than by a Type 2? Not many, I think....

Hi

Just wondering if anyone knows where I could get spare glass for the after market Hollandia sunroof system put on the Scirocco MKII. Unfortunately my glass has shattered and it is not easy to replace! Nothing at breaker yards yet unfortunately. Looking like a new sunroof system can be installed - any other suggestions or recommendations (other than sealing it).... Read more
