Just purchased a Fiat Punto as a cheap car to give to a friend who's desperate for some wheels to get her kids around. All good when we drove away, needs a wheel bearing but not aware of anything else.
Got it home and gave it a clean, I discovered that there was some corrosion on one of the battery terminals. I wiped the corrosion away. When starting the engine afterwards there were two warning lights on! Engine management and power steering. I'm really worried now as it's been a big stretch to pay for the car and really can't afford expensive repairs, but equally can't give it to my friend with problems as she definitely won't have the resources to fix it. :0(
We were so pleased to have found her a nice car but now feeling deflated. Any advice gratefully received! Read more
I am concerned as the brand new SLK we are due to sign the contract on does not appear to be new. We have been provided the registration but on the finance paperwork the car model and spec has 2013 against it. From investigating the chassis number, which I presume is the same as the VIN, the car was manufactured in Jan 2013 (according to a russsian website), so I accept this may not be tottally accurate.
The dealer, who are Merc woned, have not told me the car is ancient. It is not being sold as a pre-reg and will be 15 plated. ... Read more

A friend of mine has Jaguar X Type 2.0 L diesel and had problems something like those described. Took the car to a Jaguar specialist who couldn't find anything wrong. So they contacted Jaguar who informed them that there was a software update which would solve the problem.
It did!

There was a TV programme a few weeks ago that featured a company that sells classic supercars in Kensington and a company that sells clapped out cars to people who can't get credit and fits an immobiliser that they can activate if you don't pay the installments.
Is this credit a loan or secured on the car?...

I have 215/50 Z R17 tyres with little wear from my (now scrapped) 2002 Primera 2.0l petrol, still on the Primera's alloys. Can I safely fit these alloys onto my 2012 Qashqai +2 which has 215/60 R17 96H fitted?
If anyone can help or point me in the right direction - Thank you.... Read more
Quite right Gordon. My apologies, I'd not read the starting post properly, and had assumed it was re-mounting the tyres onto the Qashqai wheels.
I have a 2007 2.2 Diesel. I love the car but I have an ABS issue that is driving me mad and the quotes from the main Honda agent to rectify seem a little steep. :o(
When the ABS light first appeared, the codes indicated something was wrong with the sensors on the rear wheels, both sides. I replaced the sensors on both rear wheels, and have checked with an oscilloscope, and can see the sensors pulsing as I would expect as I turn the wheel.
When I start the car and begin to move off the ABS light goes out - but then when I hit 20 / 30mph the lights come back on again.
The Honda main dealer suggests that this is because the sensors were not genuine Honda. I find this a little hard to believe - I can see the waveform being generated by the sensors - however admittedly I don't have a reference trace to compare with, and I can't tell what the signal is like at speed. (I'm seeing around 0.9v pk-pk at low speed truning the wheel by hand.) There is a large difference in cost between the dealer supplied part (£160 each!) vs the independently obtained part (£20 each), and I doubt third party suppiers would bother to sell them if they don't work.
Is there some sort of calibration that must be done in order to 'tune in' the new sensors, or are Honda's unusually sensitive to non-honda supplied sensors?
Can anybody point me to a wiring diagram showing the pin out at the ABS control unit end so I can check the wiring looms?
Thanks! Read more
Did you manage to sort out the problem? I have similar issue

Researching-researching always aware of new points of view. I unfortunatelty bought a new Ford Mondeo, to replace our lovely 22 year old Granada. Being the only chain drive engine, it was Hobsons choice. (Can you believe they actually put a rubber band, inside an engine. And some people buy them !) Anyway, it came with Goodyear tyres on 16 inch wheels. Downgrading to a humble Mondeo was bad enough, but the ride was made even worse by the awful harsh little tyres. The consensus of opinion was to change the size of the tyres to 215, and the brand to Cooper. I am not a boy racer, but I can say without a doubt that this combined purchase has helped. It will never be a silk purse etc. I will only be buying Cooper tyres from now on, I can't afford to experiment with others. Read more
I'm glad you've found tyres that suit you better, though i expect the tyres and the car itself are bigger and heaver than your grannie (superb cars) whilst having no more room inside..:-)
On the subject of timing chains versus belts, i think on balance i'd rather go with the timing belt thanks, seeing how many modern cars now suffer with repeated timing chain problems...i haven't a clue how Ford fares in this by the way....
Thank you! Both lights have gone off now. Think I might see how it goes for a couple of days and take it from there. Had the battery checked and no problems. Car is still driving fine and the power steering is working well. Will get a diagnostic if the lights return though.
