Help needed in diagnosing please
Vauxhall Astra 2007 reg, engine power loss, felt like going to stall at traffic lights and so took to a mechanic for diagnosing and fixing.
1st suspicion - head gasket
Compression test results as follows:
Cyl 1 - 30PSI
Cyl 2,3,4 all between 170-180psi
Work reported to me went as follows:
Head stripped and sent to machine shop
Head "all done and returned to mechanic"
Valves reseated
Mechanic suspects valves were the cause, causing pitting causing no seal.
Allegedly a miscommunication with engineering guys - they didn't complete the valve lapping.
Piston rings appear to be ok, wet & dry readings result in no change - mechanic contacts engineering company to follow up on what occurred with head work. Mechanic orders 4 new hydraulic lifters.
No signs of cracked head, head was pressure checked and passed
New lifters fitted - no change. Mechanic explains there little more he can do besides remove the head again and recheck it.
Mechanic explains - "at the moment I'd have to remove the head again to see if I can find anything. There is no scoring on the bore. Wet compression test proved the piston rings are good. The valves are seated. The only thing I can think of is a hair line crack on the head that has been missed. As far as cost goes, there's the cost of the head gasket, head bolts and new oil" (plus labour, mechanic is currently asking for just shy of £500 for work up to this point, albeit undiagnosed and not fixed).
Mechanic goes on to explain:
Head has been skimmed
Head gasket replaced
A crack on the head may have been missed by machine shop and mechanic
There's little else that can be causing loss of compression
Mechanic currently believes that he needs to recheck the head as he's exhausted other possibilities including some checks on the valves, and spark plug threads.
What's missing? What hasn't been checked? What other info is required for an accurate diagnosis?
Thanks in advance

Our 99 1.6 Astra only gets used as a second car 2-3 times a week for trips of 2-5 miles typically each. Until this year it gave no problems on its previous regime of daily Monday to,Friday trips mostly of about only a mile. However a few times recently I've needed to use jump leads to get the car started. I then give it a quick 10 mile trip and all is well for a week or two before it recurs. The battery is around five years old but the garage says it tests as being OK. We do have an intermittent yellow dash light that seems typical of aged Vauxhalls but I don't think that has any bearing on battery charging? Are we simply not using the car enough? if so any views on how much we need to step up the frequency/mileage would be appreciated. Read more
Thanks for advice folks. The light is the engine management/control indicator. Its a well-known source of Vauxhall alarms real and false. One wag on another site says if you have never seen it light then the bulb must have failed! Anyway the last twice its been lighting up - at times not related to the starting issue - the main dealer has reset at no charge with no fault found. It covers a range of functions which the handbook says are related to injection, idling and over-run cut-off. So there is no obvious connection to the current battery problem. I only mentioned in case there is an obscure connection that someone was aware of. I will get hold of a charger and boost the battery and see how it goes from there.
Hi, I have a renault megane 1.5 DCI with the K9K732 106BHP lump.
Basically the exhaust manifold has cracked and is in need of replacing. I have ordered a new manifold off eBay and it should be here early next week,... Read more
"What do you think the chances are the exhaust manifold will come off with ease".
This depends on how rusty the bolts and threads have become over the past year. If easing oil is used by a skilled technician, the chances are that they will come off OK. ...
Hi Guys
after a nightmare with my 2013 Vauxhall Insignia Elite with only 17000 miles on her, i have had enough, the finance company are giving me all my money back, have had nothing but problems! AFL Malfunctions, creaks and noises, vibrating and whistling type! cant take anymore, a shame as i loved the car apart from that lol! not risking getting another :-(... Read more
You can find the differences in specs in the car-by-car reviews on this site, and also on Audi's website.
Generally Audis have, in ascending order, SE, Sport and S-line trim levels. S-line moidels usually have larger wheels and firmer suspension, although standard suspension is a no-cost option. If youre buying used, you'd need to see what option was fitted....

Thanks very much for your input all - turned out it was just a blown fuse, fortunately! I'm back where I started, which is preferable and, at the very least, I've learned a little bit by taking stuff apart/ having a tinker... The indicator not self-cancelling is no biggie, just thought I'd do it while I had the opportunity - if I do end up fixing it, I'll make sure it's from a Mk5 Fiesta/ the part numbers match!
Also managed to nab a couple of other bits while it was there - swapped a wing mirror, parcel shelf, and rear wiper casing - there's a bit less to go wrong with those!
Hi
I had the problem that the car would need three or four attempts to start before firing up sometimes when hot but was quite rare, I had a quick look at the crankshaft sensor and the wires were so bare I was amazed it worked at all, so bought a cheap Delphi one for £20 rather than £156+vat from dealer and when I fitted it, it was worse than before, now it wouldn't even start and now the engine light was on with code on scanner PO335 crankshaft position sensor circuit A, so took it off and put old rubber ring off as it was stopping the sensor from going in all the way and now it starts but cuts out a few seconds after as if I've turned off the ignition and PO335 keeps coming up on scanner even when cleared.... Genuine parts work correctly.Aftermarket sensors usually don't ,and cause more trouble,as youhave found out.Remember;buy cheap ,buy twice.

Talk about one step forward, two back, i think i must have upset his lordship upstairs.

Hi there, I will explore these options , my email mrbhammonds@hotmail.com
If you have any other aids , maybe a diagram , even a pencilled one, detailing the positive crocodile clip to a fuse and the negative to a bracket on the chassis would be a great help..thanks for pointing me in this direction. The car is at work but i will have another look tomorrow. I know i can see the alternator , cant remember if the positive connector is visible , if i go with that option where does the neg. lead go ? (Lets hope its not the alternator thats duff!)
Having problems getting into and out of 2nd gear it's doable but takes some doing all the other gears are absolutely fine help please it's driving me mad! Could it be something as simple as greasing it Read more
You're unlikely to get a response to an 8 year old post especially as the OP never responded to any questions.
Is that Peter in the car?
That cannot be road legal. I can imagine being at traffic lights beside that car, then later on wondering why the paint on the side of my car is charred and flaking.

The mechanic revisited the machine shop and allegedly received advice on carrying out the "wet test" which proved the piston ring as faulty. New quote is at £1100 including labour, parts, service, and MOT excluding any work done necessary if MOT fails.
