My car was serviced a couple of weeks ago and I've just checked the oil for the first time. It's over the maximum mark on the dipstick.

Does this matter, and if so what needs doing? Read more

Quicksilver

If it is only a little over, (say no more than 1cm) then just leave it.

If it is 2cm or more then you probably should drain out about 1 litre....

Just started looking into getting a Mini but am a bit overwhelmed!! It will be mainly used as the second car but cant decide which to get. Mrs would love the convertible but I think the 3 door is more suitable. Any recommendations and is there much spec difference between a One and a Cooper. Will be getting new but dont want to spend a small fortune on extras. Read more

My wife is on her sixth Mini so I'll try to help.

Two of hers were convertibles: this is the least practical version but as our other car is an Octavia estate this wasn't a priority. But her last two have been Roadsters and these have been better in that the rear seats - near to useless in the convertible - have been ditched in favour of a very reasonable boot. And there's room for a space-saver spare wheel with the Roadster, which IS a priority....

My 2008 220 E has suffered a front suspension coil spring failure after only 55k miles. The failure was not caused by an accident or pothole. In fact it occured whilst the car was parked on our driveway.

This cannot be considered a normal failure, particularly at such low mileage.... Read more

Hi there

Considering splashing out on some new wheels and have seen several attractive PCP deal offers. However to save any hassle I would like to part exchange my current car at the start of the PCP arrangement.... Read more

leaseman

If your part exchange is worth a lot more than the required initial payment, then the monthly payments are going to reduce significantly, and, when it comes to changing cars next time, there is a risk that these monthly payments will rise dramatically. and all Finance Companies are afraid that this would be (mis) reported to the FCA who took over compliance duties on consumer credit last year.

My simple advice; Sell your swapper to a web-site buyer, so you are in the pound seats. Pay the required minimum deposit and enjoy your new car.

Hi can anyone help just had to change the battery on my van and I do not have the radio code any ideas where I can get this. Serial code on radio is V094820? Read more

Galaxy

For radios whose Serial Number begins with a "V", followed by a six digit number, I'm afraid there is no Keycode generator available for you to work out the code yourself.

You will either need to visit your local Ford Main Dealer, or there are sellers on Ebay who claim they can supply the Keycodes for "V" Serial Numbers, for a fee.

Interesting 6-minute video here of the fastest street-legal car in America, a turbo big-block Camaro. 615 cubic inches, 2150bhp at the wheels, and it ran sub-7 second passes for 5 consecutive days in Hot Rod Magazine's 'Drag Week' competition, in which the cars must compete at a different drag strip every day, and have to drive (not be trailered) between them (1000 miles total over the 5 days).

Not only did it run 6.72 seconds at 217mph, it's also capable of 11 miles per (US) gallon on the highway.... Read more

I suspect it depends on the type of car and make and model. I drive small city cars, and one I bought at 4 years old cost me more per year than the next one bought new. I do high mileage, and after 7-8 years repairs start to cost. My earlier cars fell to bits at 9-10 year old. If you do repairs yourself then older makes sense. A new car comes with free warranty work for three years, new tyres, clutch etc, and with luck low repair costs for maybe 7 years. A one year old car might make sense, you get a big price drop, with most of the life left. But a broker can often source a new car for less than a one year old car.

Thought it was the water pump leaking.

The garage who had asdvised this last week took car into fix Good Friday at 8.30am and found it is the plastic thermostate ( near water pump ) leaking not the water pump.... Read more

MrEckerslikefromRamsbottom

Well, er, now your asking... If it's anything like the one on my Fiesta diesel, it'll be a thermostat integral in a plastic housing and the complete unit has to be changed. Otherwise, if the thermostat is a separate unit inside the housing, then 'appen a new gasket or housing and seal can be fitted. You'll need a Hayne's or check what the parts look like on e-Bay.

As for letting the garage do it, well, the chap will just do what he's asked to and only a diligent mechanic will tell you if there's any other problems which get uncovered. Let me tell you a little story... ...
