I have a problem with cylinder 3 is misfiring but it's not the coils or the spark plugs rather its a lack of compression. The compression test on cylinder 1 and 2 is around 200 psi whereas on cylinder 3 it's around 100 psi. From reading online the tolerances on getting the valves in the cylinder head reseated appear very tight so it seems to be highly recommended to get a new cylinder head which obviously is going to cost a lot of money to fix.

My issue is that I'm not sure whether it's worth me spending this sort of money on my car or whether I should ditch it as I'm afraid the car may have reached the age where many things will start to fail. I've never had a new exhaust or brakes pads or brake discs or coils nothing really anything other than normal servicing things.

Two garages I have spoken to won't touch it which worries me they say they are too busy and the other garage that I have spoken to about doing the work think that I shouldn't scrap my car as I should be able to get another 100k out of it once it's fixed but obviously they are biased. I would really appreciate some advice as I have no technical knowledge in this area at all

As you have found out this is a big problem on the 3 cylinder engines.Unfortunately the repairs do not stop at the cylinder head. You are going to need a timing chain kit and an engine management software update.Could be looking at around £1500 plus ,for all this. Not worth it,in my opinion.

Fuels and their money

I remember reading the advantages you suggested from using the higher grade of petrol: more MPG and cleaner engine, etc. However, on our local radio station a so-called expert stated that using the higher grade of petrol was only beneficial to those with high performance cars and would be a waste of money in a standard everyday car. I have been filling up alternatively with the standard and higher grades in my Citroen which has yet to reach 70,000 miles. Your opinion would be appreciated.... Read more

the difference in price over standard Shell diesel was an astronomical 15p

I've noticed this galloping inflation in the dearer fuel recently (cunningly disguised by the general lowering of prices) and started a new thread on the subject called 'Prices for Higher Octane'

Hi,

Wondering anyone can give me a rough price or has had it done for replacing a new crossmember. The car is quite old but has been reliable to us so might be worth doing. Seem to be these cars achilles heal.... Read more

im the owner of a Zafira A 1.8 16v auto 1999 X18XE1 engine. Recently shes began misfiring slightly on idle and as the car warms up the juddering and misfiring becomes worse especially under throttle, ive also noticed that when im cruising around 40 the automatic transmition will shift to a higher gear so as the revs drop below 2000rpm and she begins to stutter and juddering, she stinks of petrol and is drinking it like no ones business.

Ive renewed the plugs, air filter, MAF,EGR, cleaned the throttle body and checked for vacum leaks.... Ive tried a salvage coil pack and nothing has helped.... any suggestions as my local garage are saying ecu whilst a local mechanic is saying to try a new coilpack... Read more

Thanks Trilogy, never seen that site before.

Favourite 4x4's, could be quite a few but i'm a (older and some of the more recent we don't get here) Toyota fan anyway, and that includes their simple 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' Hino truck division....

Well that's you profiled Roverboy....all insurance companies now know all about your boy racer tendencies to accelerate "too harshly". Expect an increase in premium! ;)

I didn't get the harsh bit. Only thing I can think of was accelerating from the Severn bridge toll booths. And I changed gears using the upshift indicator. 10 lanes into 3 in a short distance. Will try return journey tomorrow. There was me thinking I"m not too bad. Still offered me 10% discount. ...

Month 2 running a Hyundai Santa Fe: a road trip to Wales

A trip to Wales put 500-plus miles on the Santa Fe in a few days, and while it wasn’t exactly off-roading, there were some lanes on the Black Mountains steep enough to leave nothing to see through the windscreen but stars (had there been any).

This being Wales, it rained hard enough that only white lines distinguished streaming roads from actual streams. The Santa Fe was rock solid throughout – surefooted, uncomplaining, grippy and torquey. Occasional forays onto sopping 45-degree grass demanded the on-demand four-wheel drive<*** id="itxthook1icon" class="itxtrst itxtrstimg itxthookicon" style="padding-top: 0px!important; padding-right: 0px!important; padding-bottom: 0px!important; padding-left: 4px!important; vertical-align: baseline!important; margin: 0px!important;" src="http://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png" alt="" />, and it sorted everything out with less fuss than an experienced midwife.... I had a test drive in the 2013 SF, off all the cars i test drove it was easily the worst one to drive, the steering was awful.

Just my opinion.

Today, yet again, I waited at a checkout while the customer ahead paid for one small bottle of Coke. Not with coins, not with a note, but a credit card.

I have read a good deal about various Peugeots, 206, 306, 307, which had severe problems that were very difficult to diagnose. They were expensive to correct as diagnosis was often flawed. It turned out that a frequent cause had to do with dirt in the fuel, resulting from bad handling of a fuel filter replacement. Screwloose advised not changing the filter cartridge but instead changing the whole filter. As this would be a costly move, he must know there is good reason for it.

I wonder if there is a cheaper alternative. What would happen if you never changed the fuel filter? I suppose eventually it would become clogged and restrict the flow. That raises the next question: Is there a sensor measuring the fuel pressure imediately after the filter? If so, you could use this to provide a warning to change the filter after the longest practicable interval. ... Read more

Have you ever unwittingly bought a potentially dangerous counterfeit Xenon bulb? These fakes can blind oncoming drivers, cause your car's electrics to burn out, and make you and your car miserable.

PowerBulbs (the automotive lighting specialist, verified by Philips and OSRAM) is working in conjunction with BBC 1’s Fake Britain to help customers become more aware of these fakes. The show's producers would like to speak with anyone who has had the misfortune of buying a fake in order to establish the scale and seriousness of the problem.... Read more
