I agree that voters must have the say in who does and does not get into power, and PR with lists is bad. Troublesome non conformists who do a good job would not get on the list. You would end up with a bunch of toadies, sucking up to the party leader, but potentially useless in their constituency. At least we can vote for someone on the basis of competence. There are Labour politicians I would vote for, even though I hated the Miliband class warfare, chip on shoulder, politics.

I do wonder about MPs when Boris Johnson was both the editor of the Spectator, and an MP, and now he is both an MP and mayor of London. It rather makes a mockery of the system....

This combination is what Steve Cropley in last week's Autocar said would be 'the best in the world': the thought came to him after a trip in a Hyundai i20 which he found to be competent but very ordinary.

Any ideas from Backroomers as to any cars that combine Alfa soul with Hyundai quality and logic? If we get some good ideas I could pass them on to Steve C.... Read more

The just about to be launched MX-5 is a product of an 'Alfa' and Mazda tie up. The twist is their won't be an Alfa version. It will be a Fiat 124, as I mentioned earlier in this thread. Seems to be OK for a Fiat to be made in Japan, but not an Alfa.

Bought 5 months ago with full BMWSH and low miles( 79K) - thought I had got a good un - since then 4k miles later and now done 84K and has used 7+ litres of fully synthetic oil !! . No signs of leakage or plumes of smoke .

In an Owners forum conversation guy into oil says that use of fully synthetic oil creates a super glaze on pistons and oil seepage occures - says a common problem and recommends flushing and then use of standard mineral oil 10/40 and work engine to burn off the glaze.. slowly it will improve .... We have a 18 year old saab 9-3 which we have had since nearly new. At some stage it will need to be replaced but we are struggling to decide what to buy. We have 2 young children to accommodate, do ~6k miles a year including a couple of trips to France to visit grandparents, my preference is for petrol.

So far I have shortlisted:... Read more

Thanks for all your replies. Part of me is thinking that checking out a Auris estate or Civic estate would be sensible (although neither really set my heart on fire). As we don't do a high milage another option would be to buy an older lexus IS. This would satisfy my desire for something well built and a bit different. Thoughts?

How much space do you need? Note that the IS 250 only came as a saloon, and none had folding seats....

I have mentioned on other threads about having made a poor choice of car. It may be interesting to hear of mistakes people have made. Then, hopefully, learn from other people's errors.

My errors were when I bought a 4 year old 2007 Volvo C30 diesel. The errors can be divided into two categories.... Read more

When my wife's Punto was written off after being hit by a drink-driver, we needed a replacement. Our daughter was learning to drive at the time, and was learning in a petrol Corsa D, so we decided to get a nearly-new 1.2 petrol so she'd feel at home.

It's a dispiriting car to drive ... the Punto was cheap and cheerful but at least it was responsive and had a bit of vim about it. The Corsa's controls are just dull and dead, and despite it being the 82bhp version you have to thrash it mercilessly to get it moving on A-roads and motorways. Horrible drive-by-wire throttle too....

Can you please tell me how I find out the direction of the compressor fan of my sip compressor 150ltr workshop series 420/150?

Depends if the arrow is at the top or bottom of the flywheel if you see what I mean-just use the arrow to indicate direction of rotation.

I am sure that amongst our forum members there are some people who have visited Seville in Spain. SWMBO and myself are going there next week and would appreciate some advice. Especially on how to get from the airport to the city centre and also some 'must see' sights. We are there for 3 days before moving on to Toledo then Madrid. We know Toledo and Madrid quite well but have not been to Seville. Any useful comments welcomed.

Seville was really good. 22 Euros from the airport by taxi to our appartment in the old town. Very relaxed and friendly. Lots of good bars, tapas and restaraunts. Will go again as there were some things we missed. Overall to be recommended apart from the shoe shine boys, who are quite aggresive (they reckoned without swmbo) and sometimes the buskers who come to a group of tables, give you two bars of whatever and hold their hand out. Still 50 cents to get rid of them was worth it.
