Have owned my brilliant 335i Coupe auto for two years, following HJ's recommendation and am as happy as Larry, then:
A month ago I was on 4-lane M-way and floored the accelerator, and at an illegal speed the engine appeared to cut out, and multiple fault messages showed. Green Flag got me back to dealer who identified an electrical short between main cable and one of the junction box terminals. Both were replaced (expensively).
This week on a single carriageway whilst overtaking a lorry, accelerated hard and the same thing occurred: Loss of drive and engine cut out. This could have been extremely dangerous!
I was able to pull in to a field entrance. The engine had stopped, but the ignition was still on. Whilst phoning the recovery service, I tried starting and the car behaved normally. A dashboard message said that I could continue my journey at moderate speeds.
The sensation when the fault occurred was that the auto transmission had jumped out of gear. Maybe then the engine had switched off to prevent it lunching itself.
Have you heard of this before with the Steptronic box. The BMW dealer has no ideas. Should I contact an automatic transmission specialist near Manchester? Read more
Just wondering if any other lexus owners have experienced this issue with their GS300.
When I turn on my headlights both headlights work, after driving for about 3-5 mins the nearside headlight goes off.If I turn them off and on the light comes back on but will go out again in about 2 mins.If I turn off and on again for a third time, the light goes on again but this time it will stay on for the length of my journey.... Does this have standard halogen headlights or hid xenons?
The red charge light on my Almera comes on Intermittently. The battery sometimes struggles to start the car. If I charge the battery, the light no longer comes on. I can't make up my mind whether the battery has had it, or whether the generator is intermittently failing to charge. Does the red light mean that the generator is failing to charge, or that the battery voltage is low? Read more
Yes it's a known problem with me now- I wonder if Honda also has any suggestions as to who pays to source a part they should have fitted on production?
Went to test a car prior to purchase. Everything good but brakes suspect. Pedal needed pumping and when engine running, pedal very slowly went to floor. Dealer sent car to servicing garage for brake service and bleed. No leaks at master and wheel cylinders were visible. Afterwards, brakes were not much better. Both dealer and serving garage said brakes were fine. I'm still not sure. If there is a fault, what is it likely to be and should I follow my thoughts and reject the car? Read more
Handy to know about the brakes being standard, never knew that.
I know C5 of that model parking brake works on the front wheels so assumed the system was carried over from Xantia.

No warranty will ever cover consumables such as clutches and brake pads or wiper blades or bulbs.. That's just your misunderstanding. You need to have a fault caused by failure of say the clutch bearing or a hydraulic seal or some such, for a warranty to kick in.
If your relying on a warranty to cover basic running costs like these then imo then you've bought a vehicle you basically cannot afford. You'd be better off to sell it and buy a cheaper car or like the rest of us pay up and try to look happy. However painful that may be. ...
Hi all - I'm new here and looking for some advice.
My wife has asked me to find her a new car to replace an ageing Focus. Problem is, she has started a new job miles from tarmacked roads and has a specific requirements list:
* must be 4wd (despite my protestations to FWD and proper specced tires...)
* must be manual 'box
* under £7k
My initial trawls have met with mostly disdain -
• Hyundai Santa Fe (too big)
• Suberu Impreza (death on wheels)
• Audi (she hates the badge)
• Freelander (too slow, too small inside, dear to run)
• Skoda Octavia / Scout (I will look like a geography teacher in the minor counties)
If it were mine, I'd find a Mazda 6 MPS, or a Golf R32 - but there's the rub.
Any suggestions before we give up and get a Kuga/ Tiguan *dies slightly inside*
Many thanks in advance :)

I am looking to buy a used car to run 100 miles a day (should be highly economical) and low running cost - budget is short under 3000 pounds.... Read more
You will save a few pennies private but not that much to be honest. Safer if you can get it from a well known dealer.
Safer, probably. But you could save more than a few pennies buying privately - anything up to a grand if you expect a warranty with the car. Whether you buy privately or from the trade, you will need to check a lot of things about the car before buying, especially if you are looking for a reliable workhorse.

I've had another look on my lunch break and have more questions now (SORRY).

I'd try an independent gearbox specialist. One thing with BMW (and others) is that the gearbox oil is NEVER changed on a service. That probably needs doing now.
