I lost the will to live today. My car failed its MOT on the front number plate! I've found at least one previous thread where an MOT failure was caused by the slight "honeycomb" pattern on the white background of the front number plate. Mine failed today for the same reason. The thread I read was from 2009, I've had the same garage MOT'ing my car for at least four years and they've not failed it on this before, don't know why now. It's a personalised plate which I probably had made up at Halfords many years ago (it's been on three or four cars), it says "SIGNAM BS AU 145 a" in the bottom right corner. Can someone explain the rationale behind this sudden illegality of my plate? Read more

Its all down to the interpretation of the rules by the MoT tester.

You could go down the road to another MT tester and he would pass the plate and you would be £55 poorer....

Hi all,
I've just been reading details of the new high speed rail link ,that's proposed to link leeds and other major northern cities to london.

The building of the link which won't be completed for thirty years and has a proposed cost of £37 billion ,with massive disruption to property and communities along its route .

The suggestion is that the journey time from leeds to London will be reduced by 20 minutes ,and that will be a major benefit !

Several things occur to me ,what's the chance of a project like this coming in on budget ? It's not unusual for projects like this to double thier initial estimates .In addition benefits may not be realised for thirty years .

How about an alternative use for the £37 billion, improve access by improving road and rail links for commuters into city centres .

My journey into central leeds doubles when children are being driven to school from 20 to 40 minutes .Millions of commuters must suffer the same problem every day .If we improve access to major city and commercial centres .Millions of commuters will benefit ,not the 100'000 or so who travel long distance by train each day .

20 minutes individually saved by millions of frustrated commuters ,has got to be a better proposition .

Why not? Read more

Agreed. It's all to do with giving construction companies something to do. Also, if this government or the next one (which will almost certainly be Labour) needs to find a multi-billion pound saving in the next year or two, they can conveniently cancel HS2, and nobody's lost anything, apart from the construction companies, if work has started at the time .

I have a fault coming up on a Peugeot 307 HDi which states unblock fuel filter, When it comes on it puts the Engine Managment light on, the performance doesn't seem to alter and when you restart the engine the light goes out.

The fuel filter itself looks fairly new as if the previous owner may of had this problem before selling it!!... Read more

Yeah that's the message. I've put some DPF cleaner through it and it seems to be making a difference fingers crossed.

It''s also making a bit of a rattle when under load it's fine when on tick over and when you rev it up but when you're driving at about 1500 revs it rattle a little, any clues!!...

I have a 2011 vehicle owned from new with 13000 miles on.The rear suspension seems very noisy and"loose " sounding when going over uneven road surfaces - not necessarily rough.

I asked my dealer about it and he said it was fine and just shrugged it off,not sure he even road tested it, car is due for it'sannual service shortly so I am going to insist it is road tested with me.... Read more

I have a 2010 1.6 hatchback and it has been investigated twice since new (1st & 3rd Annual Service) with knocking noises from the suspension. Turns out there was a recall regarding the suspension and on each occasion they advised that the "Bump Stops" had fallen. Both times this was fixed under warranty.

Bank of England deputy governor Paul Tucker has said negative interest rates should be considered.

A negative interest rate would mean the central bank charges banks to hold their money and could encourage them to lend out more of their funds.

Speaking to MPs on the Treasury Committee, Mr Tucker said: "This would be an extraordinary thing to do and it needs to be thought through carefully."

He said it was one of a number of ideas that he had put up for consideration.

Hi there everyone. I have a 25cm scrape on the offside front wing from getting to close to a brick wall. The wing feels plastic to me. Whats the best way to repair it? Can it be sanded down and re-sprayed? or does that not work on plastic wings.
