MOT failure on front (white) number plate - GT

I lost the will to live today. My car failed its MOT on the front number plate! I've found at least one previous thread where an MOT failure was caused by the slight "honeycomb" pattern on the white background of the front number plate. Mine failed today for the same reason. The thread I read was from 2009, I've had the same garage MOT'ing my car for at least four years and they've not failed it on this before, don't know why now. It's a personalised plate which I probably had made up at Halfords many years ago (it's been on three or four cars), it says "SIGNAM BS AU 145 a" in the bottom right corner. Can someone explain the rationale behind this sudden illegality of my plate?

Either the rules have changed or your plate is on the margins. Why is there a honeycomb efect on the background?

On the subject of dodgy plates I pass a car daily with a plate that reads RIFLE.

Actually it's B1 FLE but with dodgy screws. Once a year, at MoT time, it wears a correct plate.

VOSA put out information last year that in MOT's it was to crack down on vehicles that did not display index marks which deviated in any way from Regs.

Looks like it is working

it says "SIGNAM BS AU 145 a" in the bottom right corner.

That would do it. A quick perusal of the regs indicates that compliance to BS AU 145 d is mandatory.

Its all down to the interpretation of the rules by the MoT tester.

You could go down the road to another MT tester and he would pass the plate and you would be £55 poorer.

Or you could spend £15 on a new number plate, get it retested for free within 24 hours of failure. Then if you really liked your original plate put it back on. Then you could spend the next 12 months enjoying your original plate and see if plod pull you for it. Then you could produce the new one from the boot and say " I was just about to change it Officer"

Happy days...........
