A friend has an Escort 1992. I suspect a headgasket fault as the coolant is oily in colour! I cannot understand however why the first plug in cylinder 1 is very oily, where it has oily deposits! The others do not have this however! Cylinder 1 has a low compression. The engine is 1.6 litre if this information helps.
Thanks for all your help!... Read more

Hi all,
I found clucth fluid leaking at the joint between the slave cylinder (iB5 transmission) and the connector fitted to the end of the hydraulic steel pipe. Haynes manual shows a photograph, in which an O ring is fitted to the connector. Anyone fixed this problem? Is the connector available as a separate item, will I have to buy the short steel pipe complete or could I replace the O ring only? Any suggestions most welcome.... Read more
Sorted,
New pipe, master cylinder to slave cylinder required from Ford, £39. As correctly suggested in an earlier Focus post, the leak was from a crack in then aluminium connector on the pipe that plugs into the slave cylinder, pity it's not available as a separate item....
Hi im new here and was wondering if anyone can help me. I need to replace the idler pulley on my G.V. Its the pulley located between the water pump and alternator. I have had some really high quoted for this part (about £90 + V.A.T),
I was wondering if i can overcome the fault by removing the other idler between the alternatorand AC pulley and use it in place of the faulty one and fit a shorter belt. Any feedback would be really welcomed... Read more

Further to the thread regarding the Hyundai ix35 delivery delays, the July figures for car sales in Spain are out today. Overall the market is down 24% for the month (end of sc***page plus 2% VAT increase), but sales of medium SUVs are up 12.4% and large ones 7.7%.
Could it be that the anti-SUV campaign a couple of years ago lead manufacturers to reduce manufacturing targets, and they've been caught on the hop now that the market is returning to normal? Read more
<< As for the state of UK roads, apart from speed humps I have seen no 1 meter deep holes as they have in the US.. But of course I live north of Watford so am stupid...as most of those holes are South of Watford.. They must be judging by the number of large 4x4s in London.. where they have to battle through 2 metre snowdrifts in winter to commute to work...>>
.Most of these SUV enthusiasts seem to live in a suburb of London called "Denial". When will they admit to us and themselves that these awful vehicles are ugly, uncomfortable, and thirsty? Not to mention their compromised dynamics.I cannot believe that anyone who enjoys driving would buy one....
Here is tricky one, I hope that LucyBC can help me out. My daughter recently had a hire car from her employer whilst waiting for her new car to arrive. The car, a Vauxhall Insignia developed a cracked windscreen, When and how we don't know, she only noticed it when my wife pointed it out. Anyway, the car went off hire and she collected her new car. 4 weeks after this she decided to leave. Her employer deducted over £500 from her final salary to pay for 'damage and valeting' of the hire car. The damage was unspecified. She accepts that the car may have needed a valet because she has a dog, but apart from that she states the car was in the same condition as when she received it, the cracked screen may have been present then, we don't know. Surely a windscreen is covered by insurance? Despite several requests for documentation and or photographs to substantiate their claim she has been ignored. Surely a car hire company would document and usually photograph any damage to the value of £500. I think the employer is being b***** minded because she left. Today we sent a recorded delivery letter requesting the information within 14 days, very politely, no threats. But what do we do, if as I suspect he just ignores us? Any sensible suggestion please. I would argue that responsibility would have to be expressly written into the terms and conditions and what is more that the driver would probably have to be at fault or negligent in some way.
