In March of this year I purchased a one owner Mondeo Ghia V6 Auto with 22500 miles on the clock from a local Ford main dealer plus a "Ford Protect" extended 2 year warranty. I became concerned at the lack of power when climbing hills and returned the vehicle to the dealer for check in June. I was informed that no problem could be found. The performance has since worsened and upon returning the car again on 28 July I was subsequently advised that all 3 catalytic converters are blocked and that the repairs are not covered by the warranty. The bill for repairs, including labour, will be about £1700 but the dealer has offered to reduce this by 50%. I appreciate the offer but had thought that any faults found within 6 months should be fixed free of charge. The dealer says that they will only do this within the first 3 months. Should I accept the 50% offer or argue for more and if so on what basis? Read more

Thanks. The car is 7 years old and I have done about 4000 miles since I bought it. Does this affect your overall view?

I changed the battery recently on my 2001 Sharan and noticed shortly afterwards that the Aircon was not working. It was a hot day and we tried switching the aircon on but didn't get any cold air. Later I noticed that when the ignition was switched on the climate control panel flashed for about 15 seconds, which the car book says indicates a malfunction. The car has not been used much for the past two years, often sitting in the garage all week and sometime for two weeks. Even when the car was used Aircon was not always on. Aircon had never given any trouble before, having had the car from new. Checked all the fuses which had an aircon sign against them and they were all ok. Tested the two gas filler points and gas hissed out. Have been running the car for the past 300 miles or so with the air con switched off. Ran the engine yesterday to warm it up to change the oil and got some burning smell from the left side of the engine (where the pumps/ drivebelt are. Couldn't see any obvious fault when I inspected the aircon components from under the car. Any help to diagnose and repair would be appreciated. Read more

No practical advice for the poster, but this problem simply re-inforces the false economy of not running the A/C system. All stems back 20 years or more when A/C was only found on luxury motors, and your dad would tell you that it increased the mpg by 10% or more.

Modern systems use nothing like as much power, and they prefer to be in constant use rather than left off for weeks at a time. The repair costs of an under used system will far exceed the cost of leaving them switched on....

Hi, I get a rattle on the front drivers side when the engine runs at 1000 to 1200 revs then it goes away. It only happens at those revs not higher or lower. There is no rattle when idling of at higher revs. Any ideas on this.

Thanks. Read more

Hi
Car is a 1999 V Reg scenic RT 1600 Petrol.
Problem is usual as in car was stopped then when tried to start, nothing. Occasionally tries to start, will fire then cuts out. Have checked for spark but nothing there, have changed TDC sensor for new but no different.
Immobileser light does not go out when unlocking with key fob and when you turn ignition on, the speed of the flash increases. Have spent most of the afternoon reading numerous articles which seem to relate to IR Fobs, mine is a RF Fob. Tried using the C/L buttton on the dash to slow it down but no effect thinking could maybe get the Immob code(not sure where as no code inside key fob) and enter manually.
So now sat here scratching my head on a Sunday evening wondering what next, so any help would be gratefully received.

If the engine briefly runs and then stops as you describe, it seems like the immobiliser is in operation. If you are inside the vehicle and the immobiliser is set through inactivity, you need 2 clicks of the button to "open" it so that the red light is on constantly and starting can proceed. If the red light is flashing, the immobiliser is set and you are out of sequence (by one click). You therefore need to do one more click to get the red light on constantly .

My long accident free period ran out a few weeks back. I was side swiped by a Hungarian registered artic. Prevailing heavy traffic conditions had trapped me in his blind spot as he pulled out to overtake a slow moving vehicle. We stopped and exchanged details as best we could (he spoke no English). I rang my insurers when I got home to report the incident. They stated that whilst most continental lorries operating in this country deal with insurance claims through some sort of claims handling register, the haulage company concerned is not recorded and in that case they (my insurers) will have to contact them in Hungary in order to pursue a claim.

I was told that if the haulage company deny liability or don’t respond, my claim if I went ahead would be treated as my fault and affect future premiums. I have had a local body shop assess the damage which amounts to around £1500. Luckily, the damage is all cosmetic and the vehicle is perfectly driveable, however it’s a 2002 vehicle with 180k on the clock, albeit in good working order and prior to this damage, in good condition.... These models are not the most reliable car ever made - I'd never buy one - sell it while you can.
