Planned to do the oil change plus filter on my Carina E that I bought in February this morning. It started well enough with the Pela pump removing 3 litres of used oil.

The car had always been serviced at a Toyota main dealer and I did wonder how tight they put the filter on - they put it on VERY tight in fact!! Tried to get it off just wearing latex gloves which have a fair grip but that didn't work. Then a neighbour lent me his old leather strap filter wrench, that was hopeless in fact!... Read more

The "trick" was to use a very thick screwdriver - thin ones could often slice through the filter body if it was too tight.

If you're in the UK it could be due to the camber of the road. This pulls the car a little to the left and so you have to steer a little to the right.

Try swapping wheels from one side to the other (as long as the tyres aren't directional).

Hello,

i am in the proccess of buying a used vehicle and i would like your advice!I am between a 2004 Nissan Almera 1.8 (gasoline powered 4 speed automatic with 55.000 Km on the clock and price 6.300 Euros) and a Toyota Prius (any year between 2005 and 2009 and price from 12.000 to 15.000 Euros). The Almera has very good reliability ratings, but,on the other hand,is quite expensive on fuel (i think that this is the case, since it is a 4 speed torque converter automatic fitted to a 1.8 liter engine) and tax (here...in Greece... gasoline has a price of -approximately-1.50 Euros per liter (and it is predicted that its price will rise even more),the annual tax of a 2004 conventional car with a 1.8 liter engine is 252 Euros (this is the data for 2010,as nobody knows what its going to happen the following year...),plus if you buy a car-even a used one-you must pay another tax for having the car registered in your name etc etc... I don't know what the recommended ATF and change interval is for the Almera, but you could ring your nearest Nissan dealer and ask them; that's what I would do.

The manufacturing output figures of all the car makes have just been released in Germany and all companies have reduced sales but Opel have the worst at nearly 40% down overall. There are talks and I repeat talks only of them closing plants knowing how strong the union IGmetal is in Germany it will not be a German plant that closes I suppose you have to watch this space but if I was employed in the UK by Opel I would be a little worried. Sorry to any Vauxhall fans out there, but this doesn't surprise me. There just aren't enough good reasons to buy one, and I haven't in 40 years of owning cars....

Must admit, I've never driven either a mini or a convertible. Partly due to only owning one car at a time, which had to be a practical proposition.

Have I missed anything in driving neither? Read more

Personally I don't think you're missing anything re the convertible.

I've recently bought an MX5 as a weekend/summer car and prefer driving with the roof up and the windows down. ...
