Looked over an old (think it may have been N reg) Corsa the other day and I noticed the water level when just started from cold was not visible in the header tank. When the engine was turned off (hot by this time) the level was visible at the cold level on the tank. In view of the cars age I walked away thinking it must be using / leaking water. The person I was checking the car for spoke to the main dealer (not connected with the car) and was told "oh yes they all do that it is a quirk of that model". They then went back and purchased the car. Is it a quirk of this car? I,m more inclined to think after reading this site its more likely to be a heater matrix / waterpump / head gasket etc what do you think? Read more

Vauxhalls should stay pretty much round the centre. Not normal and not a quirk. Could be something or nothing, a bad head gasket (very common on Vauxhall) or a bad thermostat (which aren't as cheap as they should be either).

I'd suspect it had an expensive problem as the dealer would have sorted it otherwise.

An uncle of mine had a couple of them and would somtimes let me drive tha last one he had. I found it pretty disapointing, heavy steering and not that quick. Of course this was at the end oh the 60s when there were really nice smallish quick saloons comeing from BMW with the 1600/2002 and Ford with the Cortina/Escort twin cams.

I do remember that Seans Mk 2s did seem to take a lot of mainainance, reminded me of the saying that the Jag was and expensive car built cheaply....

Feel a bit stupid posting. Made a big mistake at the weekend and topped up my engine with mineral oil. As I was going on long journey and oil level was begining to drop. Next service is soon due. I topped up with 0.5L of mineral oil as this all that they had in the filling station. Then when I had drove about 40 miles the yellow oil light came on! I was worried now so took a chance and poured in the rest of the oil (0.5L)and drove 10 miles and then got some synthic oil. Kept a watchful eye for the rest of the journey and everything was fine. All was fine on the return journey. Then the next day when I was washing the car I noticed that there was an oily residue on the boot. I then looked under the car and noticed a lot of oil! I brought it to a mechanic and he took off the sump cover but there didnt seem to be any issue. He cleaned as best he could and there was no visible signs of any leak.

He suspects that it might just be a case that the minerial oil came out as he said the stuff is like water when hot. I am a bit worried now and hope that I havent done any permenant damage. He said to drive for rest of week and keep an eye on the oil level, which looks to be fine. He will service at the weekend, new oil and filter.Car is running fine.... Read more

as others have said - a top-up of decent mineral oil should have no ill effects whatsoever. If you're worried, change the lot, but I wouldn't be.

I would suggest that your oily residue is most likely evidence of a minor leak which caused the level to drop to start off with....

TXT spk grinds on the nerves a little when you have memories of sitting in classrooms with ink pots and using the next step up from the bird fearher quill. You might just remember those little wooden pen shafts and asking for a new nib - which you then pushed onto the end of the mini pit prop - and dipped it into the reconstituted powdered ink - mixed with water - in that little ceramic inkpot set into the hole at the right top of your desk.

The desk with the pre WW1 initials of former sufferers - the brooding presence of the Master with his ready to throw blackboard rubber and the banning of the newly introduced biro - it being considered decadent and a potential inducer of corruption as to the formation of writing - even to the extent of degrading the actual letters.... Like anything else, there's good and bad in modern education. Yes, we need the discipline so that every child gets to achieve as muchg as their potential: but we don't need (except at the elementary levels of a subject) the rote-learning that destroys creativity and lateral thinking.

I recruit graduates and I have a constant gripe against universities which allow students to learn / regurgitate / get a 2.1. It's not all the students' fault - most start at university at a fairly immature 18 - but as employers we need the ability to think round a problem and (in my case, recruiting auditors) to understand risk and the human nature that causes risk.

I have read the previous posts about immobiliser problems and dash circuit boards going on these models. MerlinTec, Simon, has provided spot on expert advice on many occasions - perhaps someone with his know how can advise me on my predicament.

The battery went flat over Christmas and a lot of condensation accumalated inside the car. When I tried to start it up using jump leads it seemed like there was smoke coming out of the vents. After that i could drive it but the dials were not working, eventually they came back on there own, but were erratic at times. After a few days I had to jump start it again and this time the engine turned over but was very 'lumpy' perhaps misfiring and under powered. It drove like this for about 20 miles, then when I switched off the engine it wouldnt start again.... Read more

I'm been searching the internet looking for an answer to this, but so far without a conclusive answer.

I'm off to the states soon and have an E-Class E55 lined up to drive when I get there thanks to a pal of mine. The only problem is that I've just found out that I'll be transporting some art in long tubes which won't fit in the boot.... Read more

As above, sounds like your thermostat is knackered. Get it changed. If doing it yourself, you may find access a bit tricky removing the allen bolts to the thermostat housing. Also, you may end up cracking the housing as they can become brittle.

With regards to coolant, you should be using G12+ or G12++. G12+ is pink and is available from German Swedish & French (GSF). G12++ is available from VW and I think is purple in colour. ...

Just bought a 2003 Merc C270 and love it to bits except for the very poor performing radio in the A10 radio/cassette. In my little area of Cornwall it loses reception very easily despite RDS and I know longer have any cassettes I can play.

Does anyone know if it is possible to fit a A10 radio/Cd unit without any loss of function from the steering wheel unit?... Read more
