I need to replace a drop link on my 2001 focus. It has aluminium drop links fitted. For not much more than the cost of one aluminium link, I could get a pair of steel ones and replace them both. Are there any reasons why I shouldn't do this? What are the advantages / disadvantages of aluminium Vs steel links? Read more

After 3 years of well maintained, troublefree motoring, one day she stopped.

Reversing up my drive, which has a 20 degree incline, she cut out. Thinking I was too low on fuel, I put 5 litres in to show quarter full, but she has not started since and the battery died from trying. I have put a new battery in, and now she wont even turnover. Just goes clunck when I turn the ignition key, and all dash lights go out. Noticing that the Hydraulic pressure warning light stays on, and the STOP command light stays on, after I turn the ignition on and enter my security code, I check the fluid level, and the yellow disc is right at the top of the glass. So I top the fluid up nearly to the top of the reservoir, but the yellow disc does not move at all. and she still does not even try to start.... Read more

Bought new in 1985 - did 28,000 miles in one year under my ownership and then sold as a favour at below trade price to my Father who had a 10yr old Mk2 Escort - the floor of which had virtually rotted off.

I nodded sagely at that - because the Polo followed two basic Fiesta`s - of which I may write later.... Read more

After ongoing issues with my car and the dreaded flashing glow plug light, the diesel specialist garage has said that it is the boost pressure wastegate which is the problem. They have said that they cant be bought seperately and Ford will only sell it alongside a new Turbo unit for £1000. Is there anywhere where these can be obtained? Read more

There are plenty of people on ebay offering good deals on turbo units. To clean the EGR you must remove it and chip all the carbon of it takes about an hour easy job,Its situated on the front left jand side of the engine at the top.

I have a fiat brava 1.4 (97) When I was driving the gears suddenly refused to go into first or second. The clutch pedal went very heavy. Any ideas as to what it could be. The master cylinder and slave cylinder are not leaking. Read more

If you can engage the gears without the engine running sounds as though the clutch has gone faulty.

Suggestions from within the motor trade that a certain manufacturer is carrying out audits and financially penalising dealers who innocently point out to customers any defects they have come accross during routine maintenance and inspection.

This is very alarming as the vehicles are still under warranty but the manufacturer,it would appear, are acting with total disregard to their customers and are putting lives at risk by discouraging dealers from highlighting potential flaws and defective components.... Read more

The garage would have a duty of car to indicate any defects they spotted which may pose a safety risk. Were they to be financially penalised for doing so by association with a delaership then it would be a matter for Trading Standards and may be subject to competition legislation. I would be interested in more details.
