'Backroom' Forum Suggestions, not 'Website' Suggestions
Just seen the sticky thread about the website upgrade
www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?f=2&t=83...9
There's an invite for a laundry list of features, guessing that means if we drop off our requests there might be scope for the developers to add in some features? Here goes :-P
* Threaded interface for posts.
* Update the Swear filter to detect all caps posts, save poor DD having to fix the posts.
* User reputation / thank you / karma points system -- would be nice to be able to say thanks to some of the posters on here and have them gain an elevated status
* Picture hosting
* BB Board style formating, keep it simple though (bold, italics, underline is prob enough, no size changes)
* Improved quoting of posts, when i quote another user, visually distinguish this better, also mention who im quoting
* Subscribe to threads feature, with optional email notifications
* RSS feeds for each forum, with new topics (p.s. feel free to include an advert in the RSS feed item, but ensure you list the full first post not jsut a snippet of it)
Wow, that turned out bigger than i thought lol just some ideas.

My wife's car is playing up (again). The engine warning light it on continuously and the fan stays on once the car has warmed up. I've checked the oil and water levels and they are OK. I've also felt the rad hoses - the top one is hot and bottom one is cold. If its something as simple as the thermostat sticking closed- would this cause the engine warning light to illuminate?? Does anyone know if my guess is right?? or are there 2 separate issues with the car?? Read more
i've got an intermittent electrical prob with my 306 GLX 1.6 petrol:
ignition will fire up, the dash lights up as usual, as i go to turn the engine over, 3/10 times it will cut out all the electrics and kill everything
eventually the power will come back, popping the hood seems to reset something, but its not exactly consistent - at this point, sometimes it will then start properly, but most of the time the same thing happens again.
i've not had a case where i couldn't get it started yet, and it goes for spells where it doesn't happen at all.. but its happening more regularly than i would like..!
is this pointing to a loose earth wire? i've just had the clutch/gearbox replaced.. anyone had this before? Read more
Ok, I'll start a seperate topic... as I've said I have grave doubts about the increased use of these things, especially from their possible (probable) misuse...
We all complain about the number of CCTV cameras in public places but their use is strictly registered and controlled whereas this development is a total free-for-all...
Personally, unless there are strict controls on their use I'm against them. Read more
It seems many people don't like the idea of cameras, yet can offer no >> sane and rational or logical explanation as to why.
I don't like cameras pointed at me because I'm not photogenic!

I quite fancied a W124 estate on Ebay - until I saw that it had 16 previous owners, so the next owner will be owner no. 18!
I'm not so keen now! Read more
Years ago I bought a MK2 Escort with 13 previous owners. It was pretty rough but I couldn't resist the 2.0 Pinto engine conversion it had. One morning at 2am I was woken up by something, looked out of the window and saw a couple of cretins breaking in to my car. They were making so much noise trying to keep their Metro from stalling they must have woke half the neighbourhood up. I couldn't really shout "Oi! What the 'ell do you think you're doing?", because I lived seven floors up in a high rise (taking about 2 minutes to run down seven flights of stairs), so I phoned the police. I had the great experience of watching the police car roaring down the road after them from my vantage point.
They managed to retrieve the car, minus it's passengers, with the engine still running. The police rang me up and said "Sorry sir, but's it's running a bit rough". I went to collect it, and found it drove as normal as could be expected.
I was the 14th and last lucky owner, as I scrapped the poor thing. Happy days.
I think I should get a battery charger for my Toyota Hiace camper van, but am unsure what sort to get.
I succeeded in flattening the battery last week after taking it out for some exercise. The weather got a bit foggy, so I switched on the foglights, and it seems that I forgot to turn them off when I got out. (The Japanese don't seem to use rear foglights, so my rear fog one was fitted in the UK to allow registration here, because the DVLA won't register the vehicle without them. Unfortunately, as a retro-fit job, it's not linked into the lights-still-on warning system.)
My homestart service got me going again, but since I'm hopefully moving soon to a remote area, I thought that it would be a good idea to get a battery charger of my own.
But when I went shopping, it turns out that choosing a battery charger is not, as I expected, simply a matter of finding a good price on something well-made. There seem to be lots of them for different purposes.
Screwfix has several in its catalogue, but this one url.ie/53mo says it is only for petrol engines up to 1300cc, and url.ie/53mq this one is for petrol enines up to 1800cc. They do have one at url.ie/53ms which states no limits, but it costs over £120. Ouch.
The Hiace has a 3-litre turbo-diesel engine (same engine as a Landcruiser, I'm told), and to start this monster it has two big 12V batteries wired in parallel. However, I don't see why the size of the engine should matter to the charger; I would have thought that lower-amperage charger would just take longer to do the job.
After searching the forum I found some threads on battery chargers which explained that some of the newer chargers have clever circuitry which helps maintain a trickle charge and so on, but I found nothing about this engine size stuff.
Any suggestions on whether I could get something modestly-priced which would allow me to charge up the batteries on this monster engine?
I don't mind if it's a bit slow, but I would like something which I could also use on my car (1800cc Nissan Almera). (BTW, I do have a mains hook-up for the van's leisure battery, but that doesn't charge the engine-battery, so it's a separate issue, and not a problem).

Pity you didn't ask a month ago NW, Lidl were doing one of their promotions on smart chargers at a bargain £13.99.
I bought one as a spare/back up for the CTEK 3600 i bought following some very good advice here, the Lidl one seems to be virtually the same as the CTEK (though looks different) having identical lights/switching and both work a treat.
Might be worth a look in at a couple of Lidl's in case they have any left.
Righto, i bought the 3600 (didn't realise just how behind the times i was with my previous stone age charger) because it's capable of charging up to 120AH battery, the beauty of these smart chargers is that you don't need to disconnect the battery and can leave them on for months at a time if you want.
If you go on to CTEK's website it will tell you what capacity battery each model will handle.
I imagine it would be a good idea to disconnect 1 battery from the other and let them have a few days charging individually...no doubt someone will say if thats not a good idea, that will also mean you could use a similar capacity charger to the 3600/Lidl's one whereas if you leave both connected together you may need a larger capacity charger, i seem to remember my twin batteried Landcruiser had 2x75/80AH batteries.
I've got a 1999 mondeo Ghia X 2.5 auto.
If it's in park and you rev it quite strongly (+4k) the revs drop then pick-up againt (as though you were repeatedly pressing accelerator and taking you foot off).
Is this normal ? Is there some kind of cut-out programme for high revs when stationary ?

Yes there is a strange bug the site developer is aware of. But thanks for highlighting it just in case.
