Hi All,
Once again, looking for some advice......what do i need to do to get my daughters car changed from using the key manually for locking/unlocking and to change to remote entry.
We have the 2 keys (blue tip, non remote) so would it be as simple as buying the remotes and getting new blades cut then re-programming? How difficult to programme....can i do it myself?

many thanks Read more

I'm in the market for a car and have just seen a 1.6 V40 that looks interesting... I've read a few horror stories about the GDI engines that are in some of these V40s and am wondering if the 1.6 is such a beast. The seller wasn't sure... Anyone know? Read more

The GDi (Gasoline direct injection) was only available in 1.8 form and was shared with the Mitsubishi Carisma of the same era, it ran a very lean mixture which was great when the engine was new but when carbon deposits built up in the throttle body it caused erratic idle and stalling problems, not a great engine. The 1.6 is a sweet enough engine but a little underpowered in a car the size/weight of a V40.

Reading through NickS's thread "When does a car "wear out"?", some people have replied (notably madf) to the effect that they would "not buy a car from a manufacturer with consistent design or quality problems.. which means never buying a new model until it has had 4 years road experience to show faults". Car makers singled out to avoid include Mercedes (because of the current injector issues), Vauxhall, Renault and Mazda diesels.

What cars are the polar opposite of these? In other words, which cars would Backroomers buy in the reasonable expectation that they would last a good few years and not cost a great deal to keep on the road? If any cars like that exist, of course...

The early Mk2 Accents were pretty terrible. They had issues with electrics and clutches -- although the 1.3is were usually fault-free because they were indeed very basic.

I had one and the engine was tough -- ran it for 80K. But the clutch was carp.

Here is the source of the chassis number story:

Apparently a car in a Japanese collection has the same number.

Changed the heading to Merseyside but unfortunately it doesn't ripple to all posts. At least it will look right in the front screen.

Toyota, with their recalls, BMW, Ford and many others are getting bad press and comments from many. How about some positives for a change? My old CLK has done 40k for me in 2.5 years and is approaching 120k. It's had normal servicing from an indie and apart from discs and pads has been good as gold. Its seems cars are like Caesar with the bad remembered and the good forgotten.
Looking back over 35 years motoring there has not been too much to complain about. A Mirafiori rusted away but was great to drive, a Viva blew an engine but it had done mega miles and a wheel came off a Datsun, apart from that cars have been pretty good. A Volvo 240 had an engine go too but that swmbo had come home saying this light had been lit on the dash all day but she thought it was nothing....................... Read more

My 5 year old 1.8 British built (I had to get that in) Almera has been a diamond of a car since I have owned it - better than the Mrk 1 1600 Zetec Focus I had before in fact.
I must admit I didn't know it was British built when I bought it though, I went for it because it was a Nissan.
I would normally have changed the car by now, but why should I change it just for the sake of it :)
