Doesn't take rocket science does it.
Well to be fair the law only came into force on 1st January - not an excuse though.

Does the old adage "ignorance of the law is no plea" still apply?
Gave me a smile.

That link says "Merseyside" police, what's Manchester got to do with it?

1. Merseyside, not GMP.
2. "The police force has had the drone since November and has said it could be used for a range of uses, from hostage situations to monitoring large public events. Last week, officers said thermal images provided by the force's drone led it to the first arrest it had been involved with. " It doesn't sound very effective, then, if this is its first arrest after 3 months.
3. "Good"???!!! So that the police force will be fined by the CAA. What good does it do for one target-driven public-funded body to fine another target-driven public-funded body. It's just creating employment at taxpayers' expense. Quite nuts.

I'd say it's "good" as it teaches the police they are subject to the same laws that they enforce. Yes, in a way it's shuffling money from one place to another, but at least they know they can't get away with things just because they're the police.

I think it is a case of not evaluating technology properly (logistics, legal aspects etc) and poor management decisions.
but hey it is the UK after all, it's not like our MP's have been on the take......
Yes no doubt we all will end up footing the bill for any fine the police get, but at least its not being squandered away on yet more bad management decisions.

£40k?!
diydrones.com/
Change out of £600 more like...
Always fancied a wee shot at doing some FPV flying, although on something a bit more agile than a quad copter which isn't much better than an rc blimp (v slow to move around)...
youtube for "easystar fpv" -- about £500 all in to get everything needed including head tracking (camera on the remote plane moves where you look whilst wearing the headset).
In some R/C circles there's been talk of interfering with the police drones... posted on public websites for all to see as well!
|
£40k?!
Cheaper than a helicopter? Presumably a lot less to run, which I would have thought was a good thing, assuming it's used as a replacement.
|
Actually, it was Merseyside Police, not Manchester.
Saw it on Look North West at lunch-time.
|
Is it not possible that the Manchester heat have called on this facility from Merseyside in pursuit of their vendetta with a backroom member (no names, no packdrill) who recently - allegedly inadvertently - committed a technical assault on a Manchester constable using a lethal weapon, to whit his father's car, and a natural phenomenon, to whit a 'quite small puddle of rainwater'?
These drones are invaluable of course for discreet surveillance, but I believe they can also be equipped to deliver a small guided missile, perhaps loaded with sinister chemical agents.

Changed the heading to Merseyside but unfortunately it doesn't ripple to all posts. At least it will look right in the front screen.
