A recent change in job required me to spend 3 hours on road each day! (mostly M1 + A406)

Now I'm wondering how to make the journey intersting and do something useful while I'm on car.

So far I have tried listening to music but all my music collection exhausted.

Tried radio channels - got bored listening same songs and same news over & over again!

Tried audio books, but sometimes lost track what happens in the story while concentrating on roads.

Any other ideas??

PS: In case you suggest using train instead, I discarded the idea as it was more expensive in train and overall journey time remains unchanged. Read more

I'm surprised that no-one's mentioned the most enjoyable(and time-saving) way of making your commute more interesting.

I've stuck my head above the parapet to post this and hope I won't be misunderstood.
I really am imterested in the backroomers opinions on this one because it's provoked so many unusual reactions from fellow lorry drivers.
We all, without fail realise his guilt and realise this has to be punished.
We all, also without fail, have said 'there but for the grace of God go I'
Who can honestly say they have never driven with something weighing heavily on their minds?
Questions have been pondered on whether the firm should have been employing someone of that age under the corporate manslaughter risks these days, and the current duty of care restrictions.
Fifteen hour shifts are long and tiring for much younger drivers and obviously would be more so, for a 74 yrs old.
Is a custodial sentence the right one?
I have very mixed feelings, what do the backroomers think?
Please don't shoot the messenger.

I agree with that - people are punished based on the consequences which are pretty
random.

I always find it strange that there is such a big difference between the actual penalties dealt out for murder and attempted murder...when the only difference is how good a shot you are...

A friend wants to buy a used diesel estate car, circa 2006 with about 50k on the clock. He wants something reasonably comfortable with a few toys. For obvious reasons there are some very good SAAB 93 bargains going about. It would probably be the 1.9tdi(150) version. We would be very interested in everyone?s opinions on such a purchase. I had a 93 saloon with this engine for 3 years and 70k miles. It is noisy when cold and the first gear change from 1st to 2nd when cold sounds like the gearbox is falling out. However, once warm it is a strong, flexible and lusty unit that returned me high 40s MPG. I had the Euro CAT3 version of the car.

A year on and I have a 2004 2 litre petrol Legacy via a brand new 1.8 Turbo Petrol A3. I miss the Saab for the performance and fuel economy, but the Subaru (a year older with the same mileage) is so much better screwed together. The rattle on the Saab that was starting to come from behind the speedo plus the rattly front shocks were the tipping point.

I would have another one, but the price would have to be Vectra money.

Any advice is appreciated.
I own a 2001 Santa-Fe 2l petrol in v good condition. I have been trying to sell or swap for a few months because of the high fuel costs.
I now have the chance to swap with a 2002 Citroen Picasso 1.6l petrol, its also in v good condition. I will also recieve ?500 in cash.
Generally do users think this is a good deal for me ?
Will I make decent savings in the fuel costs ?
Thankyou for taking the time to read :) Read more

...I've been driving a Picasso a bit this week...

'Nice to ride in, not nice to drive,' is my verdict based on limited experience.

Hi,

I was having problems getting my car to start a few weeks ago and it turned out that the battery was to blame, so I had a new one fitted. The car runs fine, but I tried using the trip computer for the first time since having the new battery fitted and it no longer works. The readout will only display the current mileage and pushing the button in the dashboard doesn't do anything.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be? Would having a new battery fitted possibly have caused this, or is it just a coincidence?

Many thanks,

Steve. Read more

Thanks for the advice mate. I tried disconnecting the battery for 20 minutes, but unfortunately it didn't solve the problem. Any other ideas? Is there a fuse anywhere that's related to the trip computer that might have blown?

I bought the tool for changing the cambelt for my 2005 saab tid 150bhp, used autodata outline, lined marks up on pulleys to belt, locked up cam, locked up crank. But it wont start, it almost offers then slows right up, had battery charged and jump leads onto the battery, had starter off and tested and put back on. Read more

Bought some of this stuff from faster onlinefor my passat 2006 140tdi. Have used twice in 2 tank fulls at double dose as instructions allow. I am now getting a headache whilst driving the car. I am a taxi driver and spend up to 10hrs per day driving which results in a thumping head at the end of the day. Any ideas what this stuff has done to my car.

p.s. The exhaust is fine with no leaks. This has only started since using millers diesel sport 4. I have stopped using it after the two tankfulls and have since done 3000k but the headache's remain. Any ideas please!!! Read more

Wish it was. Used the stuff on my last car a 2003 peugeot 406 2.0hdi. Same story. Ended up trading peugeot in for passat. Result no headaches for a year but being stupid thought i'd give it another go seeing as i still had 2.5lts left of 5ltr container. It's done something just don't no what.

My ABS warning light is on and this has contributed to my failed MOT. The garage says it requires a new ABS pump (a new one is 1042, the car is proably worth 1300!!). Can I get a second hand one and can anyone reccomend where from and who would be willing to fit one in the Cheshire area?? Any idea what this would cost? Read more

Get them to remove the unit from the car and send it to the people I have suggested. They usually do a 48hr turn around service.hth

Guys,

I have to do a few conferences the week after next, starting in Scotland and working my way down/across the country. I won't be able to fit all my gear in my car so will get my company to hire a Transit sized van. The thing is normally my company reimburse business miles at 13p a mile and I'd be surprised that will cover the fuel usage of a van of this size (I'll be doing circa 1,500 miles).

I want to broach the subject now to manage expectations before I put my total fuel claim in but would like an idea of what MPG to expect on the motorway. Not flat out, just going with the flow at 70/75MPH. The goods won't be heavy, just bulky.

I'm hopeful of 30-35MPG based on the fact my old S-Max would get 45-48MPG at those speeds.

Thanks Read more

My wife has been on at me about getting a bigger car, which goes against my better instinct really, but I said id give it some thought.

The car ive come up with is a Camry 2.2 estate. Even HJ doesnt seem to have much bad to say about them. It seems impossibly well regarded - I know a guy who ran a V6 for 200k and he said despite BMWs, Mercs and the like which came later, it was his Camry that he missed the most.

So, is it crazy to buy one, putting aside the condition of an individual car ( I wouldnt look at anything that didnt have a file of receipts and was well looked after )?

Anyone here driven a 2.2 manual?

Im just mulling it over atm, but with small car prices very firm ( I was offered £2k for my Charade the other day and looking around that was on the money ) it seems its not a bad time - ive only lost £1200 on it over 25k which isnt too bad at all really.
I also have a secret hankering for a 240 Volvo, but thats another thing again! Read more

Proof that a few good cars are out there still for sure, its barely run in! Shame most of the surviving ones are V6, but then the market is quiet atm so AT is looking a bit thin all over. Prob why prices are high.
