Everytime i start my car from cold there is a strange noise that lasts between 15 and 30 seconds. It sounds like interference from the radio and gets louder as you rev the engine. The radio is switched off and the facia on front of radio is also removed. Any suggestions ?? Read more

HI, I have just had my 53 honda civic 1.6 inspire broken into (scum) they did not open the door so the alarm did not go off. I want to put some sensors inside the car that will pick up movement. Hopefully I can plug them straight into the alarm? Only thing is the honda garage will not tell me where the alarm is situated in the car. its not as if I am going to nick one (hell i was in the car when I asked). So can anyone tell me where to find the alarm so I can see if I can fit sensors myself? Thank you, Barry.

free is always best (so good i said it twice by accident but its staying now)
somebody will obviously say that the amps per hour is all wrong and you will be stranded in a carp park in north orpington on a wet sunday tea time but we both know you hate north orpington so you will be ok

I'd say £650 might be a wee bit low but not much. The key thing is to have nerves of steel that if anything goes wrong with it you will have to walk away from it. I found to my cost with a 96 2.8 A6 that they can be moneypits.

I'm not going to bang on about the wrongs of people who misfuel diesels with petrol. Mishaps happen and the deed is done. When you go to the till the cashier usually confirms the pump and the amount. Why can't they also state type of fuel. Some may already do this, but many don't.
The advice over many years on here from experienced posters is that you should never start up once misfuelling has been done. But the numpty that has, would usually be oblivious until turning the key. Too late. That's why I think a gentle reality check from the cashier, might give enough of a warning not to. The word "petrol" might pop the mental bubble they filled up with. It won't stop misfuelling, but it could prevent hefty bills if the vehicle is started. Changing nozzles and fillers will take ages. How about an automated system with a little loudspeaker on the pump ..

The Nissan garage in Widnes had pumps which did just that for many years - maybe they still do. It may have prevented the problem under discussion many times.

My exteremely well built e34 520i has developed a very annoying rattle at the right hand side of the instrument panel at 70 mph or 2850 revs. It must be speed related because if I rev the car to this while stationary no such vibration occurs. I am thinking something to do with the speedo head except its on the other side. Most perplexing. Read more

My car broke down due to the clutch plates being burn out. When the local garage looked at it, they say that there is a pin gone in the gear box and the whole thing will have to be replaced. This is beyond economical repair and the best thing is to scrap the car and buy a replacement. They have offered me about £200 for it. They also want to charge me for the work they had aleady done to replace the clutch plates.
Is this fair? Do I have any comeback? The car is undriveable, so I can't move it to another garage, to get a second opinion. I could look for a secondhand gear box on the internet, but the garage seem reluctant to do the work, due to cost. Is this correct? Read more

it is possible as u have a vw. if the gearbox is type DUU the diff pins are prone to breaking. google duu gearboxes.

Picked a brand new Fabia 2 - 1.2L 70bhp on Wednesday - 9 miles on the clock. During handover, usual questions - "Have fluids been checked?" - Yes sir, definitely. So accept the car - drive home 40 miles - stick to own running in rules (under 55mph - 3000 rpm max) - everthing fine.

Sat morning, now 150 miles on the clock, on a whim decide to check the engine oil level (cold before first start) .

WHAT? ENGINE OIL BELOW MINIMUM MARK! - actually on the bottom bend situated about 5mm below the hatched area (the area the oil should be in) Several careful rechecks later, i.e. level ground, engine cold then warm, stood few a minutes etc. - the same result.

Phonecall to dealer - cant help until Monday as service dept closed but said the PDI should have checked it and cant understand whats happened. In the end I added about 0.7 litres just to get it to the halfway mark.

No evidence of leaks or oil being burned - engine is running sweet etc

Has anyone ever experienced an underfilled engine straight from the factory? I doubt that over 1 litre in less than 150 miles could be burnt off without seeing something.

And should I be worried about gearbox levels etc.?

I have a bit of a problem, I can't check the Auto gearbox fluid on my Mk4 Mondeo, there's no dipstick. Apparently it has to be checked by the dealers. The Mk3 was the same and the only way to change the fluid DIY was to empty the old fluid out, retain it and measure it and put the same amount back in. So my dilema now, after reading this post, is how do I know if there was the correct amount in from the start ?
BTW the car is running fine, so I won't lose any sleep over it ;0)
FTR, what happens if you overfill an auto box, does it just leak out of seals etc. or does it do more permanent damage ?

Went out today with a Polo 1.2 2006, full service history, 49k to try to do a deal for a different model with the idea of ours and £6000 on top for the new one. The Polo is ok with pearl paint but I was taken aback with a main dealer offering me £1500 for it. Salesman seemed surprised when I politely declined. Read more

Nowadays if someone offers me those kind of p/x offer, I counter offer them that if they can find a similar car even with 10% more (for their profit) I'm willing to buy it right now for my friend. Then they usually try to divert the topic.
