Well, I've replaced all 4 Dunlops with Pirelli P7s and I'm really pleased with them. They're much quieter and the ride/grip feels better. And I got a good deal I think at £401 all in for 4 X 215/55/16 V 97W (extra load), I thought it'd be nearer £500. I'm now waiting for someone to tell me I paid too much and could have got them for £1.50 at www.cheapotyres.com or some such! :))

So thanks for the recommendation from someone on this forum (can't remember who).

Thanks, quizman. Good call! I can't believe how much better they feel.

I was driving home this evening and the engine check light came on. A bit scary as I was in the outside lane of the M5 at the time. Managed to pull over to the hard shoulder though.

The engine would not rev over 3,000 but otherwise seemed fine.

I limped onto the next junction and pulled off the motorway. Switching off the engine seems to have 'reset' things and the car is driving normally, however the engine check light is stil on.

I guess this is because a fault has been flagged and it needs to be reset?

My BiL works for a garage and he will check it for me on Thursday. In the mean time am I OK to drive around? Read more

After the car has been idleing for 1 minute it cuts out. Seems to be linked to suspension. The knowledgble of you will understand the link and perhaps point me in the right direction Read more

So I'm thinking about getting my car valet.

Before I had kids - I could spend all weekend on it and make it look great, two kids of two and under, and a full time job - I just don't have the time or inclination.

I have a 2002 Ford Focus in black - 23k original miles - and I've had it since new.

It's starting to get a little marked, luckily mostly on the clear-coat, with a few scuff marks from the neighbour's kids football, sticky fingerprints from my kids, my wife's inability to grasp the door handle without scratching the car - and a few more scratches that fortunately don't got too deep.

Plus - at one time I must have got lazy with my polishing in years gone by - as I have managed to lock in some water-marks under what seems to be a few layers of wax.

What I am not looking for is someone to hose my car down with shampoo and a wash-mitt, this I can do myself and it only takes 40 mins or so.

Never had a car valet before - and I want to get it done so in the summer I can feel proud of driving around in a nicely polished car.

Would a normal valet fix all these little niggles - or would I be best to pay a extra?

I don't know what the going rate is for a valet - and what would be covered by a standard wash. Read more

I tried car shampoo a while back (as opposed to fairy liquid for 40yrs) left the hands a little sticky I thought.. And nowhere near as good at cleaning white van paint

Noticed this article in the Telegraph recently: buy 30 litres of fuel and get 14 day's breakdown cover. It seems to be one of the better 'free' offers around.

Telegraph: tinyurl.com/mgo8bp
Total's site: tinyurl.com/lpyo3g

I first came across this offer earlier in the year but, at the time, the only participating dealers appeared to be in the Kent & Essex areas ? no good for me.

Total's service station finder doesn't seem to be working for me at the moment so I don't know if the offer is now nationwide.

Anyone tried it?

Normally we tend not to use Total fuel ? I find that it makes the exhaust smell of garlic :-) Read more

Total fuel, which the last time I used it was so foamy it spilled out the filler nozzle

im only the messenger i just thought it may help someone for the sake of
it 30 ltrs aint a kings ransom but a bit of road side assistance could
be of use ..buckshee?

Maybe Total are saying you need it if you use their fuel? ;-)

i have a zetec 1.25 16v. recently it seems to have lost its power. it doesnt misfire, judder or have starting problems. No water or oil loss .

However, it seems to have lost any power even if drop down a gear to overtake. the revs dont climb away when flooring the accelerator, so i dont think it is the clutch.

Any help appreciated.
Bought the car 5 months ago and is probably due a service.

Hi Graham,

as difficult as it is trying to diagnose something you cannot see and hear, there is a good chance from the description you give and the age of the vehicle that it has a blocked exhaust, either a melted cat or a collapsed baffle is top of the list for my money. ...

tdi 110bhp, common VW engine etc

A/C has never worked despite regassing. Suspect compressor is not coming on as no change in revs when A/C engaged. How best to check operation of the compressor?

It always seems to have approx 5v going to it, even when A/C not selected. I tried taking power direct to it from battery (with engine OFF) but couldn't detect any noise of internal clutch engaging. Or would this ONLY occur when engine running?

many thanks for your spedy reply! When you say the clutch plate falls off, is this internal or visible? What is the remedy, a new compressor or just screw it back on? Do I have to remove from vehicle and take it apart?

I did try connecting power and head no click of engagement, but will try to confirm again

I don't think I was listening, but I don't doubt what you say.

I am far freer in my language than I should be myself to tell the truth. My grandchildren often remonstrate with me about it, and I often have to apologise. But I do agree that sometimes on TV one hears stuff that oughtn't to be broadcast and that I think offensive, even if I am not really offended myself, if you see what I mean.

Quite a lot of it isn't swearing or obscenity (although lots is) but nasty jokes about real people. There's a fine line that is often transgressed.
