Front window wipers switch on for no reason whatsoever even when they are on intermittent, they go to normal sweep, also my windscreen washers are not working front and rear, checked fuses, all seems in order, thought it may be the wiper stalk so managed to take it apart, all contacts seemed ok, cleaned it up and away I went, scooshers still didnt work then 5 mins into journey wipers switched on.... aaaahhhhh

Purchased a used wiper stalk on ebay cos a new one from the dealer is a small fortune, same happened again, now unless I am extremely unlucky and have 2 faulty stalks I am thinking its the pump (cant find one on ebay and not buying from dealer)...but why is it shorting the wiper..... or is it the ecu? has anyone had this problem or can anyone help, thanks Read more

There have been several threads in the past relating to car cleaning (or the lack of it) but I'd like to hear of the differing attitudes that backroomers have towards the cosmetic and mechanical care of their cars.

What is your attitude towards the cosmetic upkeep of you car, do you take pride in its appearance? What about routine servicing, do you take it to the garage once a year but never lift the bonnet inbetween? Would you not bother repairing scuffs and scratches or are you a detailing enthusiast?

It seems to me that the bulk of the motoring population don't bother much about either and only really think in terms of the impending M.O.T. I think that it's healthy to take an interest in the mechanical condition and physical appearance of one's automobile. I feel that people who do this are more likely to take pride in their driving too, which is usually a good thing.

I was intrigued that a couple of posters have cars which they "hover" from time to time. Now that's cool.....

Hi,

I had a stone bounce up on to the bonnet the other week and cause two tiny chips on my bonnet - one has gone in deepish though - and I think I need to get some paint to touch up the paintwork and seal it.

What is the best way to go about this? Should I get someone in to do it or is this something that I can do myself?

It really is 'need an airfix tin size of paint tin and probably a single hair artist brush' to simply touch this up. I just want to seal it more than anything.

If I go down the route of doing it myself where can I get the paint from - anyone know of places where I can order the specific paint?

Or am I going about this in the wrong way?

Thanks,

Both of mine came with some touch in paint. Look in the 'glove' box as suggested and in the drawer under the passenger seat.

Had a problem with my cruise control, to start with nothing working, no "cruise" light showing etc. then airback light came on and stayed on. Forums indicated this to be a clockspring fault which local chrysler dealer replaced under lifetime recall. Now "cruise" light comes on when button pressed then fades away after a few seconds, unable to set speed . Going to try replacing the brake switch but if that doesnt work any other suggestions. unlikely the brake light switch. First I would look for an air leak on the vacuum lines. Is it only after you try and set the speed that the light goes out or will it do it when it is standing still?

Hello everyone,
I went to check the oil on my car today (2.0 TDI 140bhp DSG A3 with 56k miles) and there was a lot of oil pooled by the filler cap area. I am very worried that this could mean there is a major issue such as gasket or piston about to crop up. I have not noticed any over-heating even though I drive through central London everyday. From checking the dip stick it appears the oil is low even though I had it serviced in April 09.
When I got home today I let the car cool down and went to check it again for oil and there was a small bit of oil outside the filler cap again even after I had cleaned it. With the engine running I took out the dip stick and there was smoke coming out - I assume that is normal?
If anyone could shed some light or offer advice, it would be much appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi There,

Many months ago I had a problem with my alarm and dash board display going out intermitantly. I followed Merlin Tec's advice and smacked the top of the dash as hard as I could and.........HEY PRESTO has worked fine ever since.

BUT it has revealed another problem which I have lived with, but is now really getting up my nose, RIGHT UP!!

When you turn on the ignition the speedo goes straight to 30mph and the rev counter up to 500rpm, consequently when you are driving 30mph it reads 60, 40=70mph and so on, you get the idea.
PLEASE CAN ANY ONE HELP
Many Thanks

Hi
Looks that way or a new board.

Failed/seized aircon compressors seem to be a fairly common occurrence and rectification can be very expensive. When it happened to my Megane RXE 2.0 a couple of years ago I'd have been happy to forgo the aircon but the repairer despite extensive searching and attempts to find a shorter aux belt to bypass the seized compressor couldn't. Just thinking on this, googling reveals a healthy supply of bypass pulleys (basically an idler pulley mounted on a plate which bolts straight on to the compressor mounts) in the US for common US vehicles and several Asian imports. There doesn't seem to be anything comparable here and we're stuck with the expensive replacement compressor. Or am I wrong and just not looking hard enough? I'd have though there's be a market for such things here as aircon becomes more and more common and cars with it get older. Read more

Well, possibly, but I was happy to take him at his word. That particular model only came with aircon and there was no variant with that engine without it. I know you can one off order drive belts for ancient rotovators and the like but I don't know whether this is possible with tightly spec'd car auxiliary belts. Looking around the American sites, they seem to have the same problem with trying to find shorter belts - hence the availability of idler pulleys.

Just been looking through the site. I am looking for a particular car, and have been for the past week or so. I am looking for a fairly common car, mazda 6.
Plenty of choice on eBay, auto trader amongst others, but mainly the same cars at the same prices.
I was hoping this site would be different, but I could only find the same cars and no cheaper. Disappointed!!!! Expecting after reading on Honest John about carsite.uk the greatest buying experience ever, AND save 20%. Not happening I feel.
Please correct me if I am wrong, or please point me in the right direction!!
