My N/S front door won't open. The central locking works (button goes up and down as usual), but the door won't budge!!! Any ideas on how I can open it? T.I.A Andy Read more
In particular, when pushing back the brake piston.
In recent years I have adopted a technique, particularly with cars equipped with ABS, that prevents flow of hyrdaulic fluid back up the hydraulic system, as I'm led to believe this can damage the ABS.
It's simple really, I put a hose clamp on the flexi, open the bleed valve then push back the piston.
The reason I ask is that I have suggested this simple procedure on another forum dedicated to Fiats and have had an avalanche of replies suggesting it's not necessary.

I wedge the brake pedal down with a cricket bat - adjust the driver's seat to suit. This is quicker than clamping a hose and does not cause damage.
It's a very bad idea to allow any form of contaminated fluid to flow into an ABS unit. By keeping the general flow of fluid in the system "outwards", cleaner fluid with a higher boiling point is kept where it is needed - in the calipers. The point about keeping the bleed screws free is also very valid - I wrap a small amount of PTFE tape around bleed screws fitted to iron calipers.

Somehow managed to book a weekend away this weekend in Newton Abbot and now realise that its Glastonbury.
I need an alternative route than A303 as I am travelling on Friday afteroon, and this cannot be changed. Considered M4 and M5 but think this might also be affected by Glastonbury traffic.
Anyone know what the A31 via Dorchester is like as a road? Is it similar to A303 in being a fast A road?
Thanks

Whilst in Newton Abbot, get yourself in to the Locomotive in East Steet for Sunday lunch. The pub's hardly salubrious but you won't get a better roast dinner in N A and at £5.50 it's a steal - the afters is a bit dear though - £2.....for fresh fruit and ice cream!!! See you in there.
Came across a guess the car competition today at tinyurl.com/mgbyy7 which looks challenging - to kick off the easiest one for me is #10 - a Jag XJ220

I'm looking to get something along the lines of VAG-COM to use on my Peugeot Partner HDI.
It seems there are various interfaces / pieces of software out there you can pick up to do this, so has anyone out there got any direct comparative experience of these which they could pass on and use to recommend a combo of interface / software which would enable me to read / reset fault codes etc, on my car.

I have seen a 2003 53 Reg VAUXHALL Corsa 1.2 16v SXi 5 door for 3995 at a local dealers. It is in very good condition and has a low mileage, it has had 2 previous owners, the last of which was a 50 yr old local who has owned it from 6mths old. The dealer will include 12mths MOT and tax, 6mths warranty and will discount £50. We have been looking for a while for a 5 door corsa, there aren't many about. Parkers guide gives a price of £3495 for an independant. The dealer says that good second hand cars are in short supply. We have seen similar car at a different dealers and they wouldn't budge at all on their price, again this was valued lower on Parkers.
Do you think this is a fair deal for this car?

It's just so convenient; in town etc...
There's some value in all that you say - I don't mean to sound flash but I gave up buying used cars years ago, it's too much hard work and too time consuming. Some friends of ours needed a 5dr supermini recently and they really struggled too.
Is there no way you could reasonably get your Nissan MOT'd? You'd be able to get the £2K scappage then. Maybe a Nissan dealer would do something anyway, I think they have offers in addition to scrappage.
One thing on the 1.6 Corsa - you mentioned it'll be used for the kids to learn to drive in, have you checked the insurance cost for both learning, and when they pass (often jumps up a lot once they pass). We had a 1.6 Clio a few years ago and it was hard to get a decent price as most people wanted 1.2's.
Anybody used the Tesco car warranty? I have heard they are supposed to be ok. Read more
Presumably, like Tesco baked beans, somebody else supplies the product and Tesco badge it. The customer service will be slick and the conditions clearly expressed.
At the end of the day though the premiums taken will substantially exceed the amount paid in claims (& if not Tesco will exit the business pretty sharply).
Drivers will be able to sleep, read, work or watch television behind the wheel of their cars at 70mph on the motorway, using technology being developed by scientists.
A system which will lock cars together using sensors and wireless technology, allowing up to ten at a time to cruise in ?car train? convoys, could be unveiled within two years.
Sensors would synchronise each car to follow in the wake of the vehicle directly ahead, with a laser calculating the speed relative to other cars at a rate of 50 times a second.
The only steering and braking would be done by a professional driver at the front of the convoy.
However the system, being developed by Volvo, could lead to a rethinking of the traditional ?braking distances? in the Highway Code.
Volvo expects the cars to drive just 3ft apart in order to stay in contact.

just occured to me that the same applies for the end of journey if the system automatically disengages and the driver is asleep he has to wake up yawn, stretch and have a good scratch all before hurtling forward the 3ft 'safety distance'!!! and becoming an uninvited passenger in the car in front :-)

Hi
Daughter is importing her car into the UK and wants me to fit an MPH speedo. Does any one know, if I get a second hand one does it retain the mileage when removed or pick up the mileage when fitted?
Any info gratefully received.
Great site by the way
