00 1.4 Engine check light on - csgmart

I was driving home this evening and the engine check light came on. A bit scary as I was in the outside lane of the M5 at the time. Managed to pull over to the hard shoulder though.

The engine would not rev over 3,000 but otherwise seemed fine.

I limped onto the next junction and pulled off the motorway. Switching off the engine seems to have 'reset' things and the car is driving normally, however the engine check light is stil on.

I guess this is because a fault has been flagged and it needs to be reset?

My BiL works for a garage and he will check it for me on Thursday. In the mean time am I OK to drive around?
