We're thinking about eventually replacing our Synergie which has been brilliant, but is getting on in miles. Does anyone make a compact 6/7 seater with swivel seats and flat floor, in a vehicle that's not huuuuge? The Synergie is only 4555mm long, and the new breed of Fiat / Citroen Scudo seem to be considerably longer. Don't mind it being a bit utilitarian. Read more
Hi there, just after some advice, a teeny tiny pin prick of a hole has appeared on my radiator, firing a little jet of liquid out the front of the grill mesh. What are my options? Help! Read more
A Blob of Araldite Glue has always worked for me (on countless old bangers in my youth) - Must be dry though.
My VTS has done 52000miles and has now developed an intermittent fault/faults. Every couple of days or so the engine will stutter slightly and then on tickover (normally 1000 revs) the revs drop to about 500 and then pick up back to 1000, then drop again and so on, taking about a second to drop/rise again. This is a definite rhythm and not erratic. The symptom will go away again just as suddenly later in the day and then drives fine for the rest of the journey.
Less frequently, about 3/4 times in the last month, the engine loses all power while driving- no warning lights come on until you coast to a stop and dip the clutch, then just the usual lights are on. The engine will restart straight away and may be fine or may have the fast/slow tickover described above. The car passed the MOT last week and had it's last full service in July 2008, 7000 miles ago.
The car is being PX for a new one under the Scrappage scheme, but there is a 3 month wait for the new car. Therefore I am reluctant to give the garage an open cheque book to change everything they can think of when it may still come back faulty. However I am not looking forward to another 3 months of potential engine cut-outs, and would be very grateful if anyone has any suggestions for where to look first, even if I have to take it to the garage for them to do. Thank you in advance. Read more
Sounds like: the the crank sensor failing.
(common fault)...Intermittent cut outs when hot are the sympton. Replacement cost £50 ish..
Or the connector plug is corroded.
It will not show a fault code if the crank sensor fails.
Alternatively the idle speed control motor is faulty (another common fault).New one c £80...
This post is here so we do not have another thread on this and this is a motoring site after all.

Or it may well be written off! The last page is startling, the back of the car isnt strong enough in a 6mph crash and causes £2300 in repairs Read more
I am saying that american cars are so pig ugly that an RSJ at the front and back makes no difference to their looks. The extra weight may even help the handling.
Anyway american drivers are sooooooooo useless they need all the help they can muster.
According to a report in "The Other Paper", road deaths last year were recorded as 2,538, the lowest number since records began in 1926. When you consider how traffic levels have multiplied since then it is a tribute to modern car engineering, allowing occupants to walk away from accidents that would have been fatal even a couple of decades ago.
It's a pity there are no comparitive figures for accidents per miles travelled, as there is no way of telling whether we have become safer drivers ourselves or whether it is all down to technology.
Oops - covered in the A roads thread. Read more
I believe that technology and advances in medical science are the major factors.
In my driving lifetime seatbelts were optional, tyres were cross-ply, airbags unheard of, crash barriers non-existent, crash helmets for motorcyclists optional, crumple zones didn't exist.
Life support systems were crude, drugs and surgery less advanced.
It's not surprising that accidents are less life-threatening.
However, the camera lobby will claim it's all down to their machines.
Hi all, had the roof on tilt today as normal during hot weather, went to close it earlier and it sticks. I have to push it down for it to clunk and close. I have greased the gearing and rails and cleaned the paintwork and the weatherstrap. It seems to struggle a bit to open as well. When I slide it, it does pull it closed and then slide and when I slide it close, it sits flush. It seems when I close it from tilt I have the issue.
Its a 2005 2.3 which I've had from new. Any ideas??

According to the manual of the Honda Accord 2005 diesel, the alternator belt should be replaced when the mileage reaches 75,000 miles - 100,000 miles. However, it seems majority of people including the honda specialist in London believe that it is not necessary as far as the belt is in good condition and the tensioner appropriately set.
Isn't there a possibilty of spontaneous rupture even in apparent good looking belts?
what do you think? Read more
put a new serpentine belt on a car thats done the mileage and the new noise it generates will drive you nuts
i wouldnt change it if it looks in good condition and no serious cracking
Dear backroomers,
Thank you very much for your patience on this matter. We do our utmost to continually ensure that our interactive systems are as secure as possible, and regularly review the extensive measures in place to safeguard our visitors.
However the site security has recently been compromised. All evidence
points to random hackers based in Eastern Europe, who focused their
efforts in causing chaos in the main site. The server was not
compromised.
We have addressed the issue, putting additional security measures in
place. We are also now adding a further level of protection to encrypt
passwords, this will be implemented by Wed 1st July.
Meanwhile, the advice - please change your password, please alter your
password at regular intervals, avoid using the same password across
multiple sites. Ensure your computer is up to date with virus software.
Many thanks for your continued support

My sis-in-law has this in her B-class Merc. She reckons it's really good, the only problem that I can see is that it doesn't have a map.
It can warn you of fixed camera locations too, but not mobile ones, as she found out to her cost the other day ;-(
I'd just get a standard Espace. I know its big, but very versatile too
