My Son is up at Fort William sking and has just returned to the car but forgot to unset the alarm and it triggered. He appears unable to turn it off. He has tried his second key fob but it is still going off. It is not an auto set type just a two button fob to set or unset the alarm/ immobilser it does not control the doors. The second button is a panic button. The alarm is a factory fitted Laserline alram. Any ideas. Regards Peter Read more

An email has been doing the rounds in our office today. In order to ensure that the sender does not risk perverting the course of justice I have modified it and suggested that it stops.

If you get a fixed penalty notice through the post which also carries penalty points the computer system first sends you a demand for the cash.

When you have paid, it then sends a demand to return your licence for endorsement.

It apparently cannot handle the licence endorsement and the payment at the same time, and it cannot process the points part of the system until the financial section is complete.

If you overpay the fixed penalty, it must issue and send a refund cheque for the overpayment.

So if you overpay the fixed penalty by sending a cheque for the full amount plus £1 the system will then automatically generate a refund cheque for the over-payment and send it to you.

If you fail to present this payment the system will unfortunately remain 'open' and will be unable to generate the 'send your licence for endorsement' demand part of the program.

It does, however, record your payment of the fixed penalty, so it does not trigger the 'follow-up unpaid fine' stage.

As there is no human intervention, the points award process will not complete.

So always remember to send the correct value payment for a FPN.

It was on BBC news this morning that, in Leicester, people who don't pay their parking fines may have their cars taken to a pound and crushed, after 90 days. The worst offender there owes £10,000 in unpaid fines. Why aren't normal methods be used to collect this money (Bailiffs, sequestration of earnings orders etc?). If his car is crushed the Council will get nothing and if crushing his car writes off the debt he has had months/years of parking for the cost of, say, a £1000 car. Am I missing something here or is it Leicester Council?

Don't agree.

If the cars are disposables better to take them off the road and crush them.

Another advantage is the infrequency with which the kind of person I suspect boxsterboy is talking about tax and insure their vehicles - so another reason to get them off the road.

And, to be practical, I suspect that pursuing and collecting the debt are two very different things. I doubt someone who thinks of a car as a teabag will even have it registered in his name.

Save the planet. Crush 'em. And as for the drivers.......................

The bottle does not specify the proper change interval -which I assume would be around 10 k or 1 year-, but I'd like to know if for sure, so the engine will be well lubricated from day 1 to day... 3650? Thanks. Read more

oil change intervals should be in the handbook, not on the bottle.

I replaced the exhaust system completely on my daughter's Punto about a year ago at one of the nationwide exhaust repair outfits. Something that surprised me was that the rubber bungees were NOT renewed.

When I found one of them needed replacing, I was able to get the replacement item for the princely sum of £1.58 from a local motor factor. I shall definitely make sure next time I get an exhaust replaced, I would insist on the bungees being renewed at the same time. Read more

Very few cars share the same "bungees" so the nationwide exhaust centres would have to carry huge stocks. You could insist on having them replaced if you had the exhaust replaced at the dealers, but it would cost you a bit more than £1.58 and the hassle of fitting.

I've just had a new clutch fitted.

When taking foot off clutch pedal, it comes up half way up, a little delay, and then pops up fully.

What may be the cause of this?

The garage "replaced self adjusting clutch cable with manual adjusting type". Could it be that the clutch cable hasn't been set properly? Read more

My clutch cable is from a 1.6L mk11 Golf, I also fitted it with the cable support at the gearbox end. I have set the freeplay at around one cm. To check your freeplay just lift the clutch cable at the gearbox end and measure the gap.
My pedal sometimes still sticks halfway, but I just lift it up with my foot. If her in doors wants my Golf when her Golf dies I think I will change it back to the self adj. cable.

Hello everyone, I'm in a bit of a financial corner at the moment. The MoT and RFL on my '97R Escort are fast approaching their expiry date (31 March) and I can't afford the repairs needed for the MoT, even though the parts are likely to cost less than GBP50, plus the cost of the test itself and then the RFL all in one go.

This means my GBP400 car (on a good day) is worth at best GBP200 now, realistically more like half that amount. I work 13 miles away and start work too early to commute by bus, so I need to find a car with at least a few weeks' RFL and MoT to use until I can afford something better. Changing jobs is not an option either, I live not far from Twycross Zoo and I gather there's something of a demand/supply imbalance in the jobs market at the moment.

I've called some of the local motor dealers and asked after part-exchanges but drawn a blank. I don't want to take the risk of buying a car at auction for pennies that probably won't make it to the end of the street and I've scoured the local papers and eBay but there's nothing under GBP250 with legs (or wheels).

Are there any other likely sources I can try? I'm not trying to hoodwink anyone or promote my own car, I've been a contributor to the BR for the last six years and I'm hoping the collective knowledge of its members may be of help in my situation.

Many thanks in advance,

Dave TD.

I've heard it said that the energy used in the actual construction of a car, including processing of raw materials used to make it, is about 12% of the total energy it will use during average running. What's the truth? Obviously there will be variations, but in general? Read more

That wasn't the IMechE! It was done by a US Marketing company if I remember
correctly and I wonder if they didn't do it for the reaction of the headline
rather than scientific advancement?

Or was it the Jeep?
They started advertising themselves as the greenest manufacturer a year or so ago, on the basis that Toyotas only last about 3 years, whereas their products go on for ever. Ahem....

Hi, was wondering if anyone could help with this issue. I have a Vauxhall Corsa-semi-auto, 1 litre. It has recently been pulling/jolting, on occasions. It has also struggled to accelerate when i have taken it on the motorway which hasn't happened before.

Does anybody know what this problem could be? I haven't taken it to a garage yet as i'd quite like to get a heads up before i take it. Any help or ideas would be much appreciated. Cheers
