yokel38

could be a bearing rumbling, or it could even be just tyre noise, try swapping the tyres front to back and see if the noise goes, it's the first thing i'd try, and it's free.

Hi

Does anyone know a company that would hire out a pick up truck for the weekend in East Sussex?

Can't seem to find anywhere on Google.

Thanks, Chris. Read more

My friend who had that roll over has had her Clio fixed. It took the company a month to repair and it also needed a new MOT (passed first time) as it expired when it was being repaired. She also asked them to spray a mirror.

The total bill is £680 due to the excessive amount of voluntery excess due to her age. She has to pay this on collection, she is dropping her courtesy car off tomorrow.

Her uncle promised he could lend her the money but now he has changed his mind, all her entire family are in serious debt and without saying too much have been living beyond their means from slightly iffy credit sources and its now coming back to haunt them all.

She herself has only recently got a new job and is in severe debt.

She won't have the money until at least another month, she thinks she can just collect the car then but surely the garage/insurance will want their money regardless? How does this work?

I have offered to lend her £250 but can't lend her anymore as it will be too long until I get it all back.

Is their anyway she could do a deal with her insurance company to get this sorted out quicker? She has not been too well lately and I am worried all this will tip her over the edge. Read more

"there are no heatsinks"

There can be, but if so, they are only there to help dissipate heat from the generating process (itself maybe 80% efficient) and/or the rectifiers that turn the output into usable DC and which have to handle quite a lot of current - they're not 100% efficient either.

Hamsafar is quite right that only the current required is drawn. Just as well, really!

Hopefully this won't be seen a dumbo question but is it normal to use left foot when braking on an auto? I've always used right foot as a habit of driving a manual vehicle. Reason I ask is I broke both bones in my right leg on 30 January this year and have yet another 6 weeks from today before I can put full weight - hence no right foot breaking. Was looking to buy an auto anyway. My experiences of using the left foot to brake are that you almost fly through the windscreen as your foot is used to clutch pressure. How viable is it to learn to use left foot?

Anyone here brake with their left foot when driving an auto? Read more

This is an old chestnut and personally I can't make left foot braking seem natural. I tried it for a while but instinct puts the right boot down.

TotallySaturday1

Graham Norton is hosting a new BBC1 show called "Totally Saturday." ANYONE in our audience has the potential to take part in studio games and play to win big prizes!

Do you know someone who loves their car and want to set them up live in our studio to take part in a car related game? Do they spend their weekends cleaning, waxing and tinkering with their car? Perhaps they have a name for it? Will they never let a passenger drink or eat whilst travelling in their treasured automobile? We want to hear about them!

If this sounds like someone you know then email us NOW at totallysaturday@bbc.co.uk and with your name and number and the subject "Car Mad"

The show takes place on 29th March so get in touch soon!

Could be worse - it could be hosted by Bruce Forsyth or Sharon Osbourne, or (and this would have to be a fate worse than death) Lulu (aka Scotland's disgrace).

I asked this question a good while back (but didn't follow it up) and am asking again in the hope that someone has had some recent relevant experience:

Can anyone recommend a good air con specialist reasonably local to me? - I'm in Hemel Hempstead and am thinking Watford/St Albans maybe, but could travel further afield. Read more

I hope you dont mind me responding to these posts, I work at carcoolservices.co.uk

Unlike the majority of companies we dont use automated machines when we work on car air conditioining, they are limited by what they can do and frequently miss leaks and are no help at all in diagnosing problems.

We dont normally add dye as we dont fill cars that have leaks in them as required by the current legislation. We have specialised tests including smoke generators, OFN (oxygen Free Nitrogen) pressure testers and in-house developed tools including ultrasonic leak detectors, so we can always find leaks if they are present.

The UV dyes are limited in there use as the dyes react with the UV in normal daylight and fail to work after about 48 hours. Acording to the regulations (and in our opinion best practice) UV dyes are unnecessary as a leaking air con system should be emptied and proper leak detection used to find the leak before any refigerants are added.

I would add that many of the cars we see with leaks reported have very simple problems and we are able to repair leaking pipes and hoses using specialist equipment, avoiding expensive replacement parts.

This post has been made in an effort to provide information - Not as an advertisement, so I hope it will be read in this way.

micradame

I have a nissan micra 2007, when I start moving off on a cold morning the car judders quite strongly. I have to put the clutch back in and move off very slowly with high revs. If after about 10 minutes of driving I have to stop at a junction its fine when I pull away.
It also doesn't happen when its a warm day though.
I have had the dealership look at it but they said that the diagnostic tests showed nothing.
Any ideas anyone. Read more

Hi,

I agree with the above post - used to park my car (not a Micra) outside, and it would very occasionally do this on a damp morning - only for the first pull away. By trying to compensate for it you may be slowing down the drying out process. If it's safe to do so, pull away normally and with a bit of gusto, and put up with the judder. From memory it is only a brief sensation.

Hope this helps,

Rob.
