My car broke down yesterday, I was just about to change gear and i couldnt select gears. Called the breakdown out but they were a lackadaisical bunch who just transported myself and the car back home. Am waiting for a mechanic to call in the morning. The clutch hadnt shown signs of slipping before , anyone got any ideas???? Read more

When I tried using the windscreen washer on my car the water did not come out immediately and when it did the stream did not reach as far as usual. How much would a garage charge to put this right? Read more
lift bonnet, remove pipe that goes to the washer jet , driver side ... and blow down it ..that should cure it
I purchased my 55 reg car April 08 and had nothing but trouble since the manufacturers warrenty ran out... the engine management light keeps cummin on and the car stutters a little and doesnt accelerate as normal. The purchasing dealer said it was sticky valves but i refuse to pay the £800 they said it wud cost so i took it to a local garage and the code was misfire do they changed the spark plugs but made no difference and was wondering if any1 has any ideas? Hi, If anyone can give any advice I'd be very grateful
I have a 96 Mazda 121 (it's a rebadged Mk4 Fiesta) that has an intermittent clutch problem. Most time the car runs fine and gear changes are fine, easy and smooth, everything as normal.
Sometimes, after the car is parked and turned off, when I start the car and press the clutch in, I can't select a gear. The pedal still presses and springs back but it's like pressing the pedal hasn't engaged the clutch at all and the gearstick won't slot into gear (any of them). If I then turn the car off and play about pressing the clutch and engaging the gears before starting her up again, everything is back to normal - I've got into the habit of turning the car off and then putting it all all gears (1-5 then reverse and then back again, reverse 5-1), starting it up again and then things are OK.
It's almost as if something is stuck or misaligned and playing around with the clutch / gears and the car off unsticks it. (you've probably guessed I'm about as mechanically blessed as a goldfish). It's starting to get more frequent but does anyone have any idea of what these symptoms might be? Is this what clutches do when they start to fail? I haven't noticed any clutch slipping or dodgy smells, like I said when it works it works well! Just wanted a bit of direction before a trip to the garage because the intermittent nature means they probably won't be able to experience it for themselves.
Thanks

Basically we're at an age now where the kids are starting to leave the nest and swmbo really doesn't need to be driving around in the sensible, practical old Japanese barges with big boots we tend to always end up buying.
I'd therefore like to buy her something moderately funky (for want of a better expression) for the 15 mile round trip to work and the odd school run.
She might need to carry 2 kids from time to time so a 2 seater is out, but a stylish coupe maybe around the 6 or 7K mark sounds just the ticket.
We had thought of:
Hyundai Coupe: Plus points: looks/cost Negatives: cheapo interior
Audi TT: Plus points it's an Audi TT Negatives: Space in the rear/have to buy an older one for the price/the thought of swmbo running about in a car with 180 or goodness help us 225 bhp scares me frankly..!
BMW 3 series coupe....I honestly just don't get BMW's (apart for a perverse hankering after a 1999 or thereabouts 7 series!) they look nice in gold though!
Mini: Plus points: the wife really likes them. Negatives: seems to be reliability issues?
Saab 9-3 convertible: I think we'll have to test drive one. The only time I've sat in a 9-3 it seemed incredibly cramped and claustrophobic inside.
Anyone got any other suggestions as I really worry that we'll end up taking the sensible/predictable route and buying a focus or a Golf and then regretting it every time we see one of the above?
ps: I've discounted the Mazda RX 8 due to the engine reliability/fuel consumption issues otherwise..........

>>How about a PT Cruiser?
Sounds sort of appropriate for a Steely Dan fan...though I always suspected the PT of
being all hat and no cattle - a Royal Scam?
But I've no real basis for that and the CBC write-up is reasonable.
always nice when someone gets the username, Manatee. There should probably be a reference to 'Can't Buy a Thrill' in there somewhere too!
Im looking to buy a Mini from a garage in Manchester.
When getting a quote for insurance on the car it says that the regersation isnt vaild.
I went on DVLA and looked up the reg on there and they dont have it in there data base???
What does this mean??
That the car has new reg plates on??
Iv not been to see the car, i enquired about it after seeing it on Auto Trader!!

Hi
I have a Renault Clio with the hands-free key fob. Every now and again when you open the door (from locked) you get four beeps. I have approached two Renault dealers as to why this is happening but neither of them know.
Any ideas?

My Pug 407 is having it's first service today. (At two years old). Enquired with the supplying dealer (who were excellent when I bought it) and they wanted £261. They absolutely wouldn't budge from the price.
Decided to check with the other local Peugeot dealer (who didn't seem that interested in selling me one) and they're charging £132. What a huge difference in price. Thing is, the first dealer bend over themselves to provide customer service, and I feel almost guilty at going to the cheaper one.......but not that guilty to pay an extra £130!!
I can't understand why dealers price themselves out of the market like this. Seems to be akin to shooting yourself in the foot in the current climate.

Thanks - read original post as being serviced on Monday!
hi, my vectra suffers from brief engine run-on and ticking/tapping sound. these symptons disappear if i force the ecu into limp/ safe mode (by disconnecting the cam sensor). the eml is throwing up a cam sensor fault. ive changed this but eml remains. (ive come to understand that the eml showing a faulty cam sensor is a bit of a red herring.) this all happened after i changed the cambelt, tensioners, rollers, water pump.
the timing marks are lined up so im sure im not a tooth out and ive tried the tensioner at 4 or 5 different tensions but no change.
my only train of thought so far is that the timing is advanced which is causing pinking (the ticking sound, although ive never heard a car pink before) and being advanced this may cause the engine run on. when it goes into safe mode, the ignition is retarded and brings it back into range. plus if the timing is out of range perhaps this is why the cam sensor is throwing up a fault.
incidentally, if i put my foot on the brake when i turn the engine off i get no run on.
my tiny lack of car knowledge ends there im afraid :)
thanks, kris Read more
hi, thought i'd bring this back up.
i removed the cam sensor pins from the ecu so i could test the resistance while running the engine and i got good cam sensor readings at the pins and no inteference. it must be something else fooling the ecu into thinking the cam sensor is duff.
i also adjusted the tension and rotated the water pump a little and the engine run on has gone (touch wood). it seems to pull a bit smoother through the rev range. i feels a little underpowered but i wont be touching it again. it can wait til i can get it on a diagnostic machine.

hi have had mechanic round , messed with slave cylinder , says clutch is dead Ta.
