I have the chance to buy a 1972 Bentley Corniche at a good price, but it needs engine work. I want to put a good modern engine in it, but am a complete novice. Any suggestions for appropriate engine make and size? Am looking to end up with a good solid car, rather than a racer. I want to keep the car rather than sell it on. Thanks for any suggestions. Engine stalls at speed on the motorway - every few months. Very scary!
Usually happens near an airport and the Jag repairer we use says it may be due to electronic interference - but yesterday it happened twice, going north on the A1(M) near exit 7 and on the way home going South on the A1 near South Mimms.
Anyone else had this problem? and any ideas as to the cause ? Read more
So the ECU is still running as it has detected the speed sensor but no crank sensor thus a stall message. This starting to sound like a ignition/fuel pump relay problem. Regards Peter
I see that Google Earth has released its street view service for the UK. It only seems to cover major cities and they've blurred out faces and reg numbers but I'd imagine a few here could spot their cars at work or in the drive!
And whatever your views on the big brother aspect, it is pretty amazing technology. Read more

The 2010 British International Motor Show has been cancelled due to the global economic crisis, the organisers have announced.
Organisers claim the event could return when the economy picks up, but that?s unlikely. The SMMT recently closed its exhibitions department and industry sources say now is a good time to bury an event that has been in terminal decline for years.

The writing was on the wall when they moved it to London IMHO. That's when I stopped going, and so did a lot of people I know. It's a shame.
All these big trade shows are about building brand image, one upmanship, and networking for senior executives of companies. Direct sales are not on the agenda.
Hi Everyone Im trying to set my Zetec to TDC as I want to make sure everything is timed up ok. I have The laser camshaft and crankshaft tools but do I insert The crankshaft pin first then turn engine over by hand until it stops against the pin or do I allign the two machined ends of the cam and insert the bar ? In haynes it says to rotate the crank till the intake cam has just closed. Is the intake cam the on nearest the bulk head ?
Any help would be great.

Hi My exaust needs replacing but no one can quote me a price for the rear silencer as it is only a dealer item.
Does anyone know where I can purchase one from (dealers want a painful £172.00+VAT). Read more

Hi All,
New to this forum, so appologies if this post is not in quite the right place.
Ok, My wife has a 06 reg 1.8TDCI Ghia C-Max 47k miles, the colour is Dark Metalic Grey. Generally it's been a good car, but we now have a strange (and I'll bet expensive) problem....
Just ahead of the rear wheels, behind the bottom of the rear doors, a section of sill and wheel arch has lost all it's paint. The damage is about 4" square. Ford have inspected this and pronounced it to be due to stone chip damage. We are arguing that as this has happened in exactly the same way, on both sides of the car, this seems unlikely. In additon the car was fitted with mud flaps from new, by ford. We have suggested that the damage has ocured becasue of the way this section of the car curves out behind the doors placing it inline with any debris. As Ford didn't bother to fit any sort of plastic protection to this section we are arguing that it's a design fault. The car came from Ford Direct about 24 months ago and has a full service, and unusually paint inspection history stamped in the service book.
Any way my questions to you are --
Do other C-Max's suffer from this issue, or is it just ours?
Do other C-Max's have some sort of protection this part?
Also any ideas as how to pursuade Ford to repair this under warranty? Read more
Yes - I have the same on my 55 1.6 (which, coincidentally is dark grey also). Both sides, and it's almost certainly from stone chips. Mine does not have front mud flaps.
Sorry if I have put this in the wrong place.
Just on my slightly low spec laptop atm, Celeron 1.8 (Yonah core), 1GB RAM etc. It is a very typical laptop (I repair PCs for a living so I what the general public use and there are much older machines than this still in use).
My laptop is currently running slow, there is a high amount of processor usage and RAM usage from Firefox and it appears to be all the flash adverts on this site which is causing it.
I only have one website open and no plugins yet Firefox is taking up a massive 158MB of RAM.
I think HJ's admin need to be a little but more careful about the of adverts, a lot of sites have failed when they have overloaded as visitors just get fed up of the slowness. Some of these adds would also be much better as an animated gif, they would use so much less resources than flash adds.
The site is usually ok but with the combination of adverts I am getting now (from Renault) it a resource hog. My point is if you can't change the way the adverts work at the moment just make sure it dosn't get any worse in the future.
A content driven website which mades money from adverts only works if it was visitors, if the adverts stop the visitors from using the site then it becomes a problem. Just something to think about.
Once again maybe this post is better some where else? I am not sure. Edit part of the problem appears to be memory leaks but IE also suffers from that. Just reloaded HJ and it now works a bit better and the combination of adds are slightly different, so it seems certain combination of the flash adds make it a lot worse.

Indeed. Sorry, I was under the impression this was a motoring discussion forum.
The gearbox on my 1.8LX has been fairly notchy ever since I bought the car a couple of years ago. Today, out of the blue, it became impossible to engage 1st gear - it's as if there is a solid barrier preventing the gearchange moving into position. Selection of other gears is as normal.
This occurs whether the engine is on or off.
Anyone any idea? Gear linkage or gearbox?

Hi
I would be looking at the gear linkage as the 1st port of call then the box. I take it the clutch does not slip in any other gear ?
There is a few horror stories about the Duel mass fly wheel but this would affect all gears.

Wow, April 1 already. Where does the time go? ;-)
