2004 1.8 LS - sourcing a rear silencer. - suresh64
Hi My exaust needs replacing but no one can quote me a price for the rear silencer as it is only a dealer item.
Does anyone know where I can purchase one from (dealers want a painful £172.00+VAT).

Try these, I can't vouch for them as I've never used them:

I have just had a custom made stainless exhaust made from the cat back for £299. Ouch, but cheaper than a genuine from Honda, and the fast fit places couldn't do the bits. Quieter, looks nice (they can do boring old men types or young chav types). Worth checking out some ads and try google.

I had the same issue last year when my Vectra failed its second MOT. The actual back box was fine, but it was being failed becasue of the corroded hanger. I eventually badgered the dealer to just weld it up and they did so and passed it.

I did try third parties, but I can confirm that it is only a dealer item. I am guessing that the central sections should be more readily available, but these would be different to the hatch version becasue of the longer wheelbase.

I had similar with my 53 plate 2.0T Vectra. It's a twin exhaust and both rear boxes were rusting - bit disappointing for a five year old really. No aftermarket pattern parts available. It was main dealer parts only, IIRC about £250 for the rear boxes each or £700 odd for a complete system.

I ended up buying a complete Magnex stainless system for about £450 and getting it privately fitted. I'm happy with it apart from the fact it's classed as a modification and my insurance co stung me for an increased premium.

Reference this company. I?ve just bought a Timax system online from them. The website works well and the price (delivered) was very good. They quoted up to three days delivery, but my order was delayed because one part was out of stock. The online service doesn?t tell you this when ordering, so I suppose that?s a bit of a flaw. Anyway, I phoned them and a courteous chap explained the non-delivery problem. I received the exhaust the next day. It seems to be of good quality and fits the car OK. I would be happy to order other spares from them?their brake discs and pads look interesting?maybe my next purchase?

(It doesn't look like the op is going to be helped by this but it might be useful to others thinking of buying an exhaust online).

If you buy a pattern part you may subsequently decide that £172 + VAT for a genuine spare would have been a good purchase after all!
Genuine spares fit better, silence more effectively, and generally last longer.

I find it hard to believe that an exhaust is a dealer only part for a common car like a 1.8 Vectra. I've been able to get exhausts for far more obscure cars from fast fit places.

Don't forgot to tell your insurer that you are modifying the car.
My old Seat Ibiza was rejected by one major insurance company for having a stainless steel 'pattern' exhaust. Others allowed it without any premium changes.

I didn't much like the s/steel pattern exhaust - and I've now gone back to buying OE !

Any indy will know where to obtain a Bosal exhaust and can fit it for you. Bosal are generally better quality than the Timax fitted by the national chains.

This company has provided a very good service in the past and are a Bosal stockist. They do not show the estate variant, but it may be worth a phone call. (They are a strange outfit who are not a normal motorfactor but I think they stock Bosal because they some ownershop tie up).
