Last November, after 160,000 miles, the clutch on my Audi A4 1.8T started slipping, so I had a new one put in at my local VAG dealer.

However, 8,000 miles later, this one has started slipping.

The dealer has said that he will need to remove the gearbox etc to see what the problem is (fair enough, of course). However, I'm worried that he'll come up with some excuse that it isn't his fault (unless it's clearly a faulty part) and I'll end up having to pay for another clutch.

Does anyone have any suggestions about how I should approach this? I'm not particularly mechanically minded and could probably be easily conned, especially when dealing with badly fitted clutches.

Once the car's in 1001 bits, I'm not in a position to take it somewhere else for a 2nd opinion!

Thanks in advance

No everything feels normal, apart from the slipping.

Hi folks i wondered what your thoughts were on this.
I bought a 2007 57 plate ford focus tdci from a well known national chain ford dealer in jan 09.The car had 18000 miles when purchased . Ive not had any problems with the car .The car was advertised as a Ford Direct warranty qualifying car and when i picked it up was given a ford Direct warranty form copy which the dealer sends his part off to register the warranty. The cars previous owner had delayed the first service until 14000 miles so i was aware the manufacturers 3 yr warranty was void, but was comfortable with the ford direct 2 yr warranty and this included 2 yrs breakdown cover. I was sent a Ford Direct warranty pack but this was for a similar focus with 1 letter out in the registartion document and related to a petrol focus which ,coincidently was owned by the same dealer group ! I queried this with Ford Direct and was told they would not validate the warranty as it had ceased to be Ford Direct car when the dealer had not sold it within 180 days of supply from ford and they were 30 days out. I am suspicious the dealer knew this, i have contacted them and they say they will contact ford direct themselves monday. I have advised them that i want the proper warranty though ford direct or if they still refuse to honour it then the dealer pays me to obtain 2yrs warranty / 2 yrs breakdown cover with Rac /warranty direct which will cost approx £ 700. Am i unreasonable i love the car but am already feeling suspicious of the dealer ? Read more

The car was serviced at 14000 miles book stamped and again at my request when delivered at 18000miles( 16 mths old ). The 14000 mile sevice was done just prior to 1 yr old but clearly should have been done at 12500miles. I have since put 3000 miles on it with no complaints till now The dealer is contacting ford direct tomorrow . Ill see what they say and ill report back

Customer complained he couldnt release the boot from the inside pressing the button behind the window switches in the handbrake cover. Checked the wiring inside the boot and all ok and the solenoid operates if you give it a direct feed proving solenoid wiring and earth are sound. The switch didnt 'feel' right, no definite 'click' and sure enough had evidently been groisted apart by the previous owner so a new switch was fitted by the current owner who called to say no improvement. The wiring is all lightweight stuff and doesnt match the wiring in the boot. Is there a relay for it somewhere? Owners handbook and AutoData dont mention one.

the boot release system works via the central locking control module

I`ve been having problems with my 1995 MK6 1.6 Escort Ghia where the boot release button wouldn`t work. I was sat here at home going through various forums when I came across this forum where thought about where I work as a TV engineer where TV`s nowadays are computers, you have to re-boot a lot of TV`s nowadays because the computer has thrown a wobbly, I thought from reading your posts about the button being connected to the central locking, (computer) maybe I should re- boot it. Hey! I`ve had the battery off for 5 minutes and I`ve now got a working tailgate button. Thankyou Honest John. Ian...

Hi

the on board diagnositcs on my CLK 320 report that a rear light bulb is blown, but when I check, all rear lights are working fine,

the display says it is running on a reserve bulb,

is that correct, do Mercs have back-up bulbs. can't be bothered fixing a problem that doesn't exist, it could quite happily run like this for years - all lights working but I would love to clear the error display from the dashboard

Also... occasionally it tells me the rear number plate bulb is out, but again when I go and check, it isn't it is fine... this info message has come up 2 to 3 times in 3 months, since the bulbs are all good, the reporting of the error intermittent, the "area" of issue broadly the same (rear lighting) I am actuually wondering if the diagnostic system is faulty not any of the bulbs.

Can it be reset?

Also... need a new indicator / multi function stalk fitted, the current one does not stay in position when indicating - dealer quoted me huge £££, any suggestions? Read more

check that all the bulbs are correct wattage, and/or correct type.
also use decent quality bulbs, the warning system doesnt like cheap and nasty bulbs.

I'd been hoping to find a smallish, Japanese, chain-cam diesel with 'proper' torque-converter auto' gear-box that's been made for long enough to be proven and in sufficient quantities to be available relatively inexpensively second-hand. Closest to that brief is the Toyota Yaris with the erm, unusual MMT 'box. (It's rare, so I tried the Auris and found it to be um, interesting.)

So I've widened my search outside of Japan: and included the dreaded belt-cam, too. I've lit on the VW Golf (and its derivatives) diesel with DSG gear-box. I tried the Skoda Superb TDI in 1.9 (4-cyl) and 2.5 (V6) forms and found them both nice, but nose-heavy.

Does anyone have long experience of the Golf diesel auto to tell me what it's like day-to-day, please? I'm no speed-merchant and just want a quiet-ish, reliable, economical car. Is the Golf it? Driven sensibly, what's its range, please? And how often (and for how much) does that dratted belt have to be changed?

Thank you,

AF. Read more

On that plate it's more than likely a multitronic CVT box.

To try to stop this car stalling at speed I would like to shield the ECU from electronic interference (to remove one possible reason).

I intend, if possible, to make and fit a Faraday cage over the ECU - but I can't find it !

Anyone out there who can tell me where it is?

Thanks. Franklin. Read more

You don't need to earth a Faraday cage. Franklin.

hi last night i was driving and smoke started coming from the dashboard. i had a look around and realised it was comin from the fuses under the steering wheel. i felt it to see if they were warm and one of the relays were boilin. it was all melted and the motherboard was sparking up. i had to kick it off before it went up in flames. i think this happened because of the demister, any ideas how to fix it? thanks Read more

Recently have found that there is water leaking into the front footwells, and no apparent or obvious sight of entry.
I have heard that it could be something to do with the pollen filter or blocked run off tubes in the sunroof. Does anyone know how these can be easily checked, or if anyone else has had a similar problem, what the solution was.

This coupled with a failed turbo, is making me rethink about the delights of the X Trail.

1car1, which went into administration last week, is having its fleet of 15,000 vehicles returned to its financiers, meaning it will soon become unviable as a going concern.

PWC as adminsitrators said that hundreds of employees will lose their jobs immediately and hundreds more face a very uncertain future.

PricewaterhouseCoopers said it is working on strategies to "salvage value from the business, however the main trading business and the company?s 15,000 vehicle fleet is likely to be wound down over the next five weeks".
