The nicest VAG-Group diesel auto to drive? - AllFumbs
I'd been hoping to find a smallish, Japanese, chain-cam diesel with 'proper' torque-converter auto' gear-box that's been made for long enough to be proven and in sufficient quantities to be available relatively inexpensively second-hand. Closest to that brief is the Toyota Yaris with the erm, unusual MMT 'box. (It's rare, so I tried the Auris and found it to be um, interesting.)

So I've widened my search outside of Japan: and included the dreaded belt-cam, too. I've lit on the VW Golf (and its derivatives) diesel with DSG gear-box. I tried the Skoda Superb TDI in 1.9 (4-cyl) and 2.5 (V6) forms and found them both nice, but nose-heavy.

Does anyone have long experience of the Golf diesel auto to tell me what it's like day-to-day, please? I'm no speed-merchant and just want a quiet-ish, reliable, economical car. Is the Golf it? Driven sensibly, what's its range, please? And how often (and for how much) does that dratted belt have to be changed?

Thank you,

AF.

Please dont worry too much about an engine having a belt drive camshaft, these days as long as its changed in accordance with the manufacturers schedule, its extremely unlikely to break. Also, a cam chain does not last indefinately, will cost a lot more to replace than a belt and they do fail far more than most people realise !

The 2 litre PD unit is an 80,000 mile change. Don't know about the latest common-rail though.

I think it's 60,000 miles for the PD?

BIL has a judder on his A4 estate with DSG, auto specialist has quoted £4.5K for a rebuild with new plates etc.
100K plus, can't remember the exact mileage.
I haven't driven it, but they both like the car.

Just thought this may be of interest.

Edit, delivered some Suzuki's (can't remember the name but looks like the mini) recently with proper auto's, the box felt good, as did the smaller Alto? with proper auto.

Gordon - which A4? DSG isn't yet available on the diesel versions.

I'm on my second A3 DSG diesel - first one trouble free, second one had a new mechatronic unit at 18,000. £1,000 just for the parts.

Something like 04/54 plate estate, he always has diesel cars and tells me it is a DSG, but if thats wrong i can get on the blower and confirm precisely what it is.
I haven't looked inside the car meself, once i heard the rebuild cost i wanted to keep it at arms length.

AF, i can't remember whether the diesel Suzi had auto or not, i only really took notice as the box was such a pleasant one amid these horrid automated manuals.

I know about as much use as a chocolat teapot..;)

On that plate it's more than likely a multitronic CVT box.

Thank you, all: I shall have a look at a s'hand Golf now with no fear re the cam-belt though I'll expect its DSG box to make £4,500-sounding noises soon after purchase! Thanks for the warning, 'gordonbennet'; oh, and these Suzis you've been delivering: nice to know they've a proper auto 'box but is that with a diesel engine?

Thanks again,

AF.

I don't particulary care for BMWs, but the 2.0 litre TD can be found with a 6-spd slushbox. It is particularly nice to drive in "-18" and "-20" derivatives.

The 6-cyl is nice too but the extra performance comes with a chunky rise in consumption.
