96 1.8 New clutch sticking half way up - bluehaven
I've just had a new clutch fitted.

When taking foot off clutch pedal, it comes up half way up, a little delay, and then pops up fully.

What may be the cause of this?

The garage "replaced self adjusting clutch cable with manual adjusting type". Could it be that the clutch cable hasn't been set properly?

Could be. The garage that fitted it should make it work properly; the job done should have a guarantee/warranty.

40.000 miles ago I also replaced the self adjusting clutch cable with a manual adjusting Golf mk11 cable to my Golf 111 2l GTI. Because the clutch pedal mechanism is an over the center type worked by a a spring in the pedal box, you need to adjust the manual cable with very little freeplay. You MUST have some freeplay, so keep a eye on the freeplay especially when the clutch is new and wearing in.

My clutch cable is from a 1.6L mk11 Golf, I also fitted it with the cable support at the gearbox end. I have set the freeplay at around one cm. To check your freeplay just lift the clutch cable at the gearbox end and measure the gap.
My pedal sometimes still sticks halfway, but I just lift it up with my foot. If her in doors wants my Golf when her Golf dies I think I will change it back to the self adj. cable.
