Hi. Does anyone know how much it should cost for an alternator to be mended and fitted.
Also how much would you expect to pay for a front brake calliper to be supplied and fitted (mates rates!!) On a 1.6 escort R reg

Hi there,
I'm thinking of buying a used high mileage ex-fleet focus 2 TDCi estate for budgetary and hang glider / bicycle haulage reasons. I intend to keep and run it daily for 9-18 months.
My reading up shows that if you get a good used TDCi then they are great but I don't want to buy a duff one. Specifically I would like to know how you can tell if the dual mass flywheel is about to let go and perhaps get some indication of how healthy the high pressure fuel pump is from a test drive.

Is there anything else other than the usual buyers checks that I should examine?

Anyone out there able to offer any advice would be a big help

thanks

Looking for a larger family car and decided we can compromise on 5 rather than 7 seats. Therefore been looking for what offers us most space and towing ability for our 1325kg MTPLM caravan whilst keeping within 3500kg total MAM (car + van, total MAM of car NOT kerbweight) so both myself and my wife don't have to go to the hassle of taking our B+E test.

I know there are plenty of caravan haters here, but could anyone with a mk III CRV disesl do me a favour and check their ID plate for the MAM please? The Honda website says 2160kg but wanted to confirm this before seriously considering it, as this is within a whisker (well 15kg) of 3500kg total. If this is correct I am delighted to be able to consider a CRV without the B&E, and I'm quite keen.

On another point, does anyone tow with one and know how it manages?

Finally, do Honda fit memories to the electric seat on the EX model? We have this on our Octavia and it is incredibly useful when two people regularly drive the car, no faffing adjusting the seat as it does it to the drivers key when opening up.

No reference to memory seats in the Manual - looks like the power seat is "driver side" only as well.

So the road side test is ONE HUNDRED PER CENT accurate then ?
No possibility of error or improper use. ?

Family friend is a car trader. Buys at auction then sells from a lot. Sold a car to someone who travelled a good distance to buy it. Buyer found a fault, garage fixed fault and also carried out a timing belt change FOC as a goodwill gesture and paid for a tank of fuel.

Buyer demanded money back. Garage refused as they had fixed the fault and this is all they are required to do.

Buyer sued, garage defended the action. Buyer lost and was presented with a bill for £17,000 in legal fees, buyer now bankrupt.

If you want to sue ensure you are going to win.

Family friend also concurs that auction prices are increasing which is raising prices on the lots.

Assuming the tale is true, then the litigant was badly advised. He must have got to a point where he was risking more in legal fees than the car was worth. Any decent solicitor/counsel would have pointed this out, and made sure the buyer was creditworthy should he lose in court.

I think there's a bit more we don't know.

Saw this van today, caught my eye as it was very clean and seemed good value but vans not my area of expertise and I know nothing of Transits!

Van in question is a 2004 SWB tdi 85 1998cc with 56k and full history being sold by a reputable family dealer I fully trust.
I spoke to the salesman who said it did need some prep before sale and looking round it, there were some rust spots here and there, but few vans this age dont have them due to the low paint standards for these work vehicles.
The price is just under £4.5k inc VAT which sounded quite cheap but is it really?

Im half tempted if only because insurance would rise only £5 a month over my Charade and road tax £15 a month. Any ideas what sort of economy they give and what the servicing costs/requirements are? And most importantly, how reliable are they?

Thanks in advance, Im hoping someone talks me out of it conclusively! Read more

Washer pump has been changed. Sometimes it works so I suspect maybe there is relay which is sticking.

Hi all
I have a 1.8 ADZ motor in my car, when I try to start it in the morning it winds over and over for ages then picks up on one cyl and fires up,runs a bit "fluffy" for a few seconds and all is well, drive it to work, leave all day, starts fine, leave over night and same problem.
I have re-placed plugs ,dizzy cap, rotor, leads and the injector unit rubber gasket, which was split in two, which I though was the problem but no,still the same.
There is a bit of oil around from the breather on the injector area, could this be messing things up?
Thanks! Read more

Coolant temp sensor may not be showing ecu an accurate reading, i.e not cold enough. Consequently insufficient enrichment ("choke") is applied. I'll try and remember to check AutoData for correct voltage readings at a given temperature for you to check.
