Todays's auction report shows that used prices are on the rise but I don't think it shows just how much they have risen in the last few weeks. Before Christmas, most cars were struggling to get near "book". Now, to use some of today's examples at Blackbushe:
S-Type 2.7 D V6, 23k, Glasses: 12050. Sold: 12600 (and this was Grade 5 online which means horrible)
VW Tourag 2.5 TDI, 28k CAP Clean: 15600. Sold: 16300
Honda Accord 2.2d Exec, CAP Clean 3475, Sold: 3500 (these were well under book 1 month ago)
Peugeot 307 HDI, 40k, CAP Clean: 5175, Sold: 5850
Audi A6 TDI, 114k, CAP Clean: 5725, Sold: 6450
VW Bora 1.9 PD 100, 45k, CAP Clean: 4125, Sold: 5150
BMW 525d, 119k, CAP Clean: 7175, Sold: 8050
If this goes on it will filter through quite quickly to retail prices. Read more
Hello - I'm new to this and to diesel!
I have a well maintained mondeo - serviced and low mileage for year - I also have an excellent and trustworthy mechanic - and we're stumped by the car's behaviour.
Occasionally on start up (hot or cold) the 'engine' clatters and revs extremely high (into red) even after I've switched the ignition off. White smoke pours out (so much that there is no visibility around the car for a while and it usually causes quite a stir if there are onlookers!)
I can, however start up again and all seems well (no clatter or revs) and off I go - sometimes white smoke pours out for a few miles (annoying other motorists) and sometimes it clears quite quickly.
There are periods where the car behaves beautifully and other times it will have the above tantrum in a 'cluster'
Filters, pump, injectors, timing and turbo all appear OK
Oil has been changed and not over filled
Accelerator 'arm' has been fixed (sticking a little)
HELP!! Any ideas welcome.
PS This morning white smoke poured out profusely - so much I couldn't use it - very smelly also - but no high revving - a conundrum...

Changed the boost valve on the front of the diesel pump. There was diesel in the pipe to the turbo indicating a split diagphram. Perfect now!
2006 D5 SE V70 (185) Manual. 31000 miles on the clock, purchased 2 months ago.
There is a resonance / vibration during 1.5 to 1.8 rev range, which is VERY evident on the steering wheel. It happens in any gear, especially bad when accerating up hill when the engine is under torque. Strange, as soon as I get past 1800 revs, the engine is as smooth as you would expect. The same can be said when cruising in 5th 6th gear, and acclerating through this rev range.
The car has been in several times to my local Volvo dealer, who have tried several things, including, changing the grey plastic engine cover, which was faulty and vibrating, this made things a bit better. They have also Inspected all the top & lower engine mounts and the mountings on the top engine stabilization bar. I have read, if at fault, the Dual mass flywheel could cause this problem. They agree, that there is unacceptable vibration evident but can't pin it down or find a cure.
Have tried several other V70's with no problems. Pity I did not return the car under thier 30 day replacement period. I have taken this matter up with Volvo UK. Read more
the 2006 version will have a DPF which has an effect on fuel consumption ,the figures you mention would be about the same as spoken about on the volvo forums under the diesel engine section

I was re-ended in December whilst stationary in a traffic jam (car was written off).
I had a month off work due to whiplash and have been told I need 12 physio sessions and it will take 10.5 months to get back to normal. The insurance company’s legal team say I should claim for £1900 - £2100.
Does this seem like the right amount?

Seems rather low to me... however, it depends on your costs, and precedent - a quick trawl of the 'net reveals guidelines of:
* £750 to £2,500 if you make a complete recovery within 1 year
* £2,500 to £4,250 if you make a complete recovery within 2 years
* £4,250 to £7,750 (slow recovery, increased vulnerability)
* £7,750 to £13,750 if you have permanent ongoing symptoms

Hiya
ABS engine Golf again.
Rattling sounds at idle from cylinders 3-4 end. Lumpy idle and inconsitant power delivery from the engine. Previous thread answers on this was to check for tappet problems.
Opened it up today and checked the cams. All shiney and look fine. Tappets don't move when pressed (lob's pointing up). So all ok?
A few oddities found:
1) possibly weak spark voltage from no1 plug (Plugs and HT leads, Disti rotor and cap are all fairly new) - measured on O'Scope with inductive probe.
2) Gunky crankcase breather tube - going to get that blown out
3) Compression test with a Laser test valve - only get 150psi per cylinder. However gauge seems to loose pressure gradually - whether on or off the engine? Odd.
4) When I turn the engine by hand you can hear air sucking at no1-2 cylinder end. Definatly from the head - not from the air intake
Grateful for any thoughts or advice!
Cheers,

Hi PeterD, all,
Finally got the Golf back together after recieving parts. Its been running well all week and is much improved - both MPG (looks better so far!) and performance.
Compression tested it this afternoon and the hissing has gone! :-)
Cylinders are now reading (1-4) - 160, 165,155,155 all PSI. All plugs removed, full throttle and 5 revolutions.
Sounds ok? All within about 10%

My 2005 A6 Avant just suffered a complete MMI failure - two months out of warranty.
Audi Dealer traced to water in front footwell taking out the telephone control unit. Gonna cost about £1,200 to fix. Dealer mumbled about possible water ingress through "plenun chamber"
Dealer is going to ask Audi UK for a goodwill gesture - but I don't hold out much hope. Interestingly my extended warranty (with Tesco's) doesn't cover water damage. Neither does Audi's for that matter.
Is this a known fault, and surely Audi must take some responsibility for such a leak on a supposed quality car with only 30K on the clock? I would be interested in other peoples' experience so I know how hard to fight with Audi.
Feedback most welcome! Read more
especially worth persuing if the dealer serviced it and damaged/incorrectly replaced the cover on the pollen filter.
The below thread details the issue with my car - essentially it is an egr fault.

I have had some good advice re: updating the ECU so that it does not look for the EGR valves (this has been confirmed on a number of other forums too).
My question is - can I do this even though my car is an automatc?
Many thanks in advance Read more
sorry not possible on the auto, manual only, going to have to bite the bullit and bye a new egr valve the good news is that they have modified them in a effort to cure this problem

It was mentioned but didn't come to anything.
