Falkirk Bairn

The move involves all Yaris models built in 2006 and 2007 and is part of a global recall involving 1.3 million cars across the world.

Car owners are being told to bring their vehicles in after the problem was identified on a component known as a "seat belt pretensioner" which locks the belt in place.

But it was discovered that this part could heat up and set a foam insulating pad alight, running the risk of a fire in a high-speed head-on crash. Read more

I have noticed that the number of cars for sale on Autotrader has decreased in the last 4 months from around the 390,000 mark to around 320,000. Is this due to less people buying new ones and hanging on to their old cars, so less p/x's or private sales to me made? Or is this just typical for this time of year? Read more

Going past Chester zoo the other day I saw a sign that read (and I may get this slightly wrong);

Police
Aircraft regulation enforcement.

So what do they want me to do with that particular piece of information? Not taxi my Cessna down the dual carriageway maybe?

I don't know whether it applies in this instance, but I'm sure that I read in the papers recently that the makers/operators of UAV's were looking to initiate trials of their aircraft for traffic enforcement agencies.

Hi,

I've been having electrical problems with my KA 2004. On accelaration the headlights glow brighter and on decelaration the headlights dim.

I took it to my local mechanic who tested the alternator and recommended changing it as the regulator was broken and was charging the system at 19.2v.

I have now had alternator changed and the problem still persists.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

R.

I suppose that the regulator is integral with alternator. Is the new alternator charging at 19.2 volts ?
I suspect a duff battery.

I'm looking for a replacement for my 2004 Honda CRV petrol and like the new Mazda 6. Mazda like several other manufactures ( new Honda Accord, new Toyota Avensis ) appear to be generally limiting their higher spec models to diesel engines only presumably to satisfy Company car drivers. I understand that the new Mazda 2.2 diesel is a closed DPF system. What is a closed DPF system and will it be better for longativity? Read more

I believe it's just Mazda terminology for a self-managing system that doesn't use an additive.

In the FAQs up at the top of the page there are some technical bulletins from VW and Vauxhall which explain how latest generation DPF systems work (or at least, are SUPPOSED to work).

Most cars these days use a catalyst-coated DPF matrix which traps the exhaust soot and "cokes" it when the exhaust gas temperature is high enough (usually when the engine is fully warm and is running at 2,000ish rpm for a period of time). The ECU can trigger this process by injecting extra diesel, which ignites in the hot DPF.

Unlike earlier systems in Peugeots / Citroens, these systems do not require a special additive.

We've all done it at some point. Taken a wrong turn and then turned around in a private driveway or cul-de-sac and then spooted a sign stating 'Strictly no turning or parking'.

Is this enforceable by the owner of the land or residents of a mews?

Am I technically trespassing by driving onto the land and what could be the possible outcome taken by the owner?
If I've driven down a road in error, how am I supposed to remove my vehicle if I can't turn round. Lift it out by crane?

Are these signs a wastle of time and why do people get so het up by the odd car which happens to turn round in their driveway or road once in a blue moon?

just curious

From another point of view:-

Our property is on a corner with a largeish parking area on the front with two accesses. Unless we block the accesses off somehow we have had people driving through as it is easier for them to turn around by doing that.

We don't have any signs, it is obviously a private house, but one person who thought it was her right to park on the front got blocked in by our cars. She was quite upset when she couldn't get her car out and we wouldn't move our cars until we were good and ready some time later. I enjoyed that!

We often get people reversing into an access to turn around but that doesn't worry us as it does no harm.

Hi,

My 2001 Accord hatchback has started getting a lot of condensation on the rear window and in the cold weather I end up having to scrape ice off both sides of the rear window.

Any ideas on things I can check for?

Don't know if it's relevant but the AC doesn't seem to be working too well, could it be a factor?

Cheers,

Who mentioned recirculation? I said that aircon does not work below about 5C.

Hi

The engine misfires when cold, i.e. first thing in the morning and when driving away at night. The fault will clear within 20 seconds or so.

There are no fault codes, and according to live data the fuel delivery rate increases as it misses (basically I think the ECU is trying to compensate). When hot it's fine.

P.S. could this have anything to do with the rev holding/rising to 1500rpm problem?

Thanks. Read more

Hi

I don't come on this forum much now so didn't read reply, though to anyone reading this the problem was found to be linked to a dodgy fuel injection ECU which subsequently died a few days after I opened the read....

Hi

I have a Toyota Carina E 2.0 litre and the car is losing coolant at a rate of about 1/4 litre per 100 miles which is a lot.

Can anyone suggest why my car is losing so much coolant. The car has already been pressure checked but no leaks were found.

Thanks
Gregory

The car is still loosing coolant. But a general question: is it better to check the engine when it is cold or warm, or does it not matter?

Thanks

I sent Mitsubishi this question:

"The manual says use "DIA Queen ATF SP3".
I can't find any of this, is there a Dexron or other equivalent please?"

Their answer was:
"Unfortunately there is no equivalent, Only DIA Queen ATF SP3 can be used".

I expectd this answer, is it true? The dealer says they use "Texamatic 75/45", I can but 7.8 litres for £59.21(!) and I've to take my own can to fill.

Can't find anything relevant on the net except that the Texamatic's £18/litre.

Thanks in advance.
