Is it an immobiliser function whereby the pump has to be coded to the car? HDi's are like that as far as I know so I would guess it's common practice.

I am currently car less as I have sold my old one. I heatr about all these new schemes designed to encourage us to buy new cars. I have £1500 to spend. I am worried if I buy one now in 3 months time these new easy loans will send the price of older cars tumbeling if new ones are much cheaper to get hold off.

So I am not sure if I should just take the plunge when I see something I like or just wait. Read more

I agree with OldSock. Like Rattle I'm suffering from a little choice anxiety (father needs a new car soon) although I am similar in age to Focus Driver. The sums concerned are clearly a lot to Rattle and I once faced high insurance premiums. Give him credit, he's making a good effort to live within his means and he's making a go of his business.

Rattle, I'm not sure what the market is like up in Manchester but, have you considered a mkII Micra (reasonable parts prices) or even looking at a local paper from an area in the your region where the population is slightly older? You may find a half decent motor with a wad of invoices for servicing. I know there always the low mileage debate but, an older Hyundai may come well within your budget leaving cash for insurance or the odd water pump.

VECTRA 2.0 16V PETROL ECOTEC. does anyone know what purpose the air injection valve serves. the hose that goes to it comes from some sort of circular black box which is mounted behind the battery. Also the hose has went really soft and has almost collapsed. the car has a lack of power and accelleration. there is also a slight humming or droning noise. I had a similar prob with an escort and cleaning a blocked breather cured the noise and improved the performance. i have been around the car and fixed some vaccuum conections and checked the obvious breathers. any one have any more ideas. Thanks for all the help guys. I had just about gave up with it and was going to put it down to a poor engine in these cars. i now have read the probs that meltonlad has with the same car and they are both very similar. 18 - 23 mpg max in town. white smoke ( which i hadnt really paid much attention to before). power seems down about 20 - 30%.
Also most times when i turn on the ign before the car is started there is a sort of rumbling niose which will last about 10 - 20 sec and then goes away. going to check the inlet and ex gaskets and then do a compression test to try to get to the bottom of it. or any one else with any more ideas. thanks

I've been hunting round for good deals for a new Zetec 1.4 (met paint), and so far the best I've had from a dealer is:

£10096, inc 12 months RT, mats, fuel, automatic wipers+lights, Vision blue met. paint.

Does that sound like a good deal? Any feedback would be appreciated :)

I've seen a couple of places cheaper online, but I'd like to part ex my old 06 Fiesta Style Climate 1.25 (22k miles). £3700 part-ex value from that dealer. Read more

Hello

I need to travel over to Europe on Wednesday April 1st, leaving about 8AM and returning Sunday April 5th about 8PM.

I've used Eurotunnel several times before and found both price and service excellent, but just checked now and for the times I want to go the cheapest option is coming out at £125!

By comparison, similar times with SeaFrance are coming back at £67.

For that price difference I don't mind the extra time the ferry takes.

Has anyone had experience, good or bad, with SeaFrance? It'll be the first time I've taken my car with them.

Thanks, Chris. Read more

Ditto what DoctorChris said. I used to use Speedferries regularly and have just received
the e-mail with the LD ferry info.

Looks like they have a large boat, so probably won't be as fast as Speed One, but well worth a look.

I thought I might find Triumph but they must have updated the list of cars.

Hi
I've changed an alternator on a VW Golf 94 a while back, with a haynes manual, but my dear mother in law has asked to sort her alternator out, and there is no manual with the car, hence my question.

Does anyone have a relatively good idea or diagram that they might share with me on how to do this? Its also a Diesel, which I believe means the alternator is a bit lower down and harder to get at.

Thanks to anyone who can help

Following a recent bad luck spate of punctures (three in two weeks!), I've managed to end up with tyres having different load ratings at the back of my Volvo S80.

One is a Pirelli P6000 215/55 R 16 93W (the 'standard' load rating for this vehicle), whilst the other is a Dunlop SP Sport 01 215/55 R 16 97W - an 'extra load' variant, usually specified for MPV-type applications.

It doesn't bother me that the tyres are of different makes, but I'd like to know whether the different load ratings constitute a legal 'issue'. Read more

I doubt it, but....

If they are not of the same structure ( other than X ply/radial etc and not defined) then they should not be mixed and should be be on the same axle.

ASgain, and clutching straws they should be suitable having regard to the use to which the vehicle is being put or to the types of tyres fitted to its other whewels

DVD I don't think that we are talking about 'doctored' licences but ones fraudulently obtained as duplicates or by non-existent people ie genuine but illegal. Does Sharon in Essex not report to DVLA that she has written 3 points + SP30 on an individual's licence? I have 3 points on my licence - if I rang DVLA or my employer contacted them to ask about the state of my licence would have they have knowledge of the points applied in Essex?
