Can anyone tell me where this is located and how difficult it is to change? I have had problems with the fan resistor pack blowing and understand this could be because the pollen filter has got wet (in the past it does sometimes sound like it is sucking air in through water (bubbly)).

If anyone has any other ideas why this is happening I would be happy to hear from them.

Cheers

I can't comment on your fan resistor pack problem, but I have replaced the pollen filter on my 1999 1.8i during my last DIY service.

You'll probably be able to find advice on changing the pollen filter by searching this forum, but here's a cut and paste of a recent mesage I've posted on one of the Ford Focus forums...
_____

To remove the pollen filter, you have to remove a scuttle panel at the base of the windscreen (passenger side) and they're usually fitted so tightly that it's hard to remove it without breaking the clips hidden beneath. This means that when it's refitted, it often doesn't fit properly and any leaks caused by an ill-fitting scuttle panel will cause water to end up in the passenger footwell.

My advice if you break the clips (which are integral with the panel and can't be easily replaced on their own) is simply to buy a new panel - they're only £20 and (with the butyl strip, ordered separately) fit back perfectly if you're careful.
_____

I'm only doing this from memory, but if you only want to inspect the pollen filter, you may be able to open the bonnet and undo the clips along the front edge of the scuttle panel, then prise it up (carefully) so as not to disturb the seal with the windscreen. This will probably give you a gap just big enough to see the front edge of the pollen filter with the aid of a torch. If you break this seal and don't reseal it properly as described above, then you may end up causing more leaks !

To assess relative density of subject matter for the next photo-quiz.

1) I hold the steering wheel - do you?

2) Given that an evolutionary perspective would have us descended from apes and that on `Monkey` various positions are adopted - with something as simple as holding a banana - how do you hold the wheel?

3) Given that some people love cars and that the driving test makes you adopt the 10 to 2 `missionary (near miss) position` behind the wheel - what does the `car-ma soot-ra` teach that could be adopted in steering wheel holding position?
More to the point - what have you seen, while on the move? in traffic - hands and wheel related.

4) (related to question 1)
Ever seen anyone driving with their elbows and eating a jellied eel. (apart from Lud;)

I have been towed over a sutbble field in my gutted car behind a tow truck but I was kneeling on the floor with the mole wrench on the steering column.

I am having a terrible time with fixing my brakes.
We have replaced the Master cyl 3 times and each wheel cyl.
It still feels like there is air in the line. We have bleed the brakes so much I should invest in the brake fluid company.
We see nothing leaking.
If my husband puts a shim where the master cyl meets the peddle, they work but there is no play and we are concerned that that is putting pressure on the brakes all the time and may lock up. However they work great then. So this is telling me there is no problem with the line anywhere.
I can't believe we have had 3 bad new master cyl.
What could we be missing?
Has anyone had this trouble before?
Please help.
My husband is good at repairs so its nothing typical. Maybe something common with VWs

Thanks for everyones help. My husband finally got so mad at my bug we took it to a repair shop and hoped for the best. I tried to find one that knows old bugs and I lucked out.
Come to find out, my bug was missing the shims in the firewall and that was why there was to much play. Apparently they were never there and that was why my brakes never seemed quite right!

All the stuff my husband did was good and now my brakes are great!

I hope this info helps someone else someday so they don't go crazy like we did.

Thanks everyone!
